THREE-WAY CHAIR Filed April 16, 1940 'i 22 zz z/ Z X A 25 Z5 P Z0 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Patented Oct. 21, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE THREE-WAY CHAIR Gordon E. Dannels, Pittsburgh, Pa.
Application April 16, 1940, Serial No. 329,974
1 Claim.
This invention relates to an article of fumiture having several uses and designed to provide a three-way chair.
One object of the invention is to provide a seat supported by converging supports in one position of the chair.
Another object of the invention is to provide a seat in which the supports are turned through an angle of ninety degrees, in a second position of the chair, to provide a nursery chair.
A further object of the invention is to provide a chair wherein the relative parts perform different functions in the first and second positions.
A further object is to provide an apparatus of this character which will be formed of a few strong, simple and durable parts, which will be inexpensive to manufacture, and which will not easily get out of order.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the chair in its first position.
Figure 2 is a sectional view of Figure 1 taken on the line 2-2.
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the chair turned through an angle of ninety degrees to the first position to provide a nursery chair.
Figure 4 is a sectional elevation of Figure 3 taken on the line 4-4.
Figure 5 is similar to Figure 4 with a cover overlying the nursery chair seat.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts in the various views, a three-way chair is shown comprising a rectangular member I9, which forms a seat in one position of the chair, the rectangular member being secured to the upper ends of tapered converging side members I I and I2 which co-act with the member I0 in forming a bench-like seat when the member In is disposed in a horizontal plane as shown in Figure 1. This will be known as thefirst position of the chair.
A center-piece I3, provided with a circular opening I4, is secured at the ends to the side members II and I2 at the vertical median line of the side members. The center-piece is also secured at its top edge to the underneath face of the member ID. The bottom edges of the side members are cut away to provide respective recesses I5 and I6 to reduce weight.
The side members II and I2 may be turned through an angle of ninety degrees from the first position of the chair, as shown in Figures 3, 4 and 5, to constitute what will be known as the second position of the chair with the member ID disposed vertically, in which position of the parts the chair constitutes a nursery seat and the member I0 constitutes the back rest support thereof. In the second position of the chair the chair may also be known as a potty chair since a vessel for use by an infant may be disposed under the opening I4.
A cover panel I8 for the opening I4 is hinged to the center-piece I3 adjacent the combined seat and back rest support I0 as shown at 2I. A back rest I1 is hinged to the cover panel I8 at the hinged end of the cover panel as shown at 22 to provide a comfortable chair as shown in Figure 5 in the second position. In this position of the parts the back rest I3 rests against the combined seat and back rest support I0 and the cover panel I8 rests on the center-piece I3 as shown in Figure 5.
, In the first position of the chair the cover panel I8 and the back rest I1 hang downwardly from their hinged connection 2| with the center-piece I3 as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The cover panel and back rest thus conceal the opening I4 in the center-piece when the chair is viewed from the front.
To conceal the opening I4 when the chair is viewed from the back, a panel I9 is secured to the center-piece by suction cups 211. The panel is disposed on the opposite side of the centerpiece I 3 from the cover panel I8 and back rest IT, as shown in Figure 2.
A pair of eye screws 23 are secured to the combined seat and back rest support I0. These eye screws receive the ends of a strap for holding an infant in the chair when the chair is used in the second position.
From the above description it is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will be fully understood without further explanation.
What is claimed is:
A chair comprising, a member serving as a seat when disposed in a horizontal plane and as a back rest support when disposed in a vertical plane, side pieces forming legs secured to the ends of the member and diverging from the member, a center member secured at the ends to the side pieces and having an opening to accommodate a nursery vessel, a cover for the opening hinged to the center member adjacent the combined seat and back rest support, a back rest superposed on and pivotally secured to the cover near the combined seat and back rest support, and a panel detachably connected to the center member remote from the hinge of the cover.
