On these drawings, L indicates a locomotive having a boiler I mounted above the frame II. The boiler I0 comprises a firebox I2 having a backwall I3 provided with a firing opening I4 above the grates I5 and also above the cab deck of the locomotive L is a tender T connected to the former by the buiier B and including an underframe I1 above which is supported the tank I8. The tank I 8 is provided with a fuel bin I9 above the tender deck 20.
Within the rebox I2 and at its lower portion is` a center grate bearer bar 2I which extends longitudinally of the rebox along its medial plane. Along a side wall 22, 23, the iirebox I 2 carries a side bearer bar 24, respectively. Preferably, the protective grate sections 39, 49 and the ring-like member 4I are supported upon a part of the locomotive firebox. For this purpose, an H- haped support member 9 (Fig. 4) is provided and it includes a pair of parallel bars 43, 44 and a cross bar 45. At each end of the parallel bars 43, 44 is an outwardly extending pintle 43 and it fits into an appropriate rec-ess 21 of the center bar 2| and side bar 24. The upper surface of the support member 9 is flush with the upper surface of the firebox grates I5 when said support member 9 is in operative position. The cross bar 45, together with the parallel bars 43,
44, defines a pair of indentations 49, 50 and also 1 has formed therein a pair of recesses 5l into which grate supporting pintles are fitted, as will presently appear. In assembling, 9 is introduced into the lirebox l2 through the firing opening I4 by first inserting one end of a parallel bar 43, 44 into said firing opening and then threading this support member through. This has been satisfactorily demonstrated with firing openings of existing form. Usually, when `the support member 9 is inserted into the rebox l2, the vertical conduit 31 is not yet in position and it is thus a very easy matter to place the support member 9 so that each of the four pintles 46 fits into an appropriate recess 21 of the center and side bearer bars 2l and 24. With the support member 9 in position, short grate sections 60 are fitted over the indentation 49.` Each short grate section 60 has a p tle 6l on its outer end for fitting into an appropriate recess 21 and 5I of the side bearer bar 24 and cross bar 45, respectively.
After assembly of the rebox grates, the vertical conduit 31 is inserted through the indentation 50 in operative position overthe elbow 391. The vertical conduit 31 passes freely through the indentation 50 and the space is closed by the lower protective grate section 39, the latter resting upon the center bearer bar 2| and the bars 43, 44 and 45 of the support member 9. Above the lower protective grate section 39, the upper section 49 and ring-like member 4l are placed in proper sequence.
Since the vertical conduit 31 enters the firebox l2 at one side of its longitudinal medial plane, the fuel distributing head 38 is arranged so as to be at one ,side of the conduit 31. The jet opening 92 of said distributor head 38 may the H-shaped support member also be directed in a manner best calculated to spread the fuel evenly over the rebed.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that a stoker of the underfeed type has been provided which feeds through the rebox grate at one side of the longitudinal plane thereof and in this manner obviates the necessity for providing a new center bearer bar of the wish bone type.
I claim:
1. In a rebox, side grate bearer bars and a center grate bearer bar extending straight the full length of said flrebox, grates supported by said bearer bars, a removable support member carried by said center bearer bar and a side bearer bar, a Stoker for feeding fuel into said rebox comprising a fuel delivery conduit passing through said support member, said fuel delivery conduit being disposed between the center bearer bar and a side bearer bar, and grates along one side of said fuel delivery conduit supported by such side bearer bar and said support member.
2. In a rebox, side grate bearerfbars and a center grate bearer bar extending straight the full length of said flrebox, grates supportedby said bearer bars, a removable support member carried by said center bearer bar and a side bearer bar, a stoker for feeding fuel into saidV rebox comprising a fuel delivery, conduit passing through said support member, said fuel delivery conduit being disposed between the center bearer bar and a side bearer bar, grates along one side of said fuel delivery -conduit supported by such side bearer bar and said support member, and a protective grate embracing said fuel delivery COlidu'lt and being mounted upon said support member.
3. In a rebox, side grate bearer bars and a center grate bearer bar extending straight the full length of said rebox, grates supported by said bearer bars, a stoker for feeding fuel .into said flrebox comprising a fuel delivery conduit extending upwardly through the plane of said grates between said center bearer bar and one'of said side bearer bars, a removable support member vdisposed between said conduit and said'last named side bearer bar and adjacent said conduit, said support member being carried by said center bearer bar and said side bearer bar, and grates between said conduit and said last named side bearer bar supported by said side bearer bar and said support member.
