Patented Dec. 16, 1941 Ill., assigncrs to. Sager ll/lletal Weatherstrip Company, Chicago, jlll., a 'fcorporation of Illinois Application January 21, 1939; swarm. 25am:
screams. (oust-c9) This invention relates in general to: weatherstripping, and; 'more particularly to metal Weatherstripping which is adapted to. function as; a parting head or strip. for window: sash mounted ina window casing or frame.
A: principal 'object of' the invention isthe' asto providean interlocking slideand effective weather seal; in cooperative relation with. slidin members provided onwooden windowv sash, and having. hearing-portions. for; the end: sliding surfaces: of the window sash which. make line 0011'. tact therewith, ratherthan surface contact; forthe' Purpose of reducing;- friction therebetween. A: further important; object of the invention is thaprovision of such: a. combined metal parting bead and Weatherstrip-which;isradapted'to be so securedo. the. windowv frame that the parting bead portion thereof. isresiliently displaceable to a; certain; extentvrelative to, the window frame,
and sash.
Numerous.- other objects and advantages; of. the invention; will. be apnarentas it is better under stood. from. the following description, which, when taken in connection with the accompany-- ins. drawing, discloses; a preferred embodiment:
thereof, r
In the drawing,
Figure-- l aspartial perspective. view showing. the installation of a combined parting bead and Weatherstrip embodying the features of the instant; invention connection with a window frame and the window sash associated therewith; and
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same on an enlarged scale, with a slightly different type of window frame.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, reference numeral H indicates in general a portion of a window casing or frame of the box type which includes a side plank or wall member l2, having the usual parting bead receiving channel or recess l3, an outer rail or stop member l4 and an inner molding or stop member IS. The Window illustrated also includes a pair of vertically slidable window sash 16. Since it is not intended that the instant invention be limited to application to the particular type of window herein illustrated; furthendescription tliereof is thought to be unnecessary toanunderstandin of the invention. 1 7
Reference numeral l-T' indicates in general a combinedpartin'g bead and Weatherstrip em bodying the features of the invention which comprises a central portion l8 and end-portions 7 Hand 2|. The member: H is formedfrom a single strip of sheet: metaL -with the centraliporticn m extending forwardly: from theplane thereof tozprovide asubstantially U -shaped; hollow strip. or bead; having side; walls .292' and a front wal1 .z3:1 From-each'side of thefront wall 23, the metal of the" strip is bent. rearwardlyin spaced relationship to the associated. .side. wall 22, andis then folded. inwardly-backwupon itself and forwardly into: contact with the. front. wall I 23, where; it. constitutes. the forward end" of: the side wallzitz: Two: lateral walls tiara thus formed which; are disposed in. parallel... spaced relationship to the'side walls and terminate at their inner 1 ends; in rounded .edgeportions 25- which are spaced well away from theplan-e-ofthe end portions-19: ancl'2L. 'Theimember I1 is: adapted to bepositioned on; .theforward. surface ofthe side-plankv or wall member 12,, with the: end portions I9 and 2t thereof directly-adjacent the end. sliding. surfaces ofthe two window sash: L6, and thecen: tralportion It. opposite or over the: channel. or recess l3 and disposed; between the-sash: to function as a parting bead therefor. The end portions 19 and 2| are each provided. with. a pair ofparallel, longitudinal ribsor.- embossed portions 26 which constitute line contact bearing pertions for theendsliding. surfaces .of.- the. window. sash It. Directly adjacent itslongitudinal edge, the end. par tion. l9: bentforw-ardly and; back upon itself to provide afiange 21 formed as an integral part of the member I! and adapted to function as a stop for properly positioning the same on the side plank l2.
The member I1 is secured to the forward surface of the side plank I! in the following manner. Theouter rail I4 is kerfed or notched at 28 at its inner end adjacent the forward surface of the side plank l2 to provide a suitable space within'which the outer edge of the end portion 19 of the member I! may be disposed. The flange 21 will thus abut against the inner end surface of the outer rail H to properly align and position the member l'l. Suitable longitudinally spaced apertures are provided in each of the end portions [9 and 2|, adjacent their longitudinal edges, through which screws 29 may be screwed into the side plank l2 to secure the member I! thereto in the proper position, as determined by the flange 21. The inner molding I5 is then secured to the side plank I2 in the usual manner, with inner edge overlapping the longitudinal edge of the end portion 2| of the member ll.
Co-operating weatherstrips of angle form (Fig. 2), comprising metal sliding members or rails 3!, are secured with one leg against the side,
edge or sliding surface of each of the window sash l6 by suitable nails, or the like, 32. The
other or free leg of each of these angle strips 3| U extends forwardly in substantially parallel, spaced relationship to its associated sash l6, and is reinforced at its outer or forwardedge by being folded back upon itself at 33. folded edges 33 of the angle strips or rails 3| are disposed between the associated side walls 22 and folded flanges or lateral walls 24 of the central or'partingbead portion l8 of the member I1, and have a tight fit therewith to :form an interlocking slide and effective weather seal. The folding of the severalparts, as above described, provides rounded edges which avoid any scraping or undue friction between the relatively movable parts.
It will be noted also that'the ribs 26 on the endportions l9 and,2| of the combined parting bead and Weatherstrip. Ilare extended forward ly a' sufiicient distance to provide clearance for the anchored legs of the anglestrips 3|. In this manner, there will be'no contact between these anchored leg portions of the angle strips 3|. and the member ll. The free legs of the angle strips 3| are so dimensioned as to terminate a substantial distance short ofthe junction of the walls 22 and .24 of the parting bead portion l8 of the member ll. In this manner,.appreciable outward movement of the strips 3| and sash l6 relative to the member I! is permitted, which may be caused by shrinkage of the window sash, for example. Further outward movement of the strips 3| and sash IE will also be permitted without any danger of breaking the weather seal, because the particular construction of the member l1 and the manner of securing the same adjacent its ends to the side plank l2, as above described, allows limited outward flexing of the central portion l8 away from the side plank without impairing the weather-tight connection between the side plank and the end portions I9 and 2| of the member I1.
In Fig. 2, the side plank [2 has been illustrated as one not having the usual parting bead receiving channel or recess 13. This has been done for the purpose of showing that the instantinvention is equally applicable for use either in the presence or absence of the usual parting head These recess. In either case, or in any other installation, a substantially perfect weather seal is formed between the window frame and the member l1, while at the same time the parting bead portion N3 of the latter is resiliently displaceable to a certain extent relative to the window frame and/or sash. Also, with or without such displacement, a substantially perfect weather seal exists between the members I! and 3|.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment to the side surface of a window frame to provide a tight weather seal therewith, and a metal strip attached to the Window sash and having a flange projecting from said sash to beneath one of said flanges to be in interlocking engagement with said central parting bead portionto provide a tight-weather seal therewith.
2. In a window, a strip for a window sash slidably disposed in a window frame, comprising two end portions lying in substantially the same plane with each other and extending the full inner vertical length of said frame and beyond and normal to said window sash, and attached adjacent their outer edges to the side surface of said frame, and a central portion forming a hollow flange integrally'joined with said two end portions and extending from said plane to function as the usual parting-bead for the window sash and provided with folded flanges extending substantially parallel to the sides of said central portion, and metal strips attached to the window sash and having flanges projecting from said sash beneath said folded flanges to be in interlocking engagement with said central parting head portion in all positions of the sash to provide a tight weather seal therewith.
