PUROHES MILES, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CLOTHES-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent Np. 225,942, dated March 30, 1880.
Application filed September 15, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PURCHES MILES, of the: city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State a side view, partly in section, of my improved clothes-hook; Fig. 2, a front or end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view of the hookbody before it is attached to the bracket-plate. Fig. 4 is a front or face view of the bracketplate; Fig. 5, a back view of the same; Fig. 6, a detail side view, and Fig. 7 a detail vertical section, of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to an improved hook for the suspension of garments and similar purposes, the object being to produce a hook which is light and durable, of simple construction, and which does not necessarily require any solder in its manufacture.
The invention consists in the combination of a double bent wire, which forms the body of the hook, with a bracket-plate of peculiar construction; also, in the several details of improvement hereinafter more fully pointed out.
In the drawings, the letter A represents the wire body of my improved clothes-hook. B is The wire body thickness of wire, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The ends f and g of the wire A are situated at the back of the hook, and are in line one above the other, and but a short distance apart from each other. 'The arms (1 e are bent upward, or otherwise shaped to constitute two beaks or hooks proper for the suspension of the garment.
The bracket-plate B is made of wrought metal or equivalent material, and is crossshaped, it being composed of two grooved posts, j and l, which are in line with each other, and of two laterally-proj ectin g perforated ears, m m. The screws or equivalent fastening devices for securing the bracket-plate to a wall are put through or applied to said ears m m, as indicated in Fig. 2. Between the two posts erably perforated, as shown at h, to economize material and for greater convenience of attaching the hook-body A.
In order to unite the parts A and B into a complete hook, the bracketB is placed between the two thicknesses of the wire a, near the back or middle portion of the same, so that the upper grooved post, j, will be in front of and somewhat above the end f, and the lower grooved post in front of and somewhat below the end 9 of the wire A. The face portion a of the wire A fits into a groove, 1), which is formed in front of the plate B. (See Figs. 1 and 7.) The back portion '5 of the wire A fits into the grooves that are formed at the backs of the posts j and l, as is indicated in Figs. 1, 5, and 7. The two endsfg of the wire A are thereupon bent forward into the depression or aperture h, thereby securely uniting the parts A and B.
For still more securely fastening the wire A i to the plate B, I provide each of its posts j l with forwardly-projectin g lips r 1', which, after the wire A has been applied, are bent over the part a. of the wire, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Similar lips, s s, are or may be formed at the back of the plate B and bent over the parti of the wire body A, as indicated in Fig. 1. A
t t are grooved balls or plates of metal or other material placed respectively into the loops of the arms d e, and secured therein by slightly contracting the wire directly behind said balls. These balls, which serve to strengthen the hooks and to ornament the sam e, are thus clamped between the two thicknesses of wire which constitute the body A of the hook, the wire resting within the groove of each ball to prevent lateral displacement of the same.
The entire clothes-hook may be further embellished in suitable manner. It will be found of sufficient strength for all practical purposes, and may be put together without the use of any solder or brazing.
, I claim- 1. The combination of the hook A, shaped to form two double arms, (1 and c, with the bracket-plate B, in which the wire is clamped, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The wire hook A, having disconnected 5. The combination of the wire hook A with the grooved balls or plates t t, substantially as herein shown and described.
6. The wire hook A, bent double and combined with a bracket-plate, which is clamped between the two thicknesses a and i of said wire, substantially as herein shown and described.
