Description
tnitd Startet @wat @Mitica AND ARTHUR T.
`JOHN ROBINSON, OF PLAINFIELD, ASSIGNOR TO AARON SNEL'L D. AUSTIN, OF WILL COUNTY, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 91,566, dated J'zme 22, '1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SULKY-CULTIVATORS.
Be it known that I, J oHN ItoBnssoN, of Plainfield, Will county, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement on-a Sulky-Oultivator; and I do hereby declare the following to be full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference-being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this speciiication, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view,
Figure 2, a side elevation,
Figure 3, a rear elevation, and
Figure 4, a perspective view of the mode of attachment oftheshovel-post to the beam.
My invention consists in an improvement on a sulkycultivator, by means of which it is made easy to guide the shovels, and raise or lowerthe re'ar ends of' the plow-beams to any desired point by the operator as he rides.
Also I claim to'have improved the mode of attaching the' shovel-posts to the beams, to throw the dirt to either sidefby the device shown in iig. 4.
In order to enable others to understand my invention, I will proceed to explain the same.
a. a are theI plow-beams, attached by means of a swivel-joint to thepost c, from the main frame b, the rear ends passing through and being heldin place by the slotted upright posts 't' fi.
These two slotted upright posts, 'i (t, are attached together by means of the braces o and ji, and slotted cross-bar m., and may be placed at any distance apart by means of the slot in the cross-bar fm, fig. l, and the row of holes in the brace p, tig. 3.
The upright posts i t' pass up through` between the rear end ofthe main frame b and the cross-bar lr, and move horizontally by means of being suspended on the rollers n n, which roll from one side to the other on said frame, as shown. Y
The horizontal motion is imparted to the beams by being under the beams a, will raise them up with butv very little exertion, and it becomes a very easy matter to guide the shovels to either side desired.
Fig. 4 shows the means by which the two front l shovel-posts are attached to the beams a.
's is a metal seat attached by bolt to the beam a,
into which rests the post c.
The set-screw u, passing 'through the seat into the post c, holds it in place.
By loosing the so as to throw the shovel either to one side or `the other, which is permitted by the swivel in the brace t.
The whole machine may be constructed of any snitable material, such as is ordinarily used in cultivators of this class, the whole being mounted on the wheels x, inthe ordinary way.
p V.lhe seat e may be moved either 'forward or bachward, to accommodate the machine to the weight of the operator, so as to balance the machine and take the weight of the frontend of the machaine off' the horses neck.' Y
Having thus described my invention,
What I claimas new, and desire'to .secure by Letters Patent, is- Y 1. The combination ot' the slotted metal seat s, post o, and swivel-brace t, with the shovel-beam a, arranged, operating, and constructed as and for the purposes set fort-l1.
2. The general combination of allthe parts described and shown, as and for the purposes set forth.V v
Witnesses: JOHN ROBINSON.
