My invention relates to improvements in door locks for automobiles, particularly of the sedan or four-door type.
The invention is designed with the particular objects in view of providing efiicient, simply constructed locking means which may be readily em bodied in present day types of automobile bodies to look all four doors simultaneously by a single motion of one of the usual door handles, and a turn of the key in said handle.
To the accomplishment of the above, and subordinate objects presently appearing, a preferred embodiment of my invention has beenillustrated in the accompanying drawings, set forth in detail in the succeeding description and defined in the claim appended hereto.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in transverse section through an automobile body midway of the front and rear doors, and illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in side elevation of the right-hand side of the body,
Figure 3 is a view in vertical section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows and drawn to an enlarged scale,
Figure 4 is a similar view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows,
Figure 5 is a view in horizontal section taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 4 looking downwardly as indicated by the arrows,
Figure 6 is a similar view taken on the line 6- 'of Figure 3 looking downwardly as indicated by the arrows,
Figure 7 is a view in perspective-of the locking bolts for the right side doors, and
Figure 8 is a similar view of the locking bolts for the left side doors together with the spreader therefor.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, I have shown therein my improved lock embodied in a conventionally illustrated automobile body including an outer wall structure I, an inner upholstery wall 2, a pair of front and rear right side doors 3, 4, a pair of front and rear left side doors 5, 6, and a pair of right and left side parting posts 1, 8, between the right and left side pairs of doors, respectively, all of the usual construction with the exceptions presently noted. The front doors 3 are of the type opening forwardly, and the rear doors open rearwardly as usual.
A door handle 9 having a standard barrel lock l0 therein operated by a key III to lock the spindie against turning is utilized in my invention, said spindle extending into a recess I2 in the right side front door 3.
According to my invention, the spindle II is provided with a pendent kidney-shaped cam it fast thereon within the recess l2 and arranged thereon to be swung, under rotation of the handle 9 into upstanding position, rearwardly or toward, the right side parting post I to project a pair of right side front and rear locking bolts l5, l6 into locking position relative to the front and rear right side doors 3 and 4, respectively.
The locking bolts 15, iii, are horizontally disposed in aligned tandem arrangement, the front bolt being mounted for endwise sliding movement in the rear of the cam l3 and in a guide socket ll having a flanged outer end it and mortised into the rear edge of the right front door 3 as shown in Figure 3. The front bolt It has its front end opposed to the cam [3 so as to be projected thereby, under swinging of said cam rearwardly, out of said guide socket I! and is provided with a depending lug l9 between which and the flange 58 of socket H a coil spring I9 is suitably interposed, said spring urging said front bolt toward a retracted position within the recess l2 and the socket ll.
The rear locking bolt I6 is mounted for endwise sliding movement in a pair of front and rear sockets 20, 2|, similar to socket l1, and mortised into the front and rear sides of the right side parting post 1, said bolt being adapted for projection rearwardly by the front bolt l5 into a. socket keeper 22 mortised into the front edge of the right side rear door 4, whereby said rear door is locked by said bolt Hi. The rear bolt I6 is urged toward retracted, unlocking position by the following means.
A bell-crank 23 is pivoted, as at 24, in a recess 25 provided in the post 1 and through which recess the bolt 16 passes, said bell-crank being operatively connected at one end to the bolt [6 by means of a stud 26 on the bell-crank extending into a staple-like lug 21 on the bolt. A coil spring 28 is suitably connected at its opposite ends to the bell-crank and to a pin 29 on said post so as to urge the bell-crank in a direction such that said bolt I6 is retracted thereby.
As will now be seen, when the handle 9 is in a pendent position, the cam I3 is swung away from the front end of the front locking bolt IS,
the spring l9 retracts the front locking bolt to unlocking position and the spring 29 through the medium of the bell-crank 23 similarly retracts the rear locking bolt l6. Thusthe front smear right side doors 3, 4. are normally un- 1 For locking the front and rear left side doors 6, 6, a pair of aligned, horizontally disposed front and rear left side locking bolts, 33, 3|, are provided in the left parting post 3. said bolts being mounted for 'endwise sliding movement in opposed spaced apart relation in a pair of front and rear sockets 32, 33, similar to sockets 23, 2|, and mortised into opposite sides'of said post 3 respectively. The left side locking bolts", 3| are adapted to be spread apart to project the same into a pair of keeper sockets 34, 35, mortised into the rear and frontedges of the doors 5, 6, respectively, whereby said doors are looked as will be clear. A coil spring 36 having its opposite ends suitably connected to said bolts 30, 3|, respectively, urges the bolts into retracted position to unlock said doors 5, 6. For spreading the left side locking bolts 36, 3|, apart into projected position, a wedge-shaped spreader 31 is provided, said spreader being vertically slidable in a guide 38 forming a continuation of the sockets 32, 33, the arrangement being such that said spreader may be raised to interpose the same between the inner ends of said bolts 30, 3| to project the latter or, lowered from such interposed relation to permit said bolts to be retracted by the spring 36. A coil spring 39 having its ends suitably connected to said spreader and to the guide 38 urges said spreader from interposed relation into retracted ineffective position.
Means are provided for raising the spreader 31 simultaneously with projection of the right side locking bolts l5, I6, so that the left side locking bolts 36, 3| are projected and consequently all the doors simultaneously, locked. The means comprises an operating connection between the bellcrank lever 23 and the spreader 31 having the form of a Bowden wire 40 suitably connected at one end to said crank and at its other end to the top end of said spreader. The wire 40 extends through a flexible tubular casing 4| suitably embedded in the posts 1, 8, and extending across the top of the automobile body between the outer and inner walls I and 2. The left side p st 6 is provided with. a recess 42 therein, similar to recess 25, into which the bolts 30, 3|, spreader 31, and spring 36 extend for play therein. Preferably the casing 4| extends to the tops of said recesses 25, 42.
Referring briefly to the operation, when the right side pair of locking bolts l5, l6, are projected, in the manner already described to lock the right side doors 3, 4, the bell-crank lever 23 is operated in one direction in opposition to the spring 28 to lift the spreader 31, through the medium of the Bowden wire 40 and thereby effect spreading of the left side locking bolts 30, 3|
to lock the left side doors 6, 6. -At this point the spindle II is locked by the key "I, the doors 3. 4, I, 6, consequently being locked. Upon unlocking of the spindle II the right side front locking bolts l5, l6 will be retracted, the former by the spring I! and the latter by the spring 23 of the bell-crank 23, thereby unlocking the right side doors 3, 4. Simultaneously, the spreader 31 will be retracted by the spring 33 to permit the spring 36 to retract the left side locking bolts 36, 3|, and therebyunlock the left side doors 5 and 6. Retraction of the right side locking bolts l5, l6
swings the cam I3 to ineffective position thereby rotating the spindle l6 and the handle 3 to unlocking position in which the handle 3 is pendent as shown in dotted lines in Figure 2.
The foregoing will, it is believed, sufllce to impart a clear understanding of my invention with out further explanation.-
Manifestly' the invention, as described, is sus- I ceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept and'right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the subjoined claim.
What I claim is:
Door locking mechanism for an automobile body of the type having right and left side pairs of front and rear doors, and right and left side supporting posts between said pairs of doors,
said mechanism comprising a spring retracted locking bolt for projection in the right front door into locking position, relative to the right front door, a spring retracted locking bolt for projection in the right side supporting post into locking position, relative to the right rear door, the first of said bolts during projection thereof engaging and projecting the other of said bolts, said bolts being axially aligned for engagement of the one by the other, a pair of locking bolts for projection in the left side supporting post into locking position relative to the left side doors and slidably mounted in said left side post in axial alignment for relative separation to project the same, a wedge-shaped spreader interposed between said last-named bolts and adapted to slide therebetween to separate said bolts, a spring connecting said last-named bolts and adapted to return said bolts to retracted position, a second spring connected to said spreader and adapted to return said spreader to its inoperative position, a bell crank adapted for operation in the right side supporting post by said second-mentioned bolt, a flexible tubular sheath for incorporation in the body structure to extend over the top of the same, and a wire connection between said bell crank and spreader and extending through said sheath, whereby'rotation of said bell crank will slide said spreader.
