3 Claims (on;
This invention relates, to boilers of the type adapted to be used in connection with hot'water or steam. heating systems for residences and other buildings;
More particularlythe; invention relates in; a gas-fired boiler of the character described.
One important object of" the' invention is to provide a novel construction of boilerof this type having walls of extreme'thinness to insure efficient passage ofv heat from the fire space to the water within the boiler.
A second important object of this invention is to provide a novel boiler arrangement having corrugated walls which not only increase-the heating area but also serve'to reinforce thethin walls above mentioned..
A third important object of the invention is to provide an improved boiler having a novel arrangementof waterlegs' and gas burner-tubes, whereby the gases of-combustiorr are caused to flow over the surfaces of'the water legs in amamner to insure high efliciency of-heat utilization.
A fourth important object of the invention is to provide a novel boiler construction, provided with improved fire leg and auxiliary air inlet means, so constructed as tocause the hot products ofcombustion to move in a relatively slow manner over the surfacescontaeted by said' pontions; so that ample time-is afforded-- for transmission of heat to the waterwithin the boiler With the above and other objects in view, as will be presently apparent; the inventionconsists in general of certain novel-detailsof: construction and combinations of'part's hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out inthe appended claims; a
In the accompanying drawings, likecharactersof reference indicate like parts in the several views, and a V Figure 1 is a vertical diametric section through a boiler and its burner as constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 isa section on the line 2--2 ure. 1.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of'Fi'gure 1.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail section on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary section of Fi showing the arrangement for connecting the inner and outer sheets of the inner water leg to form passages throughthe leg for products of combustion. l
In the embodiment of the invention as hereinshqwnpthere ispr videqa base l-0- which may b'eot circular form andttrom this base rises a set otvertical" legs; l' l,:which; support a boiler bottornplate t2; the latterbeing secured: to the legs inany preferred-Qmanner, such as welding, bolting or the like, The plate i2 is circular in form; and has an upstanding peripheral flange (3, the purpose of which will be presently understood. A The boiler proper includes an outer sheet M of; cylindrical form, and to the upper edge of the sheet H is; welded or otherwise secured.- a top sheet 1'5. ,The sheet I4 is H concentric to but spaced inwardly from the flange I3. Spaced inwardly from and concentricto'the sheet I4 is an outer fire boxsheet l6, which is provided with a series ofvertically spaced and inwardly projectihg corrugations I! extending circumferentially of, thesheet. The bottom edges of the-sheets l4 and Hi are curved toward each other so that they meet and these meeting edges are Welded togather; 'I-'hesheet [6 is of considerably less height than the sheet l4, and the space between these sheets forms an outer water leg I8. Weldedtothe upper edgeof the sheet [6' and extending inwardly therefrom is an annular crown sheet 19, Depending from the inner edge of the" crown sheet I9 is an inner fire box sheet 20,-which is of'lessheight than the sheet l6, and thus has-its bottom edge spaced above the plane of the bottom edge of sheet l6. Spaced inwardly from the sheet 20 and concentric therewith is anin'ner boiler sheet 21', which is provided. with vertically spaced corrugations 22 similar to the corrugations 11 The sheets 20 and 21- have their bottom edgesbentto meet, and these bottom edges are welded-together sothat the space between the sheets forms an inner water leg 23. The sheet I5 is provided with a centrally disposedopening 24 and the sheet 21 projects through-this opening and extends thereabove, the sheet [5- being welded at its opening to the sheet M; It will now be observed that the space between the sheets I 6 and 20 and below the sheet l9 forms an annular firebox. Arranged concentricallyof-the sheet 21: is a tube 25 of firebrick or other refractory material. The tube 25 is provided at its upper endwith a peripheral flange 26 whichengages on top of an annular fillenpiece 21*, closing the space between the upper parts of the tube 25 and sheet 2| and hiaving a peripheral flange 28 resting on the upper end of the sheet 21-. l Within the tube 25 is fitted a smoke pip 29 having a bead 30 adjacent itsupper end toengage on top of the upper end of the tube and thus prevent the smoke pipe from slipping down. Delivery pipes 3| lead upwardly from the top sheet l5 and return pipes 32 lead into the lower ends of the water leg l8. Suitable insulation 33 rests on the sheet I2 between the sheet l4 and flange l3 and extends upwardly to surround the sheet l4 and. over the top of the boiler to abut against the upwardly projecting portion of the sheet 2|. sheet 34 serves to protect the insulation and hold it in place. Tubular pasasges 35 for the gases of combustion lead across the upper part of the inner water leg to conduct the gases from the fire box to the annular downcomer smoke flue 36;
smoke vent for attachment of the usual -smoke" pipe leading to a building chimney. The wall 38 has a series of air vents 40 formed therein, and below the smoke vent,- there is located a baflie 4| supported from the wall 38 by brackets 42.
Fixed to the inner face of the sheet 2!"at.the
lower part thereof are downwardly extending bolts 43 which pass through suitable openings adjacent the periphery of a damper .plate 44 which is supported on the bolts by nuts 45. The
Extending inwardly from the legs H are removable pins or brackets 5|, which support a gas ring 52, Burner tubes 53 of; the general type shown in my prior patent, No. 2,170,139 extend up through the plate l2 and open toward the outer Water leg. The ring 52 is supplied with a mixture of gas and air through a supply pipe 54 having at its free end a mixer 55 ineluding a chamber 56 having one or more ports 51 for admission ,of air, theports being controlled by the usual sliding shutter 58. The mixer is provided with an internally threaded opening 59, into which is screwed one end of a T-fitting Bil, having the screwed-in end reduced and threaded so thatv a nozzle 6| having a screw kerf 62 or the like may be screwed therein and thus be interchangeable with like nozzles of different sizes. The opposite end of the T is normally closed by a pipe plug 63. The inlet 64 has connected thereto a gas line 65 interposed in Which is a thermostatic control valve 66 of standard construction, and a standard cut-off valve mechanism 61 operating to shut ofi all gas supply if the gas from the burner pipes fails to light from any reason such as blowing out of the pilot light supplied through the branch pipe 68. I y
'It will now be seen that upon the gas from the A wrapper burner pipes 53 being lit, the gases of combus tion follow the course of the arrows, air being mixed with the gas at the main mixer 55, and auxiliary air being also admitted at the lower damper plate opening. The flow of the gases of combustion may take place solely through the passages across the inner water leg or may flow both through passages and through the space between the upper damper plate and the lower end of the inner water leg. The gases of combustion flow slowly over the boiler surfaces and gives up heat to the water covering the crown sheet and that in the water leg.
It will be noted from Figure 5 that the smoke passages are formed by dieing and punching thesheets 20 and 2|. so that the died-out portion of sheet 2| is of conical form having a rolled or beaded edge 69, while the died-out portion 10 of all sheet 25 engages beading and is welded to said bead.
What is claimed is:
1. A vertical cylindrical boiler including an outer sheet, a fire box sheet concentric to and spaced from the outer sheet, the fire box sheet and outer sheet being connected at their bottom edges to provide an outer annular water leg, a second fire box sheet spaced inwardly from the first firebox sheet and concentric therewith, an annular crown sheet connecting the upper edges of the fire box sheets, a smoke flue sheet spaced within and concentric to the second fire box sheet, said flue sheet and second fire box sheet being connected at their bottom edges to each other toprovide an annular inner water leg, tubular members intersecting the upper part of the inner water leg and affording communication between the fire box and smoke flue, flow pipes connecting the lowerparts of said water legs, a smoke pipe leading centrally down the smoke flue, means closing the space between the smoke pipe and the smoke flue sheet, a plate closing the lower end of said smoke flue, a fire clay tube surrounding the upper part of the smoke pipe, a closure plate at the lower end of the outer water leg and having a centrally disposed air inlet, and a damper controlling said inlet.
