St. Louis, Mo., a corpo'r'aticn10ilylissouri'` l' Application December 4, 1939, serial No. 307,369
(Cl. 20S- 44) 3 Claims.
This invention relates generally to container lids. More particularly, my invention relates to a certain new and useful improvement in lids especially, though not exclusively, adapted for containers for foodstuffs and the like for visually displaying the contents thereof and has for its primary objects the provision of a transparent lid of the class and for the purpose stated, Which may be readily and cheaply manufactured, which is light in weight and conveniently handled, which is durable and substantially unbreakable, which may be readily transferred from one container to another, and which is highly ecient in the performance of its stated functions.
And with the above and other objects in View, my invention resides in the novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts presently described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a container lid constructed in accordance with and embodying my present invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevational view, partly broken away and in section, of the lid;
Figures 3 and 4 are enlarged fragmentary transverse sectional views of the lid, taken approximately along the lines 3-3 and 4-4, respectively, Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of a container equipped with a lid of my present invention;
Figure 6 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of the lid, illustrating in more detail,
the hinge structure thereof; and
Figure 'l is a perspective view of a modif-led container lid embodying my present invention.
Referring now in more detail and by reference characters to the drawing, which illustrates practical embodiments of my present invention, the annular lid A of Figures 1 to 6, both inclusive, is particularly adapted for use with a cylindrical box or container and includes a skeleton body-member or frame in the form preferably of a flat metallic split band or ring I formed along one margin with an outwardly and upwardly curled channel-providing bead or rim, as at a, and having its ends abutted, as at bl, and secured together by means preferably of a short suitably arcuate rod 2 tted in the rim or channel a and spanning the joint b, as best seen in Figure 2.
Suitably stretched or disposed over the area of the ring I and its opposite margin or rim, is a top member 3 pressed or died out of an initially flat sheet of suitably flexible preferably transparent synthetic material, such, for instance, as cellulose acetate, and laterally flanged, as at c, to snugly t over the outer face of the ring or band I and downwardly into the bead a, which latter is thereupon crimped or rolled inwardly into retentively gripping or clamping engagement with the marginal fiange c for maintaining the top member 3 rmly in position, all as best seen in Figures 3 and 4.
At a suitablel location in its side face, the lid A is provided with a suitably elongated oblongrectangular aperture, as at 4, the outer margin of which is preferably flush with the crimpedover margin of the bead a for forming a spindlelike rim-section 5 for rotative disposition within the curled-over portion Ii of a U-shaped metallic clip B sized for clampwise engagement over the upper margin or rim of a conventional cylindrical container C, all as best seen in Figures 5 and 6.
So constructed, the lid A is very conveniently placed on a container C and provides for the container a substantially unbreakable window for visually displaying its contents. As conveniently, the lid A may be swingably manipulated with respect to the container C for enabling facile Withdrawal of its contents. The lid A is hence particularly serviceable and useful in grocery and like establishments for the safe and sanitary display of foodstus of various types, the lid being quite easily transferred for repeated use from one container to another. Further, the lid A is inexpensive and may be readily manufactured, and the lid, while preferably, as described, of circular form, may equally well partake of other forms or contour, as, for example, the oblong-rectangular conformation A illustrated in Figure 7.
It should be understood that other changes and modifications in the form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of the lid may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure b y Letters Patent is:
1. A container lid comprising a frame constructed from a fiat split strip having a substantially tubular bead along a longitudinal margin and its ends in abutment, a rod-like member disposed in the bead across the line of abutment of the strip-ends for holding the strip in frame formation, a exible top member extending over the area of the frame and clampingly held along its margin by the inturned edge of the bead, and a hinge-forming member rotatably mounted on the bead having a U-shaped extension for clipwise engaging the margin of a container.
2. A container lid comprising a frame constructed from a i'lat split strip having a bead of substantially circular cross-section along a longitudinal margin and its ends in abutment, a rod-like member disposed in the bead across the line of abutment of the strip-ends for holding the strip in frame formation, a exible top member disposed over the area of the frame and clampingly held along its margin by said bead; said strip and flexible member being provided with registering segmental slots lying along and above the bead, and a hingeforming member integrally including a curled-over portion extending through the slot for rotatably engaging the bead and a U-shaped extension for clipwise engaging the margin of a container.
3. A container lid comprising an annular frame constructed from a flat split strip having a substantially circular bead along one longitudinal margin and its ends in abutment, a short rod-like member disposed in the bead across the line of abutment of the strip-ends for holding the strip in frame formation, a flexible top member disposed over the area of the frame and clampingly held along its margin by said bead, and a hinge-forming member integrally including a curled-over portion for rotatably engaging the bead and a U-shaped extension for clipwise engaging the margin of a container.
