FARE-REGISTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,975, dated April 2'?, 1880.

To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN GnEsTERMAN, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Fare Registers and Glassiiiers, of which the following is a speciication.
The improvements relate to that class of registers known as dupleX, in which an alarm is registered on a continuons or general register, and also on a set-back or trip-register. It also has an indicator to show when or the number oi times the trip-register is started on a new count.
The invention consists in the combination of devices to prevent the actuation of the handle until a pawl is raised by a cam on the raising of the bell-hammer and prevent the return of the handle until another pawl is raised by another cam on the falling of the bell-hammer; also, in the combination of two ratchet-wheels on one arbor and a pawl carried by one ratchet-wheel, which pawl, by means of a pin or roller, turns the other ratchetwheel one tooth for each revolution in either direction of the rst ratchet-wheel; also, in the combination ot' two or more alarm mechanisms, a register to record the total number of alarms sounded, and two or Inore other or special registers to record the number of times each alarm has been sounded. and of other devices, as will be more particularly set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan with the case broken away and the dials removed. A represents the case of the register. It is composed of two parts, fitting the one into the other,

It is fastened to the front part of the case by screws e. e is an arm pivoted to the baseplate at e2, and carrying a spring-pawl, c3, to actuate the trip-register B. It is provided with a spring, e4, to return it to its normal position.
F is a post, on which the trip-register B is arbored. rlhis register is composed of two ratchetwheels, b for units, and b for tens. Ratchet-wheel b has rigidly attached two cams, b' b2, and is fastened to a hub, on the upper end of which the gured unit-dial b3 is fastened, and also the knob a3, outside the case. Gam b2 has a notch, which engages with one end of two-pronged lever F3 when the unit and when the Zero ot' the trip-register show at opening a". This cam also carries a reversible pawl, b4, the inner edge of which is fitted to engage (at the proper time) with the teeth of the tensratchet. The outer edge of this pawl is beveled in two directions, so that when in either direction itoomes in contact with pin or roller e5 it is pressed into a tooth ot' the tens ratchetwheel and turns it one tooth. Then the other bevel of said pawl reaches the pin or roller it, (the pawl,) under the iniiuence of its spring c7, is disengaged from the tens-ratchet.

movement of ratchet-wheel bis opposite one IOO end of locking-lever F5, (the other end of this locking-lever being engaged by the toothed wheel D8 on the tens ratchet-wheel.) Ratchet-wheel b has rigidly attached a cam, D7, a toothed wheel, b, and a gured tens-dial, b9, and has its aXis on the hub of the unitwheel. Cam t7 has a notch which engages with one end ot' two-pronged lever F3 when the unit and when the Zero ot' the trip-register show at opening al.
The locking-lever F5 engages with toothed wheel L8 to hold the tens-dial in position. At each tenth movement of the units-dial one end ot' said locking-lever passes into the notch of cam b on unit-ratchet, and its other end out of engagement with toothed wheel bg, allowin'git and the tens-dial to turn one tooth under the influence of reversible pawl b4. Vhen the tenth movement of units-dial is completed the locking-lever has passed out of the notch on cam b', and the tens-dial is iirmly locked until the neXt tenth movement ot' the units-dial, in the same manner as is set forth in my Patent No. 176,426, dated April 25, 1876.

Ratchet-wheel c is actuated by the pawl f3 oi' the two-pronged lever F3 each time the tripregister B is started by the actuating-handle on a new count alter being' set to zero by the setting device.
The spring-pawl f3 may be placed on the other side of pronged lever F, as shown in Fig. 6, in which case the ratchet-wheel c will be actuated by pawlf3 when the trip-register is set to Zero. e2 is a spring-detent to retain indicator G in position. rlhe face of this indicater is marked to show when and how many times it is moved.
H is a device for setting the trip-register B to Zero. It consists of a knob or key, a3, ratchet-wheel H, pawl h, and spring h.
D D are registers, actuated, respectively, by pawls did1 ot' prime movers` D3D4. The figures on the dials of these registers are seen through glazed openings d d2 in the back ot" the case, and are identical in construction and movement with those described in my Patent No. 176,426.

Each hammer has a tooth, j", by which it is raised, and a spring, fg, the retractive force of which causes it to strike the bell F1. A post, j', holds the hammer from resting ou the bell.

The operation is as follows: The trip-register being at zero, to register a full fare the handle D3 is pulled, when pawl di comes in contact with tooth/'f on bell-hammer F', and raises thc`hammer and presses the cam f5 on the tail o'l spriug-detentl/"l, raising its point away from ratchet di, and allows the handle D3 to be drawn out. The cam j moves out ol' con tact with tail oi" spring-detentf and allows its point to engage with ratchet-teeth d8. The spring-pawl d3 engages the iirst wheel oi" reg'- ister D, turning it one tooth. The projecting arm d comes in contact with pin a on arm e', pressing it down, and causes its pawl c to actuate ratchet-wheel I) of the trip-register, and the pronged lever F3 is turned on its pivot by the notched cam b2, causingl its pawlf to actuate the detecter-indicator C. rlhe pull en handle D3 being' continued, the pawl d? passes out of engagement with bell-hammer F', which, under the influence oli' its spring, strikes the bell F1. The cam f strikes the tail of detent f8, and raises its point from ratchet d8, and allows the handle D3 to return to position under the ini'luenee ot' spring D5. The cam f5 moves away from detentj'7 and allows it to engage with ratchet di.
At each tenth actuation of ratchet-wheel b the reversible pawl b4, eenling into contact with pin or roller c5, is pressed into a tooth ol the ratchet-wheel D and turns it, and the tensdial advances one number.
To register a half fare the handle DAl is pulled and the pawls register, and hammer on that side operates iu the same manner as described 'for the full-tare register, and in addition the tooth Z13 presses down the steel blade G, which causes a snapping sound, as described in my Patent No. 176,426, and denotes the registration of a half fare.

jecting arms dM e115 to actuate the trip-register, and that while the registers D D' register their respective alarms the register B registers the total alarms of both registers for each trip.
The trip being finished, it is desired to set the trip-register to zero without interfering with the general registers and alarms. This is accomplished by turning the knob or key a3 to the right. This carries the unit-dial b3 backward until the reversible pawl b4 comes in contact with pin or roller e5, when it is pressed into a tooth of ratchet-wheel Z1 and turns it, and the tens-dial recedes 011e number. This is continued until the unit shows at opening a', when the two-pronged lever F3 registers with notched cams b2 If', and is turned back until the zero shows at opening a' ,when the pawl f3 will be ready to engage with the ratchet of the detecter-indicator when either handle is actuated, as shown in Fig. l; or, if the pawl f3 is placed as shown in Fig. 6, the detecterindicator is actuated when the trip-register is turned back to zero, instead of when started on a new count.
Two series of ratchet-teeth and a reversible pawl to insure a' full reciprocation is not new. It is set forth in Patent No. 45,868, January l0, 1865.
Different kind of alarms to denote different class of fares is not new. It is set forth in my Patent No. 176,426, April 25, 1876.
I claim as of my inventionl. The combination of register D, actuating- 4 handle D3, ratchet d', spring-detent j", hammer F', spring/"9, and cam f5, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of register D, actuatinghandle D3, ratchet d8, spring-detent f8, hammer F', springfg, and cam f6, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of register D, actuatinghandle D3, ratchets C17 d, spring-detents ffg, hammer F', springj'9, and camsf5 7"'6, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination of a pin or roller with the ratchet-wheels of a register and their common arbor and a. reversible pawl carried by the rst ratchet-wheel to turn the second ratchet-wheel one tooth for each revolution in either direction of the iirst ratchet-wheel, substantiall'y as set forth.
5. The combination of actuating-paw] c3, arbor F, ratchet-wheel b, reversible carryingpawl b", pin or roller c5, ratchet-wheel 126, and setting device H, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination of two or more alarm mechanisms, a register to indicate the number of times either of said alarms has been sounded, and two or more special registers to lrecord how many times each alarm has been sounded, substantially as set forth.l
7. The combination of two or more alarms, the different sound or kind of which designates a different class or value, a register to indicate how many times either of said alarms has been sounded, and two or more special registers to record how many times each of the different alarms has been sounded, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination of arm c', pawl c3, register B, actuating-handles D3 D4, pawls d3 d' d5 d, bellhammers F' F2, and registers D D', substantially as set forth.
