Description

S. M. RHOADS. Thin-Coupling.
No. 225,867. Patented Mar. 23, I880.
. ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL M. RHOADS, OF JEFFERSONVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
THILL-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,867, dated March 23, 1880.
Application filed January 30, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. RHOADS, of Jeffersonville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Shaft or Pole Oouplin g, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is a sectional side elevation with the shaft attached. Fig. 2 is a sectional front elevation of the coupling on line as .r, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view, showing the method of securing the thumb-screw strap to the under side of the shaft or pole. Fig. 4 is a plan of the cover of the coupling. Fig. 5 is a perspective of the lower part of the coupling.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and durable shaft or pole coupling for vehicles.
The invention consists in combining with the cushion of a chill-coupling a box having a recess and back piece, a separate axle-clip, a screw thre aded cap having ears that clasp the box, cut-away ears, and nut, as hereinafter fully described.
In the drawings, A represents the box or lower part of the coupling, held to the axle B by the clip 0, and projecting in front of the said axle B, as shown. The two sides of the box A have semicircular notches a a made in their upper edges, in which notches rests the bolt I), that passes through the eye I) of the shaft or pole E. In the front of the box A is formed a rectangular socket or depression, 0, which supports the rear end of the shaft or pole E and prevents the lateral movement thereof. The cap or cover F of the box has a flat top, cut away so as to form rearward-projecting ears (I d, which clasp both sides of the upward-extending back piecefof the box; and this cover or cap F has also two forward-projecting ears, 9 g, which assist in preventing I the lateral movement of the shaft or pole of the vehicle, and these ears 9 g are cut away on the under side, as shown at s, so that the said cover or top F may fit more closely and securely in its seat on the box A.
Projecting downward at right angles from the cover F is its shank G, having vertical sides and back and a curved or recessed front, as shown at h, Fig. 1. This shank G is prolonged into a screw, which extends down through a hole, m, in the bottom of the box A, and on the end of this screw is turned the thumb-nut H, to hold the said cover F in place. andtop of the cover F is placed an elastic buifer or cushion, I, which presses upon the eye I) of the shaft or pole E when the said cover F is screwed down into place. Attached to this thumb-nut H, and made a part of it, is the loop at, and the said thumbnut H is prevented from accidentally turning, and thus becoming loose, by the strap K, whose one end is secured in the loop it, while the other end of said strap K is buttoned 011 the button 0 and passed through theloop p of the plate L, which is fastened on the under side of the shaft or pole E.
It will be seen that by simply unscrewing the thumb-nut H the cover F may be readily lifted and the shaft or pole with its bolt be removed from the box; and it is obvious, also, that a shaft or pole may be held firmly in position by this coupling, and without rattlin g, though having sufficient play, when the elastic-lined cover is drawn tightly down upon it.
Having thus described my intention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a thill'coupling, the combination, with Within the recess formed by the shank the cushion I, of the box having rectangular recess 0 and back piece, f, of the separate axleclip, the screw-shanked cap F G, having cars at g, and the not H, the ears 9 being cut away ate, as shown and described.
SAMUEL MARKLEY RHOADS.
