WARDROBE-BED.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,765, dated March 23, 1880.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, NETTA G. Roon, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Wardrobe-Beds, of which the following is a specification.

It consists in arranging and combining a hinged bed with the partition or wall of a building having a recess to receive it, and operating mechanism to facilitate the manipulation of the bed, as hereinafter fully set forth.

Figure 1 of my drawings is a plan view, showing the partition-wall of a building having beds and bureauclosets adapted for use in two separate rooms. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the partition and a side elevation of a bed combined therewith and adapted to be inclosed therein when not in use. Fig. 3 is a front view of the partition when the bed is concealed and the toilet-closet open. Jointly considered, these figures illustrate the construction, application, and operation of my complete invention.

a a a in Fig. 1 represent a series of posts, usually called studding, fixed to the floor and ceiling of a building to form the skeletonbase of a partition-wall. They are set in pairs and at suitable distances apart to form a series of recesses adapted to be utilized for folding in beds and placing in toilet articles from opposite sides of the partition and from separate apartments.

b is a recess opening into room No. 1. b is a corresponding recess, that is accessible from room No. 2 only. Two recesses adapted for storing in beds are thus constructed in one partition, to communicate with two separate rooms.

0 is a recess opening into room No. 1, and designed to be fitted with shelves and drawers adapted for the reception of toilet articles, such as a ewer and basin and other movable things required in abed-chamber. c is a corresponding toilet-bureau recess, opening into room No. 2. Two bureau-closets are thus also formed in the same partition, to communicate with two distinct bed-chambers, to be used in connection with the two distinct beds combined with the independent bed-recesses b and b.

din Fig. 2 represents the side board of a bed, resting at its head end upon a platform, 0, and at the foot end upon a hinged support, 9.

f represents a drawer under the platform 0.

h is a rod or other suitable pivoting device, that connects the head end of the bed with the sides of the recess 1) in such a manner as to hinge the bed and allow it to be revolved upward, as required, to fold it into the recess and to form part of the partition when the bed is not in use.

i represents a pulley fixed against the wall of the recess near the head end of the bed, to direct the cord k, that is attached to the bed (I and suspends a weight, I, at its free end, which passes downward through an opening in the floor.

m represents a removable and flexible bedbottom, fixed to the wall of the recess 1) in an elevated position relative to the head of the bed (1 by means of a series of hooks, a, or in any suitable way that will support the bedbottom and bed-clothing and the weight of the person or persons occupying the bed, and that will allow the bed-bottom to be readily attached and detached at pleasure.

In buildings that are supplied with water through pipes a wash-bowl may be permanently fixed in the toilet-bureau recess and the supply and wash pipes passed to and from it through an opening in the floor, as indi- 8o cated in Fig. 3.

In the practical use and operation of my invention it requires the under side of the bed to be closed and finished, so that when the bed is folded into the recess in the partition it will present an artistic imitation of a paneled space or a paneled door or double closet-doors.

The hinged foot-piece g at the foot end of the bed may be shaped to represent an ornamental cap-facing of a door or the cornice of acnpboard or closet. Moldings on the edge of the bed-bottom may overlap the edges of the partition-recess, to aid in disguising the bed and in keeping dust and other impurities from entering the bed and its recess when concealed and not in use.

In turning the bed from a horizontal position, as required for use, to a vertical position, as required to be out of the way and concealed and protected in the partition, the weights l mo on the cords 70, attached to the head end of the bed, Will balance the weight of the bed, and consequently only sufficient force needs to be applied to the foot end of the bed to disturb the balance and to cause the bed to turn up into the recess. A reverse movement of the applied-force is all that is required to bring the bed down again into a horizontal position to be ready for use. In thus folding the bed up and down it is not necessary to remove any bed-clothing when the recess is deep enough to retain the bed and bed-clothing, as contemplated by my invention.

The size of my beds and the depth of the recesses in the partition may vary as desired, and the finish of the partition, beds, and toilet-bureaus may also vary to suit the fancy, so that various plain and ornamental styles may be used to suitthe different classes of so ciety that may want to avail themselves of the advantages of my invention in their homes.

Openings may be formed in the bed-recesses to communicate with the hollow Wall, to provide ventilation when desired, and the recesses may be lined with Wood, plaster, metal, paper. or any suitable material that can be made air-tight and vermin-proof.

I claim The partition or Wall of a building having a bed-recess, b, one or more pulleys, 'i, and one or more bed-bottom tastenings, n, fixed in the recess, a platform, 0, adapted to support one end of a bed, the hinged and adjustable bed (I, having a hinged support, g, at its free end, and cord and weight 70 Z atits hinged end,and the removable bed-bottom m, arranged and combined substantially as shown and described, to be operated in the manner set forth, for the purposes specified.
