STEAM-GENERATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,072, dated March 30, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES HOLLAND, of the city of Chicago, Cool: county, State ot Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Steam-Generators, of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view; Fig. 2, a side clevation; Fig. 8. a vertical section on line 00 wet Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a horizontal section on line yy of Fig. 2, looking upward.
My present improvements are primarily designed to be used in connection with hydro carbon vapor as a fuel, which vapor may be generated substantially in the manner shown and described in my Patent No. 203,828, of May 21, 1878, in which patent I have shown devices for producing heat and at the same time generating gas for illuminating purposes. I now use devices similar to those there shown for producing heat and generating steam for mechanical purposes.
In the drawings, A represents the vertical wall of a cylindrical tirechamber, B, the top of which is closed, except that there is a central opening, a, through which smoke, it there be any, or the products of combustion, can es-' cape. O is another vertical cylindrical wall a little distance from the wall A.
D is a head which is secured to the lower end of the wall A, and also to the wall 0, in a water-tight manner. It also covers a portion of the lower end of the tire-chamber B, leavin g a large central opening, I), for the passage of air to the fire-chamber, which air may be admitted through holes 0, or in any other suitable manner.
E is a water reservoir or space between the walls A (3, which reservoir surrounds the firechamber 13, and, as shown, is covered at the top, except that there is a central opening or pipe, (I, for the escape of smoke or the pro ducts of combustion.
F is a retort, having four separate chambers, as shown and described in my former patent.
e is a tube for the admission of water to one of the chambers of the retort. f is a tube for the admission of oil to another chamber of the retort, for generating hydrocarbon vapor and producing heat, as described in my said former patent.
g is a tube leading from the water-reservoir E to one or" the chambers of the retort. h is a water-tube leading from a suitable source of supply to another chamber in the retort. The steam generated in this last-mentioned chamber passes through the pipe h to the pipe g, and is used as an injector.
G is a steam-coil located in the fire-chamber B, one end of which steam-coil communicates with that chamber in the retort into which the water from the reservoir E is carried, and the other end communicates with a steam-chamber', H, also located in the fire-chamber above the retort and steam-coil. I is a pipe through which steam is taken from the steam-chamber to the cylinder of the engine. I is a pipe which also communicates with the steam-chamber H, and is connected with a safety'*-valve. dis a blow-oft pipe connected with the water-reservoir E. j is a blow-off pipe from the steamgenerating chamber in the retort.
A door and passage may be provided, through which access can be had to the fire-chamber, it necessary.
In use heat is generated substantially as described in my said former patent, which heat generates steam in that chamber of the retort into which the pipe 9 leads, and also pervades the whole fire-chamber. This fire-chamber, bein g surrounded by the water-reservoirE, is completely protected from atmospheric influences, and very nearly all of the heat generated is utilized, and the water in the reservoir soon becomes heated to a high temperature. The watcr is admitted intov the retort in small quantities, and becomes at once converted into steam and passes through the coil G, which is exposed to the intense heat, and all moisture becomes converted into steam, so that dry steam is provided, and the steam-chamber being in the tire-chamber and protected by the waterreservoir, as above described, condensation will be prevented.
The steam-chamber B may be dispensed with when the work to be performed is uniform; but when-not uniform the steam-chamber will be found desirable.
The water-reservoirE is carried down below the inlet-pipe g; and the water in the reservoir becoming very hot, foreign matters therein will mostly be precipitated to the bottom of the reservoir, and can be removed through the blow-off pipe.
The reservoir E must be filled from time to time, as occasion requires, which can be done through the opening at the top. The capacity of the reservoir must be adapted to circumstances.
The steam-generator may be used with both portable and stationary engines.
The walls of the fire-chamber and of the water-reservoir may be made of boiler-iron. In manufacturing, the top m of the fire-chamber may be omitted, the side walls, A, being connected directly with the' head 12.. A coil of any suitable size and capacity, arranged in any suitable manner, may be used.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. In a steam-generator, the steam-tight water-reservoir E, surrounding the feed fire-chamber B, in combination with such fire-chamber and a steam-coil, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The combination of the water-reservoir E, fire-chamber B, inlet-pipes e f g, retort F, and coil G, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
3. The combination of the water-reservoir E, fire-chamber B, inlet-pipes e f g, retort F, steamcoil G, and steam-chamber H, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The water-supply reservoir E, surrounding the fire-chamber B, and extending below the water-pipe g, leading from the water-reservoir to the retort F, for the purpose of providing a sediment chamber or space, 1', to partly purify the Water before it reaches the generator, substantially as specified.
5. In a steam-generator, the retort F, provided with a blow-off pipe, in combination with a fire-chamber, B, and water-reservoir E,-substantially as specified.
