Preferably the outer face of collar 2 is provided with a hexagonal or other non-circular extension 2b for engagement by a wrench whereby the collar may be rotated with respect to spindle I. In the spindle extension Id is an axially disposed tapped bore Ie adapted to receive the threaded shank 3b of a non-circular centering plug 8 having an axially disposed conical recess 3a in its outer end for the purpose hereinafter described. The non-circular body of plug 3 may be engaged by a wrench whereby the spindle may be held from rotation while the collar 2 is being rotated.

being understood however that all of the sections would be simultaneously retracted or projected equal amounts at the same time as hereinafter explained.

Ib, Ic of the spindle are adapted to slidably support six metallic blade holders 8, shown more particularly in Figs. 2, 3, 6, 7 and 8, said holders being substantially channel-shaped and extending the length of spindle I embracing said extensions Ia and Ic; and said holders are mounted around the spindle and are of such Widththat the sides thereof will abut when the holders 8 are fully retracted as shown in Figs. 7 and 8. Each holder 8 is provided with outwardly extending flanges 8a which also abut when the hone holders 8 are in fully retracted position. Each of the holders 8 carries a Carborundum or other hone 9 which is preferably cast into the holder, said hone 9 extending outwardly beyond the flanges 8a and having an arcuate outer periphery whereby the peripheries of all the six hones 9 when their holders 8 are in retracted position will together form a cylindrical hone in which the sides of the hones 9 in adjacent holders contact squarely as indicated in Figs. 7 and 8.

In order to prevent outward bulging of the "relatively long holders 8V during operation or during axial adjustment of thespindle, interengaging Vflat springs are provided on the undersides of the holders and on the spindle I, as illustrated in Figs. l, 1d and '7. As shown, fiat springs- 8g are secured to the undersidesA of the holder 8 intermediaterthe tapered portions 8b, 8c and the tapered portions 8c, 8d, said springs being adapted to underlie cooperating flat springs guides 8e respectively engaging the slots Ih the tapered enlargements Ia, Ib and Ic. In so placing the-holders the flat springs 8g of the respective holders would be positioned beneath the flat springs -Ik of the spindle I to initially hold the holders in place on the spindle while the collar 2 is; moved on the spindle sufficiently to engage theltapered ends 8f of the outermost guide 8e in the conical recesses 2a and la of the collars 2 and l, the tightening of the collar 2 on spindle I being effected either manually or by using a pair of wrenches engaging the hexagonal portion v2b of collar 2 and the centering plug 3 respectively. 14. `In a hone as set forth in claim 11, said preventing means comprising flat springs on the holders and circular springs around the spindle confined between a series of pairs of spaced members on the spindle disposed intermediate the ends thereof, the flat springs entering between the pairs and underlying the circular springs.
A15. In a hone as set forth in claimll, the side faces of said holders and hones yabutting when the holders are fully contracted around the spindle.

17. In a hone as set forth in claim 11. an annular scale on the periphery of the first mentioned collar cooperating with a pointer fixedly mounted on the end of one hone segment, whereby the diameter to which the hone is adjusted will be visually indicated.
