'I'his invention relates to spray coating apparatus and is more particularly related to apparatus for coating the interior surfaces of articles having polygonal cavities.
It has heretofore been dimcult to put an even coating on the 'interior of receptacles such asv A muffin tins, bread pans or the like by means of spray coating equipment, since the preponderance of material was deposited in the bottom of the receptacle, and if sumcientcoating material were applied to the sides, the coating on the bottom was found to be too thick while if the proper depth of coating was maintained on the bottom,
the sides were found to be insufficiently coated. The primary .object of the present invention is the. provision of means to coat Ithe interior of apolygonal cavity evenly andto accomplish the.
coating by a simple and effective mechanism for moving a spray gun in a predetermined path so that its discharge effectively and evenly coats the interior of a shallow body.
Another object of theinvention is the proing chamber in vwhich semi-solids are sprayed to permit settling and recovery of the sprayed particles.

Referring to the drawings, the -preferred embodiment of the machine includes a frame part II which carries a conveyor belt Il mounted on suitable sheaves I2 at each end of the machine and driven through a motor I3 housedl within the machine, by means of a belt or other driving vision of improved means for exhausting aspiay.-

In Fig. 5 me interior of the ygun housing la, the gun mountings and the -gun driving mecha- -nism are shown. In this figure themvement of the conveyorbelt and pans is inthe direction of the arrows, that is, from left to right in the figure. As shown, a plurality of vspray guns 2|- are mounted at spaced intervals across the machine and each of them is connected with the material conduit I1 through fieirible'connections 22 and with the air line I8 through flexible connections 24. The relationship between thespray guns 2l 4and the flexible material carrying conduits 2z and air line 24 is shown, in Fig. '1. 'mese connections are conventional, Pas is the ,spray gun,- and form no part of the present invention.
The present invention is particularly directed to the means to mount the spray guns' ,2| in such a. manner that their discharge ends are caused to move in a predetermined and adjustable orbital other polygonal receptacle such as the muffin tin' shown in Fig. 5. Auniversal mounting for each gun is provided for this purpose and, as shown in Figs-6, 'I and 8, each gun is mounted in a U-shaped yoke 30 by means of pintles 32 and is directly carried by a bracket 34. The yoke 30 is '.,carried'by a. sub-frame member 36 which extends transversely .of the machine and is mounted therein on' a stub shaft 38 so that the yoke may rotate about the axis of the shaft, the latter being Journaled in suitable bushings in the sub-frame jmember. It will thus be seen that the spray gun` body 1s free to rotate about the axis of pinues 32 and `also about the axis of stub shaft 38 so that an orbital movement may beimparted to the gun body causing it to discharge not only forwardly andrearwardly, but also to each side.

Referring to Fig. 3, it will be seen that the connecting rod I4 is driven from an electric motor Il through the medium of reduction gearing 5 driving a shaft 50. The shaft 50. carries a crank arm B2 to which the connecting rod is connected,

This pro'` vision may simply take vthe form of a slotted crank arm and a pin connection for the connecting rod 4L The connections for the connecting rod 44 are preferably duplicatedat each end so as to provide uniformity of movement.` At the end opposite the motor a bearing shaft 5l is mounted in a suitable bracket 56 carried by the 'frame of the machine and is connected to a pulley 58 similar in size to a companion drive pulley 60 driven by drive shaft 50. .The two 20 pulleys are connected by a belt 62.
It will be seen from the above described driving connections' that with the parts shown in the position in Fig. 5, the discharge is toward A the rear side of the approaching muiiln tins.
Movement of the crank arm 52v will pull the connecting rod u around to a forward position and in so doing will move the gun body in a circular path, tilting 'it both about the axis of shaft 38 and at the same time about the mounting pintles 32. When the connecting rod has reached its diametrically opposite position, the direction of discharge will be, toward the rear of the muiiin tins so that the guns will effectively coat the surshown in Fig. 5. It will be seen that during the v time the gunshave moved fromone position to the other, one lateral Wall will have received its coating. Return of the guns to the position shown will coat lthe opposite lateral wall. The length of the orbital path of the spray guns may be adjusted for small or large receptacles by -adjusting the throw of the crank which drives coni necting rodv 4l. For small receptacles a short throw lwill suffice,` while larger receptacles require a longer crank throw vto-,produce greater movement of the spray guns. An exhaust chamber, constructed substantially as shown in Fig. 4 is provided adjacent the chamber in which the spray guns are mounted. vThe exhaust hood does not communicate directly with the spray-chamber, however, but is bailled therefrom'by a lateral wall 6l which has depending side flanges 66 extending downwardly, preferably below the plane of the' conveyor belt Il. At each side of the machine a housing. 68 .is formed which communicates at its upper end with the exhaust hood 20 and which has a volume greatly in excess of the volume between baille 64 and the surface of the conveyor belt so that solid particles carried by the air stream into the housing will be depositedwithin the chambers 68 and the air alone exhausted through hood 20. Any suitable means may be used to regulate the discharge kof the spray 2l and any desired typ of gun construction may be employed.. 05 While the invention has' been described in connection with a lparticular form and disposition of the parts, various changes will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.` Such changes may be made without departing from the invention as dened in the appended claims.
What I claim -as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
