This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a lock handle for paper bags.

The invention proposes in combination with a paper bag having front and rear walls with aligned elongated openings near the top portion for accommodating ones fingers for carrying the bag, of a novel arrangement and construction of lock handle associated with said openings.

More specifically, the invention contemplates characterizing the lock handle by a strip portion continuing from the top edge of the front wall and extending down the outerface of; said rear wall and having an opening aligned with said openings, and said strip portion being. provided with a tongue portion associated with the material of the front, wall in a particular way.

Still further the invention contemplates characterizing the tongue portion by extending it through said openings and up the outer face of the front wall and through a slit formed in the front wall above the openings.

Still further the invention proposes the provision of reinforcement sheets mounted upon the walls of the paper bag around the openings thereof for strengthening the material in this vicinity. Another object of the invention resides in a modification wherein an extension element is provided secured to the tongue portion and extending through a slot in the top edge of the strip portion and having lug portions bent forwards and rearwards and down the outer faces of the strip portion and front wall portion for securely locking the handle in operative position.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 1 is a front elevational View of a paper bag with a lock handle constructed in accordance with this invention and illustrated in an open position.

Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

The lock handle, in accordance with this invention, is used in combination with a paper bag Iii having a front Wall W and a rear wall W and provided with an open top, IN. The. front and rear walls have aligned elongated openings ll near their upper ends for accommodating ones finger for carrying the bag. The front Wall Ill is. provided with a. slit. This strip portion is also provided with an opening ll aligned with the openings l l in the closed position of the lock handle. The opening ll has projecting from one of its edges a tongue portion M, which in the closed position of the lock handle is extended through the openings l l and up the outer face of the front wall Ill and into the slit l2, as illustrated in Fig. 4.

A reinforcement sheet I5 is secured to the inner face of the rear wall lo around the opening II. A reinforcement sheet [6 is secured to the inner face of the front wall Ill around the opening H and the slit I2 and the Opening Il This reinforcement sheet l6 has an area backing the tongue portion M and reinforcing the same.

Figs. 1 and 2 illustrate the paper bag in its open condition. Articles may be placed in the bag. When it is desired to close the bag the strip portion l0 is folded down along the top edge of the rear wall I0 The tongue I4 is then bent through the openings II and bent upwards and inserted into the slit l2. The article is now in the condition illustrated in Fig. 4 which represents the closed position of the bag and the operative position of the lock handle.

In Figs. 5 and 6 a modified form of the invention has been disclosed which distinguishes from the prior form in the fact that an extension element I8 is secured to the tongue portion l4 and in the closed position of the lock handle extends up through a slot [9 formed in the top edge of the strip portion It. This extension element I8 is provided with lug portions it and W at its extended end. These lug portions are respectively bent forwards and rearwards and down the outer faces of the strip portion of the front wall. This looks the handle in position.

Fig. 5 illustrates the open condition of the paper bag. Fig. 6 illustrates the closed position of the paper bag with the lock handle functioning.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is: a

1. In combination with a paper bag having front and rear walls with alignedelongated openings near the top portion for accommodating ones fingers for carrying the bag and having a slit in said front Wall have said openings and an open top, and a strip portion continuing from the top edge of said front wall and extending down the outer face of said rear wall and having an opening aligned with said openings and having a tongue portion extending through said openings and up the outer face of said front wall and through said slit, and an extension element secured to said tongue portion and extending through a slot in the top edge of said strip portion and having lug portions bent forwards and rearwards and'down the outer faces of said strip portion and front wall.

In combination with a paper bag having front and rear walls with aligned elongated openings near the top portion for accommodating ones finger for carrying the bag and an open top, said front wall being formed with a slit above said openings, a strip portion continuing from the top edge of said front wall and extending downwards along the outer face of said rear wall and having a tongue portion extending through said openings and upwards along the outer face of said front wall and through said slit to a position between the adjacent inner faces of said walls, said bag being formed with a slot at the junction of said front wall and strip portion and superimposed above said slit, and a metallic extension element having one end secured to said tongue portion and its free end projected upwards through said slot to be bent over to secure said tongue element in position.

In combination with a paper bag having front and rear walls with aligned elongated openings near the top portion for accommodating ones fingers for carrying the bag and an open top, said front wall being formed with a slit above said openings, a strip portion continuing from the top edge of said front wall and extending downwards along the outer face of said rear wall and having a tongue portion extending through said openings and upwards along the outer face of said front wall and through said slit to a position between the adjacent inner faces of said walls, said bag being formed with a slot at the junction of said front wall and strip portion and superimposed above said slit, and a metallic extension element having one end secured to said tongue portion and its free end projected upwards through said slot to be bent over to secure said tongue element in position, said extension element having its free end formed with aninwardly extending cut dividing said free end into separate lugs bent forwards and rearwards and projected downwards along the outside faces of said strip and front wall FRED TATAR.
