Description
L. W. FREDERICK. Whifflet-ree-(Hip. No 225,924 Patented Mar. 30, 1880.
WITNESSES.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEVI W. FREDERICK, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
WH l FFLETREE-CLI P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,924, dated March 30, 1880.
Application filed August 16, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEVI W. FREDERICK, of the city of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whiffletree- Clips, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts.
Figure 1 is a top or plan view of a whiffletree provided with clips embodying my invention, one of which is provided with a single set of projections and the other with a double set. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the whiffletree, upon which is a clip provided with a double set of projections, all of which are unbent, or
in the shape in which they are made. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the whiffletree, upon which is a clip provided with only a single set of projections, which are bent or clinched down as when the device is ready for use.
In said drawings, the portions marked A represent the clip, which incloses the end of the whiffletree, and is provided with either or both the sets of projections to a and a? a B, the hook attached to said clip, to which the tug or trace is attached; 0, the bolt which passes through the clip and whiffletree, connecting them together; and D, the whiffletree.
The object of my invention is to produce a whiffletree-clip which shall provide within itself all the means required to permanently and rigidly attach it to the whiffletree, except a single bolt, and also to clamp the end of said whiffletree and prevent it from splitting, thus dispensing with all ferrules, rivets, studs,
or other various devices which have heretofore been used for these purposes.
I prefer to make my clip of malleable iron, but may use any metal possessing the necessary strength and ductility.
In applying my clip it is placed upon the end of the whiffletree and the bolt 0 inserted. The projections a a a (L or so many of them as may be used, are then bent down to tightly clamp the whiffletree end. These prevent the said end from splitting and hold the clip rigidly in position, and thus the object of my invention is accomplished.
Where but one set of the projections is used, which I find generally to be sufficient, I prefer those marked a a.
Having thus fully describedmy said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with a whiffletree, D, a clip, A, which passes around the end of said whifflet-ree in the manner shown, said whiflletree and said clip having a bolt, O,passingtransversely through and holding them together, and said clip having projections, as shown, to be bent down over the end of the whiffletree, all arranged and operating substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purposes herein specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 12th day of August, A. D, 1879.
LEVI W.' FREDERICK.
In presence of C. BRADFORD, H. B. GHJLETT.
