KEY-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,016, dated March 30, 1880.
Application filed May 12, 1879. 7
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID D. BARTON, of York, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Burglar-Proof Key-Retainer Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making apart of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l is an elevation of a door provided with a box lock and its appropriate catch, showing the application of my improved keyretainer; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the door, showing the construction of the retainer.
This invention has relation to improvements in key-retainers, the object of which is to prevent the key from being turned surreptitiously from the outside.
The nature of the invention consists in the combination, with a door-frame having the usual catch, a door hinged in said frame, a lock secured to said door on a level with the catch, and a key operating the lock-bolt and provided with a prismatic part just outside of the key-hole, of an endwise-movable springactuated retainer-plate having a notch in its end adapted to receive the prismatic part of the key, bent to rise over the lock, arranged in guides upon the door, and having an enlarged heel, compressing and serving as a hearing for the spring actuating the retainer, as hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letterA designates the door, hinged in the usual way in a door-frame, B, provided with a catch, 0, of the usual construction.
D indicates a lock secured to the door on a level with the catch (J, and provided with a bolt shot by a key, E, in any suitable manner. This lock is attached to the door in the cus tomary manner, and its key, just outside of the key-hole, is squared to correspond with a notch, a, in the contiguous end of a retainer-plate, F.
The plate F is made of sheet metal of suitable thickness, or it may be cast, if desired, and is composed of a portion, 0, resting upon the door, a part, b, rising to the height of the lock, and a part, b, overhanging. the same, the latter being provided with a rectangular notch, a, adapted to engage the squared portion a of the key.
The part b of the retainer-plate is confined These locks are manufactured according to 6 fixed patterns, and the key-holes are made equidistant from the inner edges of the lock both for right and left hand doorsthat is, doors hinged to the right or left hand jamb of the door'case. Consequently the retainer is applicable to either right or left hand doors indifferently.
I In practice the notch a. may be made somewhat deeper than is usual, and the part I) of the retainer somewhat longer than necessary, to adapt the said retainer to locks where the distance from the key-hole to the edge of the lock is slightly greater than customary.
' What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a key-retainer, the combination, with a lock, D, having a key, E, with prismatic portion a, and secured to a door upon its inside,
A of a sliding retainer, F, having the part I) resting on the door and sliding through guides 01 d, the part b rising over the lock, and the part I) overhanging the same and notched to engage the key, the bracket 0, secured to the door,
and the spring S, secured at one end to the bracket and at the other to the flangef of the c retainer, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
' DAVID D. BARTON.
Witnesses D. M. WI'rMnYER, M. ELIOKER.
