Description

B. J. WEST; Cultivator.
No. 226,691. Pateried April 20,1880.
WITNESSES 'r'VaH-rnq 440M044 Y" P fiTT lH- T- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN J. WEST, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
CULTIVATO R.
PEOIFIGATION forming" part of Letters Patent No. 226,691, dated April 20, 1880.
' Application filed July 30, 1879 To all whom it may c'oncernr Be it known that I, BENJAMIN J. WEST, a resident of the city of New Orleans, parish of Orleans, and State of Louisiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin Gultivators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of cultivator-s in which disks are employed for throwing dirt to or from the roots of young plants.
The nature of my improvements will be readily understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, whereon- Figure 1 represents a perspective view thereof. Fig. 2 shows the manner in which the disks are connected with theirrespective standards. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a shoe which is fitted to the lower ends of the standards for the purpose of supporting the diskspindles thereupon, as well as for preventing dust from working into the bearings thereof.
A is an ordinary beam, the rear of which is provided with handles 1) b and with an axle, 0. To the latter is secured, by means of stirrups d d, 850., a pair of right-angled standards, E E, the lower ends of which are turned, and have titted thereupon the enlarged ends of a pair of horizontal spindles, F F, upon which revolve the disks G G and their hubs h h.
On the outer end of each spindle is loosely fitted a cap or washer, I, that is held in position by means of a pin, 70. These caps have lugs projecting from one side thereof, for the purpose of securing thereto the rear end of braces L, the forward ends of which are ad- 0 j ustabl y secured, by means of eyebolts or otherwise, in any of a series of holes that are made in a cross-beam, M, which is secured at a certain distance in front of the axle to the main beam A, as shown.
N N are metal braces, by means of which the cross-beam M is more rigidly secured to the main beam.
The vertical portions of the standards E E are provided with wrought-iron straps R, the
bolted ends of which are connected, by means of braces S T, with the cross-beam M and with the outer ends of the horizontal portions of the standards by means of eyebolts, as shown at t.
Set-screws-a are tapped through the metal surrounding the eyes in the spindles F, so as to permit of an adjustment of the disks at any angle. The said disks are securely held, when adjusted, by means of the braces L, as before mentioned.
On the drawings the horizontal portions of the standards E E are represented as extending outward. These, however, may be reversed, so as to bring the disks much closer together, whenever the work to be accomplished may require the same to be done.
To the under side of the cross-beam M are rigidly secured two vertical draft-bars, V V, each having a number of holes drilled'through the same, to permit of the whiffletrees W bein g adj ustably connected therewith. From the lower holes in thescbars connecting-rods to extend and are fastened to the lugs a of the shoes 2, the latter titted to the turned portion of the standards E E, and held thereon beneath the horizontal spindles by'mea-ns of a pin, 00.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a rotary cultivator, the right-angled standards E E, the lower ends of which are turned and fitted with horizontal spindles F F, of the construction described, carrying re,- volving disks, substantially as described.
2. In a rotary cultivator, the combination, with the angled standards E E, horizontal spindles F F, and the revolving disks G G, of the caps or removable washers I, with braces L attached thereto, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
B. J. WEST.
In-presence of- J. O. HULBELL, P. J. FINNEY.
