UNITED STATES PATENT OFFI E.
THOMAS L. GLAOHER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PAM PHLET-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,717, dated April 20, 1880.
Application filed February 14, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS L. GLACHER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Pamphlet Box, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved box for containing pamphlets, magazines, manuscripts, and the like articles.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved pamphletbox. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The box A, which may be made of any desired material, is preferably made in the shape of a book, and can be varied in size and thickness. One side, B, of the box is made to resemble the back of the book, and is pivoted or hinged to the box, and is acted upon by some suitable spring, 0, which keeps it closed.
The box A is provided with an additional bottom, D, having a tongue, E E, on each side, which tongues fit into corresponding grooves in the sides of the box, thereby adapting the bottom to slide, so that it can be drawn in and out of the box. The inner end of the false bottom D is provided with a short back piece, F. An index stating the contents of each box is preferably attached to the inside of each hinged back.
The real bottom of the box can be made to slide instead of the false bottom, if desired.
The spring can be omitted when desired, and the hinged back may be locked by some suitable locking device.
The operation is as follows: The boxes are placed upon shelves with the backs to the outside, as books are generally placed upon bookshelves. If a certain pamphlet, magazine, manuscript, or like article is desired, the hinged back B of the box A containing the same is opened and the sliding bottom D is drawn out and holds the back B open. As the sliding bottom is provided with back piece, F, the pamphlets cannot slip off, out are drawn out with the said bottom. Both hands are free now, and the desired article can be easily taken from the box. Whenthe sliding bottom is returned to its place the hinged back is closed by the spring 0.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcnt The book-shaped file A B, for keeping pamphlets on alibrary-shelf, provided with a bottom slide, D, having the back F, as shown and described, whereby it willsupport and draw out the pamphlets while it holds the door open, as specified.
THOS. L. OLAOHER.
