SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersA Patent No. 226,018, dated Marchi-30, 1880.
Application filed February 2G, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, GEORGE F. BEEBE and WALTER 0. BEEBE, citizens of the United States, residing at Hornellsville, in` the county of Steuben and State of New -York, have jointly invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Pumps; and we do hereby decla-re the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as To will .enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the mmc, r`renierence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to -letters or igures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication. y
Our invention consists of a novel construction of a double-actil'lg pump having valveless pistons and open cylinders, acting either as a suction, a submerged, or a force pump, and 2o also in certain new devices and combinations,
all of which will be understood by the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical section of our improved pump on the line ofthe working level. Fig. 2 is a transverse section. Fig. 3 is an enlarged View of the cylinders, pistons, and valves. Fig. 4
is a detached view of the stud for the pump to rest upon in the bottom of the well. Figs.
3o 5 and 6 are views of the ball-valves, valveseats, and packings.
The double-way pipes A A and B Bl are r cast in one piece. They have an easy curve,
in the form of an inverted arch, thus giving 3 5 a free iow to the water. This casting is very compact, and coupled centrally below to the pipe O and above to the pipe G. It is cast with hubs a a', to receive the valve-seats, packing',
and lower ends of the hollow cylinders F F.
4o When the valve-seats, packing, and lower ends of the cylinders'are put into these hubs the cap E is pressed down upon the tops of the cylinders by means ofl the single nutI, thus fastenv ingthe parts and packing the valves and lower ends of the Vcylinders in the hubs an. This cap H acts as a guide to the piston-rods K.
A By this construction my pump maybe placed at different heights abovethe water, or sub- .merged at pleasure, by simply changing thel piston-rods K K, to suit the purpose desired.
At the lower end of pipe C we employ a short stud, D, for the pump to rest upon and for drawing the water all out ofthe well; but for drawingclear water only we substitute a 5 5 longer stud, D'.
The central discharge-pipe, G, is provided with an air-chamber, L, which is spherical, or nearly so, this being the best form for an airchamber.
The lever M, for working the pump, has its fulcrum N on the air-ch amber, and is provided with connectilg-rods O, attached to the pistonrods, which are prevented from side sway and made to run true by means of the guideways in the ends of the cap.
The piston-cylinders F F are cast without any Iianges and fastened in place by means ofthe cap H, pressed down by the nut I, thus packing the bottom of the cylinders and valve- 7o seats in the hubs a a'.
The pistons P P consist of a disk of rubber, held between the two caps p p, the lower one of which has a stem, s, passing through the rubber. The upper end of this stem has a screw-thread to receive the nut T, and thus hold the upper cap and compress the rubber at pleasure. The stem also has a female screw to receive the lower end of the piston-rod K. By this construction the piston is complete 8o in'itself, and when worn may be removed and replaced by a new one, or the piston-rod K may be removed and replaced by a longer or shorter one at pleasure.
The supply-valves It B and the dischargevalves S S are made with a metallic valveseat, s, or diskl bf metal, corresponding to the bottom of the cylinders, and placed between two pieces of leather packing. These valveseats and the bottoms of the cylinders are 9o packed by the action of the single nutI pressing down upon the cap H on the top of the cylinders.
The motion of these valves and the direction in which the water flows will be fully understood by the dotted lines and the arrows on the drawings.
We prefer double ball-valves, (shown in Figs.

We make two plates or Valve-seats, V V', and attach baskets g thereto, as shown in Fig. and then insert the balls into the baskets through the holes in the plate. Two'smaller holes, h, serve as the valve-seats when the two plates are brought together, as shown in Fig. 5, the packing U being placed between the plates V V'.
The castings in our pump require very little iitting or machine work, and we save the expense of the ordinary screw-bolts, the single nut I, on the central discharge-pipe, and the cap I-I uniting the different parts at a single operation, and making the valves easily accessible for repairs, if necessary.
rlhe manner of attaching the lever to the air-chamber and the arrangement of all the parts make our pump very compact as a whole.

Having described our invention, what We claim is l. The double'way pipes A A' and B B',
cast in one piece and forming inverted arches having hubs a a to receive thc valve-seats, packing, and lower ends of the cylinders F F', and coupled centrally to the pipe C below and the pipe G above, substantially as set forth.
2. The mit T. and cap H on the dischargepipe Gr, for fastening the cylinders F F', sub' stantially as described.
3. 1n a combined suction, submerged, and force pump, the combination of the double-Way pipes A A B B' with the pistons and pistoncylinders and the piston-rods K, inserted into the stem s, and having guides in the cap H, substantially as set forth. t
4. The two plates or Valve-seats V V', with the packing U between them, said plates hav'- ing a larger hole or holes, through which the ball is inserted into the basket g, and a smaller hole or holes, h, substantially as set forth.
