7 Claims.

This invention relates to a knife such for instance as a pocket knife, and has for one of its objects to provide a more improved handle on the knife.

Another object of the invention is to provide a handle which will snugly engage the body oi the knife throughout its peripheral edge.

Another object of the invention is to provide for the securing of the handle including the cover and the bolster at a location between the bolsters.

Another object of the invention is to provide for the assembly of the handle after the bolsters are secured in position by merely manipulating the stock such as by bending and then releasing the same to provide a desired interlocking relationship. With these and other objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

lt is found in the assembly of a handle comprising a bolster unit having a narrow center portion and a cover in such an arrangement that there is no riveting of the cover on to the body of the knife, that the cover may rise along its side peripheral edges so as to provide a somewhat unsightly crack or opening in this location; and in order to avoid such undesirable effects, I have found that I may secure the narrow center por tion of the unit to the body of the knife and that this will hold the Icover in better assembled relationship by holding the handle close to the body plate at the edges thereof; and the following is a more detailed description of the present embodiment of this invention, illustrating the preferred means by which these advantageous results may vbe accomplished.

'I'he back provides the usual spring for holding the blade in either closed' or open position as desired, all of which is the usual construction mentioned only for the sake of af-l fording a basis for the new structure which is `mounted thereon.

The bolsters or end pieces i4 and l5 are connected by an intermediate portion IB, all of which is stamped out of Sheet stock in a thin, shelllike formation. Securing lingers Il and I8 are provided on the unit to be folded into notches in the ends of the plates I0 and ll to hold these bolsters securely in position; while the center portion l 6 is bent inwardly and welded or riveted as at I 9 to the plate on each side of the knife upon which the bolsters are assembled. By this arrangement, not only are the tip ends of the bolsters or end pieces held by the fingers but also the intermediate portion servesY to draw inwardly the inner edges of the ends or bolsters .so as to firmly secure these inner edges to the knife and eliminate or relieve any springiness which may have occurred from tip to tip of this unit.

A cover designated generally 20 is formed of some known non-metallic material such as Celluloid which is rather springy in nature and has its periphery 2| of such shape as to fit the body of the knife and cover the plate thereof. This cover is grooved as at 22 to receive the intermediate connection |6 and is provided with fmgers 23 'and 24 at its opposite ends to extend into and beneath the hollow bolsters as at 25 and 26 (see Fig. 2). For assembly after the bolster unit is secured in position, the cover is flexed as at 28 (see Fig. 7) so as to foreshorten the ends with the fingers thereon and then this cover is permitted to return to its original position, and at the same time the fingers extend beneath the bolsters where they t tightly therewith, while the edges of the cover fit snugly against the plate of the body and are held there by reason of the rigid connection of the inner bolster edges beneath which they extend. This manner of assembly is unique as well as the provision of the unique holding of the unit in position.

'I'he foregoing description is directed towards the method and construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the equivalent changes to which the construction and method are susceptible, the invention being dened and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.

I claim:

1. In a knife, a metal body portion, a handle comprising metal bolsters at each end connected together by a metal portion to provide a single unit, the center portion of said interconnecting portion being bent inwardly toward and welded to the body portion of the knife between said bolsters.

2. In a knife, a body portion, a handle comprising metal bolsters at each end connected together by a longitudinally-extending metal portion to provide a single unit, the center portion of said interconnecting portions being bent inwardly toward and secured to the body portion of the knife between said bolsters, and a cover member over the interconnecting portion of said unit and interlocked therewith.

In a knife, a body portion, a handle cornprising metal bolsters at each end connected together as a single unit by a central longitudinally-extending portion narrower than said bolsters, each of said interconnecting portions bent inwardly toward and having its center portion secured to the body portion of the knife between said bolsters, and a separate resilient cover member over the interconnecting portion of said unit and by its resiliency held in position and interlocked with said bolsters.`

In a knife, a body portion, a handle arranged at each side of said body portion comprising an elongated metal member having bolsters at its ends engaging and covering the outer faces of the ends of said body portion, and provided with an intermediate part completely sunken below the outer surfaces of said bolsters and integrally connecting them together to provide a single unit, said intermediate connector part having its center portion bent inwardly and fixedly secured to the adjacent side face of said body portion.

5. In a knife, a body portion, a handle arranged at each side of said body portion comprising an elongated metal member having bolsters at its ends engaging and covering the outer faces of the ends of said body portion, and provided with an intermediate part completely sunken below the outer surfaces of said bolsters and integrally connecting them together to provide a single unit, said intermediate connector part having its center portion bent inwardly and welded to the adjacent side face of said body portion.

6. In a knife, the combination with a body portion having side plates, of a handle covering each side plate comprising an elongated member having interiorly concaved bolsters at each end thereof interconnected by a relatively narrow intermediate part to provide a single unit, said intermediate part being formed with oppositely slanting end portions of gradual slope connected to the bolsters and a straight middle portion substantially parallel to and in engagement with the adjacent side plate of the knife, and means xedly securing the central portion of said intermediate part to said side plate.

7. In a knife, the combination with a body portion having side plates, of a handle covering each side plate comprising an elongated member formed of a sheet metal stamping having interiorly concaved bolsters at each end thereof engaging and covering the outer faces of the ends of said body portion and interconnected by a relatively narrow intermediate part to provide a single unit, said intermediate part being formed with oppositely slanting end portions of gradual slope connected to the bolsters and a straight middle portion substantially parallel to and in engagement with the adjacent side plate of the knife, and means xedly securing the central portion of said intermediate part to said side plate, and a separate resilient cover over the narrow intermediate part provided with a recess in its inner side to receive said part and spaced ngers at the opposite ends of said cover having interlocking connection with said bolsters.
