Description
Nbv. 11 1941 N. SOLOMON 2,262,060
BARRETTE Filed Feb, 5, 1940 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 11, 1941 BARRETTE Nathan L. Solomon, Mount Vernon, N. Y. Application February 5, 1940, Serial No. 317,435
4 Claims.
The subject matter of the invention is a barrette for clasping and improving the dress of hair and the objects, advantages and improved functional and structural features thereof will be apparent from the teachings of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the barrette according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional View on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a back View of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of another embodiment according to the invention.
In each of the embodiments disclosed, the barrette is in the form of a supporting ornamental body I preferably of a suitable moldable ma terial such as a plastic pyroxylin and herein illustrated to simulate the shape of a ribbon in which the front arm or bar II of the flexible metal hair clasp I2 is anchored. This is accomplished in first positioning the clasp between complementary dies. Thereafter the dies are closed and liquid pyroxylin under pressure is forced about the front arm I I and about the front curved terminals I3 of the current ends or loops I4 integral with arm I I. Thus the entire outside surface of bar II and the arched terminals I3 are covered and fixedly anchored into the pyroxylin body. It will be observed that the terminals I3 are thus arranged against curved shoulders I and are retained against these shoulders by covering bridge or backing I6 of the pyroxylin body merging with the side portion I'I defining with the merged front part I8 of the body the elongated and longitudinally curved channel or slot I9 in which in fact the front bar of the clasp is rigidly anchored and retained against longitudinal, transverse, or widthwise displacement relative to the supporting ribbon or backing II] which by the present arrangement is reinforced and strengthened by the submerged closely confined bar I I, and since corresponding and arched terminals I3 are also anchored against the curved shoulders I5 by the terminal and complementary curved lips 20 of the closure bridge I6, even accidental longitudinal displacement of the clasp is precluded.
Integral with one of the curved ends I4 is the swingable arm 2I embodying free lip 22 adapted to be snapped under or locked by the keeper portion 23, as is well understood.
In the unlocked relation of lip 22 from the keeper 23, the arcuate and rear arm 2| extends an appreciable distance away from the ornamental body IU thus providing a fairly'large gap to permit convenient insertion of a tress of hair which may be securely clamped by hingedly moving the free arm 2| towards the anchored bar I I and by hooking lip 22 under the keeper 23. The tress is thus clamped as desired.
In the form according to Fig. 5, the bridge I6 is provided with a plurality of teeth 24 which cooperate to prevent accidental displacement of the closed barrette when clamping the tress. In other aspects, the form according to Fig. 5 is along-the structural lines of the embodiment illustrated in Figs. .1-4 and thus in each of the forms disclosed, a U-shaped part of the clasp defined by bar II and terminals I3 is anchored and covered by the pyroxylin body I0.
According to the invention the arched terminals I3 and the curved ends I I in fact characterize end or side loops to one of which the swingable clamping arm H is integrally merged to provide the reflexed hinge 25 as is well understood.
Various changes maybe made in details or construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof inherent therein.
I claim:
1. In combination, a body having an elongated slot, shoulders at spaced ends of said slot, a U-shaped portion comprising a bar disposed in said slot and having terminals seated against said shoulders, a bridge merged with said body and completely concealing said bar andterminals only, curved ends integral with said terminals and free of said body, a swingable arm merged with one of said curved ends, and a keeper for disengageably locking said arm.
2. In combination, a body having an elongated slot, curved shoulders at spaced ends of said slot, 2. U-curved portion comprising a bar disposed in said slot and having arched terminals seated against said shoulders, a bridge merged with said body and concealing and closely confining said bar and terminals, curved ends integral with said terminals and free of and projecting rearwardly of said body, a swingable arm merged with one of said ends, and a keeper for disengageably locking said arm.
3. In combination, abody having an elongated slot, curved shoulders at spaced ends of said slot, a U-shaped portion comprising a bar disposed in said slot and having arched terminals seated said slot and having arched terminals seated against said shoulders, a bridge merged with said body to completely conceal and closely confine said bar in said slot and having curved lips concealing and closely confining said terminals, resilient curved ends integral with said terminals and free of said body, a swingable arm resiliently merged with one of said ends, said bridge having a plurality of spaced teeth, and a keeper for dis- 10 engageably locking said arm.
