Inventor: i1: w W 3 By wad/5m A iidrney 5 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in tool sharpening devices designed for use in the sharpening of scissors, knives and other tools and has for its primary object to provide a sharpening stone having a V-shaped groove in its upper surface within which the blade is positioned for drawing across the stone to be sharpened, and also providing means for yieldably maintaining the blade in engagement with the surface of the stone.
A further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efficient and reliable in performance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional View,
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the stone with the top of the cover removed, and
Figure 4 is an end elevational view.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a sharpening stone constructed of the usual abrasive material and having a V-shaped groove 6 formed in its upper surface. The stone 5 is enclosed within a metallic shell I which is open at each end, the shell including the top 3 which extends across the groove 6.
Secured to the underside of the top 8 of the shell is a plurality of leaf springs 9 having one end secured to the top of the shell by rivets It or the like and the other end of the springs are coiled and extend flatwise against one of the sides of the groove 6 as shown to advantage in Figure 4 of the drawing.
The springs 9 are provided with a cork or other non-abrasive covering I I.
One of the springs is positioned adjacent each end of the stone 5, as shown more clearly in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawing, and adapted to engage a scissors or knife blade l2 entered in the adjacent end of the device for yieldably urging the blade flatwise against one side of the groove 6 while the blade is being moved inwardly and outwardly of the shell for sharpening the blade upon the stone 5 in a manner well known in the art.
It is believed the details of construction, advantages and manner of use of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
l. A tool sharpener comprising a sharpening stone having a groove formed in its upper surface, a shell surrounding the stone, said shell being open at each end and spring means carried by the shell and adapted to engage a tool inserted in the end of the shell for yieldably urging the tool in flatwise engagement against the sides of the groove.
2. A tool sharpener comprising a sharpening stone having a groove formed in its upper surface, a shell surrounding the stone, said shell being open at each end, a plurality of leaf springs secured to the shell adjacent each end thereof and adapted to engage a tool when the latter is inserted in the end of the shell for forcing the tool flatwise against a side of the groove.
3. A tool sharpener comprising a sharpening stone having a groove formed in its upper surface, a shell surrounding the stone, said shell being open at each end, a plurality of leaf springs secured to the shell adjacent each end thereof and adapted to engage a tool when the latter is inserted in the end of the shell for forcing the tool flatwise against a side of the groove, and a cover for said springs.
4. A tool sharpener comprising a sharpening stone having a V-shaped groove in its upper surface, a shell surrounding said stone, said shell being open at each end, a pair of leaf springs having one end secured to the under side of the top of the shell adjacent each end thereof, said leaf springs being coiled with the free end portion thereof bearing flatwise against the respective sides of the groove for yieldably engaging a tool inserted in the end of the shell for urging the tool flatwise against the side of the groove.
5. A tool sharpener comprising a sharpening stone having a V-shaped groove in its upper surface, a shell surrounding said stone, said shell being open at each end, a pair of leaf springs having one end secured to the under side of the top of the shell adjacent each end thereof, said leaf springs being coiled with the free end portion thereof bearing flatwise against the respective sides of the groove for yieldably engaging a tool inserted in the end of the shell for urging the tool fiatwise against the side of the groove and a cork cover for said spring.
