1 Claim.
This invention is an apparatus operable by the passage of objects traveling in spaced succession, and is particularly applicable to the counting of steel sheets horizontally traveling in spaced succession.
A specific example of the invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 2 is a top view,
More specifically, the drawing shows a plurality of steel sheets S horizontally traveling in spaced succession over an upwardly pointing nozzle I provided with compressed air by a pipe 2. An inverted, vertically reciprocative cup 3 is positioned above the traveling path of the sheets S in line with the air jetting from the nozzle 9, this cup being mounted by a shaft 4 riding in bearings 5 supported in a frame 6.
As the sheets pass over the nozzle l they intercept the air jetting upwardly from this nozzle, the cup 3 falling to a low position. When the jetting air is not intercepted by the sheets, it impinges the cup 3 and lifts the latter to a high position. The movement of the cup 3 may be used to operate a suitable mechanism.
The drawing shows the upper end of the shaft 4 as carrying a contactor'l which works against fixed contacts 8 connected by lines 9 in circuit with an electrically actuated counter in. With this arrangement, the mechanism actuated by the cup 3 is the counter Ill. Thus, it is possible to count the number of the steel sheets traveling in, spaced succession over the nozzle 8, Without resorting to delicate electrical devices or other arrangements which might easily get out of order. The apparatus of the invention is simple, rugged, and will stand much abuse.
We claim:
Apparatus for counting objects traveling in spaced succession, comprising an upwardly directed nozzle beneath the traveling path of the objects, means for supplying this nozzle with compressed air, a vertically reciprocative cup inverted over said path in line with said nozzle, said cup being lifted by air jetting from said nozzle except when intercepted by the objects, a counting device, and means for rendering said device responsive to movement of said cup.
