1 Claim.
My invention relates to valves and more particularly to valves of the self-grinding type.
One of the principal objects of my invention is to provide a novel and improved means for association with a valve to effect a grinding of the valve seat by the grind member.
Another object of my invention is to provide an improved means or device of the above described character which is simple in construction, durable in use, efficient in operation and economical in manufacture.
A special object of my invention is to provide a device so constructed and arranged whereby the same may be attached to valves already in use without modifying the same.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, appended claim and annexed drawing.
Referring to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a valve and illustrating my invention as applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the valve and illustrating my invention as attached thereto in operative position.
In practicing my invention, as illustrated in the drawing, I provide a valve casing 9 of ordinary construction and which is provided with a web I8 formed with a valve seat II. The casing 9 is provided with an upper section I2 having a chamber I3 superjacent the valve seat II and which is normally closed by a bonnet I4 having its lower end I5 threaded therein as illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing.
The bonnet I4 is provided with a centrally disposed and axially extending bore I6, the lower end of which is threaded as at H for threaded engagement with threads I8 formed on the lower end section of a valve stem I9 rotatably mounted within the bore. The upper end of the bonnet I4 is externally threaded and receives thereon a cap 20 sleeved over the stem I9 to maintain a packing gland 2| disposed about the stem in sealed relation with the latter to preclude leakage of fluid from within the valve casing.
The lower end of the valve stem I9 is provided with an inverted frustum-shaped valve member 22 for seating engagement with the valve seat II. The upper end of the valve stem I9 is provided with a hand wheel 23 for operating the valve stem I9 to raise and lower the valve member 22 with respect to the valve seat II to open and close the passage therein between the aligned inlet and outlet openings 24 of the casing 9.
The lower bottom wall of the casing 9 is formed with a subjacent eyed car 25 through which is disposed one end of an S hook 26. The opposite end of the hook 26 is detachably connected to an eyed ear 2'I exteriorly formed on a valve grinding attachment or means 28.
The valve grinding attachment comprises a hollow member or sleeve having upper and lower sections 29 and 39 respectively with the upper section of a greater diameter than the lower section. The lower section is exteriorly threaded as at 3| for threaded attachment within the upper section I3 of the valve casing while the upper section is interiorly threaded for threadedly receiving therein the lower end section of the bonnet I I as clearly illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawing.
In use (the threaded portion of the valve stem I 9 being disposed within and in threaded engagement with the threads I! of the bonnet I4), the bonnet I4 is detached from the section I3 of the casing 9 and the lower section 38 of the sleeve 28 threaded into the section I3 whereupon the lower end section of the bonnet is threaded into the upper section 29 of said sleeve. When the parts are thus assembled the valve stem [9 is rotated to dispose the threads I8 out of engagement with the threads I! and subjacent the lower end of the bonnet.
Obviously, when the parts are thus arranged (with the valve member 22 having seating engagement with the valve seat II) downward pressure is applied to the valve stem I9 and the latter rotated or oscillated to effect a grinding of the valve seat II by the valve member 22. When the valve seat II has been sufficiently ground the sleeve 28 is detached from the section I3 and bonnet l4 and connected to the hook 26 for further use, while the valve stem I9 is threaded upwardly into the bonnet and the latter threadedly connected to the section [3 to permit functioning of the valve in the ordinary manner.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that I have provided a hollow member or sleeve which is adapted to be inserted between the casing and bonnet of a valve for spacing the bonnet a suflicient distance away from the valve seat to permit the valve stem to be disposed downwardly out of threaded engagement with the bonnet and with the valve member engaging the valve seat whereby to permit grinding of the valve seat by the valve member when the valve stem is oscillated or rotated. If desired, the upper section of the sleeve 28 may be polygonally faced to receive the jaws of a wrench-or the like to effect at tachment or detachment of the sleeve to and from the upper section l3 and the bonnet.
Without further elaboration, the foregoing will so fully explain the invention that others may, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt the same for use under various conditions of service. Moreover, it is not indispensable that all the features of the invention be used conjointly since they may be employed advantageously in various combinations and sub-combinations.
It is obvious that the invention is not confined to the herein described use therefor as it may be utilized for any purpose to which it is adaptable. It is therefore to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction as illustrated and described, as the same is only illustrative of the principles of operation,
which are capable of extended applicationin' various forms, and that the invention comprehends all construction within the scope of the appended claim.
. What I claim is:
In a valve, the combination with a valve body having a seat therein and an interiorly threaded bonnet engaging neck section, a bonnet having an exteriorly threaded inner portion engageable with the body neck and provided with an interiorly threaded bore, a valve stem extended through the bore of the bonnet having a threaded section at its inner end normally engageable with the threads of the bonnet for axially moving the stem upon rotation thereof, and a valve on the inner end of the stem engageable with the said valve seat, of a tubular member exteriorly threaded at one end for detachable engagement with the neck section of the body and interiorly threaded at its opposite end for engagement with the threaded portion of the bonnet, the said tubular member being adapted to firmly unite the bonnet and body in spaced apart relation so that the threaded portion of the stem will be dis- N.
