The present invention relates to banks and particularly to toy banks wherein a metal base plate is associated with a body portion made of plastic material. The invention however may be applied to numerous devices wherein a metal plate is attached to a plastic housing.

The object of the present invention is to provide means whereby the metal base plate of the bank removably is associated with a thin plastic coin bank housing in such fashion as to provide adequate support for the base plate and to strengthen the housing and prevent its warping or cracking. The metal base plate is provided with a coin lslot and a spring guard therefor. A lock on one end and a lug on the opposite end of the base plate cooperate with metal flanges associated with the housing to permit ready removal of the base plate.

Other objects and advantages of the pres-ent invention will appear more fully as the description proceeds, reference being had to the acc'ompanying drawing wherein a preferred embodiment of the invention is shown. It is to be understood however that the drawing and description are illustrative only and that the in- Vention is to be limited only insofar as it is limited by the claims.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the metal stamping which is associated with the housing and which removably receives the metal base plate.

Referring now to the drawing, the toy bank embodying the present invention includes a housing l. The housing IO, which for purposes of this illustration simulates a small house, is made of any suitable plastic material and in this case has a rectangular base. The lower po-rtions of the hou-sing are offset and spaced from the main sides by Shoulders 12, thereby providing a rectangular base slightly larger than the rectangular section of the housing proper.

An intermediate metal portion |5 (best shown in Fig. 4) is provided between the base of the housing and a metal base plate. This intermediate portion 15 isa rectangular metal stamping which includes Vertical peripheral flanges IG adapted to bear within and against the enlarged base portions ll of the housing. Projecting inwardly from and at the top of the flanges IE are Shoulders l'l on which rest the inner surfaces of the Shoulders |2 of the housing. The free ends of Shoulders I'l are turned downwardly and inwardly as shown by flanges 18, the lower part of which terminate in a horizontal plane some- What above the lower 'end of flanges IG. This intermediate portion |5 is secui'ed to the base portion H of the housing and against the offset Shoulders |2. In order to strengthen the side wall ll and provide adequate connection of the stamping 15 to the plastic housng, I use two strips 20 running longitudinally of the housing and connect them by rivets 19 to the flanges IG.

A metal base plate 25 is adapted loosely to fit within the depending flanges. |6 and to bear against the lower inturned flanges |8 of the intermediate metal portion |5, thereby closing the open bottom of the plastic housing Ill. A coin slot 26 and a spring slot guard mechanism 21 are provided on the base plate.

A lug 28 integral with the base plate and 'spaced from one end thereof is stamped from the base plate. The lug 28 is inclined to the plate and is adapted to clamp a lower inturned'flange [8 of the intermediate portion |5 between it and the base plate, thereby holding the base plate in position.

A lock mechanism 30 is mounted on the inner face of the base plate near the end thereof op'p'osite the lug 28. Retractable lugs 3|, actuated by the lock mechanism, extend toward the end of the plate. In their extended position, the lugs 3| overlie a lower inturned flange l8 and hold the base plate securely against the bottom surfaces of the flanges IB. When retracted, the lugs 3| clear the flange |8 and the base plate readily may be removed.

From the above description, it is apparent that I have provided a simple and effective means for removably mounting a metal base plate to a housing of plastic material.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A toy bank comprising a housing of plastic material, the bottom of said housing being open, a metal stamping having flanges which abut the inner sides of the housing and are secured thereto adjacent the bottom thereof, said stamping also having flanges extending inwardly and downwardly from said first named flanges, the free ends of said latter flanges terminating in horizontal extensions, a base plate enclosing said bottom opening and having means for removable engagement with said horizontal extensions, said means including extension overlying lugs spaoed from opposite ends of said base plate, one set of lugs being retractable to permit removal of said base plate.

2. A toy bank comprising a housing of plastic material having an open bottom, the sides of said housing having the lower porti'ons thereof offset outwardly by means of Shoulders, a metal stamping including fianges which abut the oifset portions interiorly thereof and are secured thereto by means of rivets, webs which abut the Shoulders of said housing, and fianges extending inwardly and -downwardly from said webs, the free ends of said latter fianges terminating in substantially horizontal extensions, a base plate enclosing said bottom opening and having a lug stamped from one end thereof and adapted to aze'ness overlie a horizontal extension, retractable extension overlying lugs at the opposite end of said base plate, and a lock mechanism adapted to actuate said latter lugs to remove said base plate.

3. A toy bank comprising a housing of plastic material having an open bottom, a metal stamping secured to the inner sides of said housing adjacent the open end thereof, said stamping having inwardly and downwardly extending fianges termnating in substantially a horizontal plane, a metal base plate enclosing said bottom opening and engaging said flanges, lugs on opposite ends of said base plate overlying said flanges to hold said base plate in position, the lugs at one end of said plate being retraotable to permit removal of said base plate.
