INVENTOR. W-
Patented Oct. 7, 1941 nanasr roam AND naassrnan Stella De Jorio, La Canada, Calif. Application Mano, 1936, Serial No. 80,799 3 Claims. (Cl. 128-282) This invention relates to the art of a sanitary pads or dressings and has ;to do more particularly with a sanitary absorbent breast form, to be used in conjunction with an impervious brassire.
An object of the present invention is to supplement a subnormal female breast after a breast amputation with an inexpensive sterile absorbent breast form. This is accomplished by providing a bustform composed of alternate layers of sterilized materials, such as cotton and cellulose fibers covered with a gauze or cloth sheath, whereby discharges from the breast wound are conveyed to the body of the bust form by means of the capillary action of cellulose fibers.
Another object of the invention is to protect the clothes of a nursing mother from overflowing milk ducts in the breast. and at the same time allow such mother to easily gain access to the breast.
This is accomplished by providing a soft, nonsists of a harness 2 shaped to fit a female figure.
A pair of supporting shoulder straps 3 and 3' are adjustably fastened by means of a conventional button and buttonhole arrangement 4, conveniently located adjacent the shoulder of a wearer. Adjustable belts and 5' are continuations of the straps 3 and 3', and secure the base of the brasslre firmly around the torso of the wearer. The brassire 2 is so constructed that irritating concave breast form, composed of sterilized cotton and cellulose fiber covered with a sheath of sterile gauge or the'like, and a protective brassire made of a soft impervious material such as softex. A trough in the brassire is adapted to receive asupporting arm, integral with the pad, and thereby maintain such pad and its complementary breast in relative proximity to each other. An aperture is provided in the brassiere adjacent each breast pad and is opened or closed by means of a standard slide fastener. In this way a wet pad may be removed with comparative ease.
Many other advantages will be apparent from the following detailed description when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a rear elevation of the brassire of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation showing the brassire and a complementary sanitary absorbent breast Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing a preferred form of concave absorbent breast pad.
Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the brassire of this invention in place on a female figure.
Fig. 5 is a back elevation of the brassire or harness of the invention showing the construction thereof. I
Fig. 6 is a front elevation of a female figure with the absorbent breast form in place.
Fig. 7 is a side elevation partly in cross section of an absorbent breast form for use with an amputated breast.
Referring now to Fig. 1, the brassiere I conthe belts 5 and 5 are adapted to cross at the back of the wearer as shown in Fig. 5. Belt 5 passes through an aperture 46 at the side of the brassiere 2 and is adiustably fastened at the front of the wearer in a conventional manner. Thus by adjusting the belts 5 and 5' an upward pressure is exerted upon breast pockets 36 and 31, thereby elevating the breasts of a wearer and assisting the breast muscles in holding the breasts in a proper position.
A trough or pocket 6 is located at the base of the harness 2 and the front of the harness 2 is arranged in the form of two breast pockets 36 and 31. Each breast pad such as 1. An extended tongue 8 on the pad I is adapted to be received in the reservoir in the bottom of the trough 6, thus providing a firm support for pad 7 and preventing it from slipping out of place. This reservoir is formed by stitching, as indicated in Figure 3 and referred to by numeral 6, this separating the reservoir from the rest of the trough. A fiap 9 covers an aperture ID in the breast pocket 36 of the brassiere or harness 2 and provides a bodyguard for a conventional slide fastener H, which serves to open and close aperture I 0 at will. The same arrangement is used for each breast as is shown in Fig. 4, wherein the second slide fastener I2 is used to close aperture 38 (similar to aperture I 0) in the breast pocket 31.
Different types of sanitary breast pads are designed to be used in conjunction with this brassire, varied in shape according to the breast condition that is to be corrected. Thus, where the device is being used by a nursing mother to protect her clothes from excess flow from her milk ducts, a pad such as 1, shown in Fig. 3, is used wherein the pad 1 consists of a series of alternate layers of cellulose fiber and absorbent cotton |ll5-l6-l1 pressed into 'a substantially concave cone shape to fit an enlarged breast. Pad I is covered with a notched gauze or cheese cloth sheath l8, stitched to pad I, to form a tight fitting cover. The lower side IQ of pad i is thicker than the upper side 26 in order to absorb pocket is adapted to receive a the wearer.
excess milk flowing downward toward the trough 8, as will be readily understood.
In order to provide a greater amount of absorbent material where needed and also to ail'ord a firm support for the pad, an extension or pendant arm 8 is attached to the main body of pad 1 and is adapted to rest upon the bottom of the trough 6 and prevent pad I from slipping when it is in position. It will be seen that if pad 1 and extension 8 become saturated any excess milk will be caught in the impervious trough 8, where it will not be able to soil the wearer's clothing.
In the case of a wearer suffering from a diseased condition of the breast and where there has been an amputation oi. the breast or breasts and discharges are likely to occur, a pad such as 22 Fig. 7 is used. This pad 22 is not only used to absorb discharges but also supplements a human figure such as 23, and preserves its contours as is shown in Fig. 6. Pad 22 consists of a series of layers of absorbent cotton 2l--26283l and 32, and alternate layers of cellulose fiber 25 2|29 and 30 compressed into the shape of a human breast.
It must be understood that the pads are made invarious standard sizes to approximate the, normal measurements of a wearer.
A sheet wadding covering 39 is used to cover pad 22 andserves as a framework upon which the alternate layers of absorbent material are 1 stitched. A sterilized gauge covering 33 is suit- It will be seen that pad 22 may be inserted and removed at will through apertures I and 38, and thus provide an easy method of keeping a sanitary dressing near a dangerous breast condition where sterile dressings are absolutely necessary.
It is to be understood that many diflerent combinations of diflerent sanitary materials may be used to form the pads without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a garment, a breast receiving member and a trough, said trough adapted to be located below and in peripheral relation thereto, a pad comprising a plurality of alternate layers of absorbent and impervious material shaped to resemble an entire human breast, a reservoir distinctly formed in said trough below the periphery or said breast receiving member, an arm oi! absorbent material formed integral with said pad extending downwardly and adapted tobe received in said reservoir, an aperture located in front and on each side of said garment, means for opening and closing said apertures, said means positioned in an are over the center of the pad. 7 r
2. In a garment, a breast receiving member and a trough, said trough adapted to be located below and in peripheral relation thereto, a pad shaped to resemble an entireihumanbreast, a reservoir distinctly formed adjacent'said trough below the periphery of said breast receiving member, an arm extending downwardly from said pad and adapted to be received in saidreservoir to receive the moisture from said pad.
, 3. In a garment of the class described having I and over said pads. v
