' 8 Claims. (01. 271-59) require the producing and recording on forms only such information as is advisable or necessary on the particular form, and to vary the information on additional and/or like forms such as the particular system may require.
An example of such a system may be found in numerous order systems such as are employed in factories, and wherein an original order sheet is made out containing a multiplicity of items comprising a complete order. Selected items are taken from the main order and reproduced or posted on an'individual order in connection with a proper heading corresponding to the complete original and embodying the subject matter, and
then these separate orders are distributed to the various departments throughout the factory. An
example of devices for arranging the subject matter for such a system is disclosed in U. S. Letters Patent No. 2,218,304, issued to Frederick W. Storck on October 15, 1940.
To duplicate the selected information of the original order in proper position on the form, 5
the clear form sheet must be guided and fed to the duplicating elements in a manner whereby both the desired item or items or form will register when engaged with one another.
Accordingly, one of the primary objects of the present invention is to provide a sheet guide that may be readily and positively positioned so that a sheet edge placed against the guide may be fed to the master duplicating or printing elements in a manner whereby the form on the sheet will register with the selected matter on the original.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sheet guide that may be moved in a determinate step-by-step manner so that sheets positioned against the guide in a sequential manner will register with consecutive spaced items on the original.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sheet guide that may be moved by increments and positively positioned in a predeterminately spaced manner.
A still further object of the present invention is to devise a mechanism that is simple and efficient in character and which may be readily actuated to a number of different indicated positions for the purpose of functioning as a guide in the positioning of a sheet so that, when the sheet is advanced, it will register for engagement with other elements.
The foregoing objects are merely stated as illustrative of the invention and are not to be construed as a limitation thereof, as other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following detailed description of the invention and more particularly set forth in the claims appended hereto and forming a part hereof.
While not limited thereto, in the present instance the invention is shown in association with a so-called w'et process duplicating machine that is particularly adaptable to the previously referred to system.

The duplicating machine in relation thereto is a gear 12 that meshes with and rotates an intermediate gear l3. The machine is provided with a pair of rollers M, l5 that are also rotatably supported in the side frames It and in this instance the upper roller It is provided with a gear I that meshes with the intermediate gear l3 and by means of which the roller I4 is positively rotated. The roller I5 is rotated by means of its frictional contact with the driven roller l4.
Disposed in front of the rollers |4, I5 is a moistening unit I! that engages with the roller l4 and applies moisture to the face of this roller as the roller is rotated.
A machine of the above general character is fully shown and described in U. S. Reissue Letters Patent No. 19,951, issued to Frederick W. Storck on April 28, 1936 therefore,'further detailed description is thought to beunnecessary in the present instance.
Master printing elements The primary master I8, Fig. 3, is secured to the rotatable printing drum in any suitable manner. This master I8 is formed with numerical items |8a that are preferably arranged in a spaced relation substantially equal to the distance of the double spacing of lines as is eflfected by the usual typewriting machine. A secondarymaster I9 is superimposed relative to the primary master l8 andattached to the drum so as to be movable longitudinally of the drum H and to a position adjacent the selected numerical item l 8a. This secondary master l9 carries information that is tobe duplicated, in combination with the selected data I'Ba on the primary master, upon a clear form or sheet 26..
Sheet support and guide Suitably supported by the side frames IB is a sheet support 2| that is used ordinarily to support a stack of clear sheets that are to' be fed singly to the printing elements which may be of the usual character embodied in machines adapted to make a number of duplicate copies of master subject matter. Usually, the sheet support is provided with means against which the edge of the stack may be positioned for proper alignment to be advanced into-registering engagement with other elements. Such a means may embody up-turned flanges 2|a, 2|b of the sheet support'2l, together with an adjustable member 22 that is slidably supported on the sheet support.
In the present instance, the adjustable member 22 is substantially L-shaped in cross section with its base 22a resting on the upper surface of the sheet support. This base 22a is provided with a guide portion 23 that engages in a transverse slot 2lc, formed in thesheet support 2|, and functions to maintain the flange 22b in a parallel relation to the sheet support flange 2Ia.
Sheet guide actuating mechanism The guide portion 23 is provided with a depending pin 24. that engages with a rotatable threaded member 25 disposed below the sheet receiving surface of the sheet support 2|, and this member 25 is supported in suitable bearings 25 1, 25c afiixed to the sheet support 2|. For the present purpose, the thread 25a, of the member 25, is formed with a required lead so that a one-. half revolution of the member 25 will move the pin 24 a distance equal to two usual typewritten line spaces. Of course, the thread 25a may be designed so as to give a desired lead and adapted to specific requirements.
Associated with the threaded member 25 is a clutch, generally indicated at 26, that includes a housing 21 secured to the reduced diameter portion 251: of the member 25. A head member 23 is disposed in the housing 21 and-is adapted to rotate freely on its portion 25b of the threaded member 25. This head is provided with notches 28a in its peripheral face in which balls or rollers 29 are disposed and these members 29 are urged into a driving position between the head notches 28a and housing 21 by means of compression springs 30. The head 26 is provided with a hub 26b to which a pulley 3| is secured. The assembly of the head 28 and pulley 3| is retained in relation to the housing 21 by means of a washer 32 fixed to the end of the shatt 2517 by means of a screw 33. v
This clutch arrangement is such that when the pulley 3| and head member 26 are rotated in a clockwise direction, Fig. 6, the clutching members 29 serve to rotate the housing and member 25 in the same direction. when the pulley 3| and head member 28 rotate in a contra-clockwise direction, the clutching members are ineffective and, therefore, the housing 21 and member 25 remain stationary.
A chain 34 or other form of linkage is disposed partially about the face of the pulley 3| and in a positive manner engages with a pin 35 secured in the pulley so that movement of thechain 34 in either direction will cause rotation of the pulley 3|. One end of the chain 34 is secured to an upwardly extending portion 36a of a foot treadle 36 pivotally supported by suitable brackets 31 disposed in the machine supporting cabinet 38. The other end of the chain 34 is attached to one end of a pull spring 39 that is suitably attached to a stationary part 40 within the cabinet 38. A stop 4| is provided so as to limit movement of the treadle in one direction while the treadle is urged in the direction 0! the stop 4| by means of a compression spring 42.
Positioning stop Adjustabiy secured to the end portion 250 of the threaded member 25 is a disc 43 having a pair of studs 44, 45 secured in the outer end face thereof. The studs support a pair of rollers 45, 41 which, in this instance, are in the form of anti-friction bearings. These rollers 46, 41 engage with an enlarged head 48a of a plunger 48 slidably mounted in a suitable bracket 49 secured to the sheet support 2|. A spring 56 encircles the plunger 48 in a suitable manner that tunetions to urge the plunger head 48a into yielding engagement with the rollers 46, 41 and thus this assembly functions as a yieldable stop for arresting the rotative movement of the threaded mem- Operation In a preferred arrangement, the machine is provided with-a foot treadle 52 and linkage 53 to the power connecting means of the machine so that the operator may depress the treadle 52 to cause a complete effective duplicating cycle of the machine.
It will be assumed that the primary master 3V is already secured to the drum II and the secondary master i9 correctly positioned relative to treadle 52, the machine begins its operative cycle and the form sheet 20 is advanced and engaged between the printing drum II and roller Ha to be engaged in registration with the master copies as the drum is rotated.
After the machine has completed its. cycle of operation, the secondary master l9'is then positioned adjacent the next succeeding item, in this instance item 7. The operator then depresses the sheet guide positioning treadle 36, in the direction indicatedbfthe arrow, Fig. 2,thus rotating the pulley 3| in a clockwise direction, the clutch locking elements 29 causing the housing 2'! and threaded member to be. rotated-therewith. As aforesaid, the elements are arranged, in
the present instance, to rotate the member 25 for 25 a one-half revolution. Rotation of the thread 25a, formed on'the member 25, causes the pin a I 24 to move the sheet guide 22, to the left and positions the guide on the next succeeding mark ('7) to correspond to the item (7) that is to be 30 next duplicated. The operator then repeats the sequence of operation by first placing the clear formsheet against the guide 22 and advancing the positioned sheet 22 to the feed rollers l4, l5.
Having thusdescribed my invention, what I 3 claim is:
1. A device of the character'specified having a sheet support, a sheet guide on said support with means adapted to actuate said guide, said means embodying a. rotatable member associated with M said guide. together with means for intermittently rotating said member in a manner whereby said guideis moved in a step-by-step sequence.

A device of the character specified having a sheet support, a sheet guide on said support with means adapted to actuate said guide, said means embodying a. rotatable member associated with said guide with means for rotating said member, yielding means associated with said rotatable member is urged to a determinate stop position.

A device of the character specified having a sheet support with an opening therein, a sheet guide on said support and having a portion -thereof extending into said opening, a rotatable .threaded member disposed below the sheet receiving surface of saidsupport and in engagement with said portion of the guide, together with means for rotating sa'd member in a manner whereby said guide is actuated in a step by-step sequence.
8. A device of the character specified having a sheet support with an opening therein, a sheet guide on said support and having a portion thereof extending into said opening, a rotatable threaded member disposed below the sheet receiving surface of said support and in engagement with said portion of the guide, a determinate yieldable stop for said rotatable member with means for rotating said member between determinate stop positions.
