Description

Nov. 11, 1941. H. HELGASON ADJUSTABLE LADDER BUCKET HOOK Filed Aug. 7, 1940 11616! Ha GASON Patented Nov. 11, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ADJUSTABLE LADDER BUCKET HOOK Helgi Helgason, Los Angeles, Calif.
Application August 7, 1940, Serial No. 351,748
3 Claims.
This invention relates to painting and decorating and more especially to an adjustable ladder bucket hook.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and inexpensive adjustable hook for paint buckets and the like, adapted for use with ladders and similar types of apparatus.
Another object of the invention is to provide an adjustable bucket hook which may be suspended from a flat surface.
A further object is to provide an adjustable hook for use with ladders wherein the bucket may be so suspended as to be free from the steps or rungs of the ladder.
Other objects and advantages will appear and be brought out more fully in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a view showing my invention in use with a step ladder;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the invention suspended from a ladder rung;
Fig. 3 is a side view of the bucket hook portion of the invention;
Fig. 4 is an edge view of the same;
Fig. 5 is a view showing the hook suspended from a rung of an extension ladder; and
Fig. 6 is a view illustrating the mode of suspension from a fiat surface near the edge thereof.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, I show a bucket hook having a ladder hook portion 1 and a bucket hook portion 8 each comprising a steel wire extending through an aperture in a pivot block 9. Hook portion 1 which will preferably be made of tempered steel, has a flanged head ID by which block 9 is suspended and is further provided with a shoulder or other enlarged portion H which limits the distance block 9 can be slipped on portion 1 so as to compact the device in order that it may be carried in a pocket or tool box and occupy a minimum of space. Hook portion 1 has a substantially horizontal portion I2 and a downwardly extending portion I3 having a sharpened point M. Portion I2 is adapted to lie flat along the fiat step of a step ladder or the like while the corner between portions [2 and I3 provides suspension means from a round rung of a ladder of the extension type.
Bucket hook portion 8 has a shouldered head l5 by which it is suspended from block 9 and is provided with a shoulder l6 which limits the movement of the hook portion in the aperture in block 9. Portion 8 is provided with a loop I! by which a bail I8 of a bucket l9 can be suspended without likelihood of the bail being inadvertently released from the hook when carryingthe bucket or changing the position thereof. The bucket hook portion 8 by its pivotal suspension in block 9 and pivotal suspension of block 9 on portion 1 permits the bucket l9 to be suspended from a ladder as shown in Figs. 1 and 5 so that the bucket hangs outside of the ladder rails. Fig. 5 further shows the suspension of the bucket hook between the left side rails of an extension ladder and permits the extension portion of the ladder to be moved without fouling the bucket hook.
In Fig. 6 I show the bucket hook suspended from a flat portion of a window or door frame, the sharpened point 14 engaging the frame member so as not to slip therefrom.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. An adjustable ladder bucket hook as described comprising an elongated shank member having a downwardly extending portion provided with a pair of spaced abutments and a laterally extending portion provided with a hook, a laterally extending bearing block having an aperture adapted to receive said downwardly extending shank portion between said abutments and an aperture for a bucket bail hook, a bucket bail hook having a shank portion extending through said bearing block aperture and having a pair of limiting abutments and a curved over-lapping terminal portion adapted to prevent accidental release of bucket bail therefrom.
2. In a device of the character described, in combination, an apertured block, a hook positioned in one of said apertures and having shoulders thereon whereby vertical movement of the hook with respect to the block is limited, a second hook, said second hook being positioned in another of said apertures and having shoulders thereon whereby lateral movement of the said hook with respect to the block is limited.
3. In a bucket hook, in combination, an upper and a lower section having substantially parallel stems, a block positioned transversely of the 1ongitudinal axes of said stems and having apertures therein to receive said stems, and shoulders, certain of said shoulders being positioned upon each of said stems to form stop limits, one of said sections being provided with an end portion substantially parallel with its stem, the other of said sections being formed with an open loop.
HELGI HELGASON.
