Claims.
This invention relates to stokers and more particularly to locomotive stokers of the type that convey fuel from a source of supply, as from the tender, to the firebox through a firing opening in the locomotive boiler backhead, from which point the fuel is scattered over the fire by a pressure fluid blast.
It is an object of the invention to provide a stoker of the type described with efiicient distributing. means located in the firing opening and arranged to permit convenient manual delivery of fuel to the firebox and free access for entry thereto through the firing opening.
A more specific object is to provide, in a stoker which feeds fuel to one side of the firing opening only, a distributing means comprising a table from which fuel is projected over the firebed, the table occupying substantially theentire width of the firing opening and having a movable portion adapted to provide an unobstructed aperture along the opposite side of the firing opening whenever'access into the firebox is desired.
It is also an object of this invention to hinge the movable portion of such table to the main portion thereof by linkage which normally forms 7 a firm support for the movable portion of the table.
Other objects and their attendant advantages will become apparent as the following descrip-' tion of the invention is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a sectional plan view through the portion of the locomotive boiler backhead that includes the firing opening with a firedoor applied thereto, a portion of the firedoor being broken away showing a portion of the stoker in plan view; v

With reference first to the preferred embodi' ment of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 to 3, inclusive, A indicates a locomotive having. a boiler 10 provided with a firebox H which extends forwardly from the hollow backwall I2.

adapted for the supply of fuel therethrough by power or manual means. The firing opening I3 is of sufficient size so that a stoker S may deliver fuel through the side R ofv such opening while the side L is arranged to permit feeding of fuel.

The stoker S includes a riser conduit 20 which slopes upwardly and forwardly to; the firing opening l3 and houses a conveyor screw 2| for urging fuel through said riser conduit 20 and into the zone of action of a distributor D. At
its forward end the riser conduit 20 discharges into the upper side R of the firing opening l3.
The distributor D includes a. jet member 22- which forms the forward end of the riser conduit 20 and is fastened to the main section of blasts of pressure flui d across a table 28 extend ing in a forward direction from a point below the level of the jet apertures 21. Y
It is well known that a helicoid screw, such as that designated by the reference numeral 2| in the drawings, will deliver more coal to one side of its axis than to the other. The screw 2|, having flights which are wound to advance fuel when rotated in a clockwise direction. as viewed in the direction of flow, delivers'most of its charge to the left side of its axis. Referring particularly to Figure 1, it will be observed that the screw 2| delivers most. of its charge toward the side of the firebox marked L. Thus, the greater chargeof fuel delivered toward the side L will compensate for offsetting the riser .conduit 20 and jet member 22 toward the side R and even distribution of fuel over the firebed is attained.
However,.since the greater charge of fuel is delivered to the left side of the distributor table 28, the latter includes a portion 29 which extends laterally from the main portion 30 to occupy space at the side L of the firing opening I3, which is reserved for gaining access into the firebox I Accordingly, the portion 29 of'the distributor table 28is so arranged with the main portion 30 thereof that it may be, readily removed ing l3. i
On its underside, the portion 29 is provided with a pair of spaced ears 3|, 32, each of which extends beneath the main portion 30 of the table 28 so as to straddle a lug 33 formed with the main portion 30. A pin 34 is passed through the ears 3|, 32 and the lug 33, forming a hinge connection between the portions 29 and 30 of the table 28. In order to support the portion 29 in its operative position an articulated link 35 is utilized and it consists of a lower link section 36 and an upper link section 31 connected by a pin 38. upper link section 31 is connected at 39 to a lug 40 which depends from the underside of the table portion 30, while the lower link section 36 is connected by a pin 4! to a bracket 42 secured to a wall 33 depending from the underside of the riser conduit Zii. Adjacent the pin 38, the upper link section 31 is provided with a stopelement 44 which engages the lower link section 36 in order to prevent downward movement of the articulated link35. In normal position, the link sections 36 and 37 make an obtuse angle of less.
than 180 with each other on that side of the articulated link 35 which carries the stop element M. This construction is desirable in order to prevent accidental displacement of the link 35 from sudden shocks of the locomotive while in operation.
Whenever access to the interior of the firebox is desired, the firedoor F is thrown open and the operator lifts the articulated link 35. upwardly at the. joint formed by the pin 33 and stop element 4 This serves to break this joint and permits the link sections 36, 31. and table portion 29 to assume the positions. indicated by the dot and dash lines in Figure 3. When these parts are in this position. there is formed an unobstructed aperture along the entire side L of the firing opening 43 which is of ample size to permit free access into the firebox H.
In the modification illustrated in Figure 4, the table portion 2% is provided with an elongated lug 5E3 apertured to receive one end of a long pin 5! for maintaining the table portion in its operative relation. The pin 5| passes through a bearing 52 formed in a wall 53 of the riser conduit 54 and is preferably sloped downwardly to prevent its casual displacement. On its outward end, the pin 5! has an enlarged head 55 which limits forward movement thereof. The head 55'may carry a bail 55 for manual Withdrawal of the pin 5! from engagement with the lug 58 whereby the table portion 29 will swing out of the way in the firing opening I3.
To those familiar with the art, it will be apparent that an efficient distributor has been provided for a stoker of the type described, the distributor being arranged to permit unobstructed access into the firebox. Certain features of this invention, it will be understood, are of utility in stokers of other types.
I claim:
1. In a furnace having a wall with a firing opening therein and a stoker for feeding fuel to said furnace through one lateral side of said firing opening only, said stoker comprising a conduit in communication with said furnace and a distributor positioned at said firing opening for receiving fuel from said conduit, said distributor including a table extending across the major portion of said firing opening at each side of the longitudinal vertical medial plane thereof and arranged to support fuel discharged by said conduit. and a jet member at one lateral side only The of said firing opening for projecting forwardly the fuel supported upon said table, said table including a portion occupying space within one lateral side of said firing opening approximately coextensive with said jet member, and a portion, in operative position, occupying space within the opposite lateral side of said firing opening, said last named portion being movable from its operative position to provide an unobstructed space in said last named lateral side of the firing opening.
2. In a furnace having a wall with a firing opening therein and a stoker for feeding fuel to said furnace through one lateral side of said firing opening only, said stoker comprising a conduit in communication with said furnace and a distributor positioned at said firing opening for receiving fuel from said conduit, said distributor including a table extending across the major portion of said firing opening at each side of the longitudinal vertical medial plane thereof and arranged to support fuel discharged by said conduit, and a jet member at one lateral side only of said firing opening for projectingforwardly the fuel supported upon said table, said table including a portion occupying space within one lateral side of said firing opening approximately coextensive withsaid jet member, and a portion, in operative position, occupying space Within the opposite lateral side of'said firing opening, said last named portion being hinged to said first named portion and being movable from its 010- erative position to provide an unobstructed space in said last named lateral side of the firing opening, and means for supporting said last named portion in an operative position.
3. In a furnace having a wall with a firing opening therein and a stoker for feeding fuel to said furnace through one lateral side of said firing opening only, said stoker comprising a conduit in communication with said furnace and a distributor positioned at said firing opening for receiving fuel from said conduit, said distributor including a table extending across the major portion of said firing opening at each side of the longitudinal vertical medial plane thereof and arranged to support fuel discharged by said conduit, and a jet member at one lateral side only of said firing opening for projecting forwardly the fuel supported upon said table, said table including a portion occupying space along one lateral side of said firing opening approximately coextensive with said jet member, and a portion, in operative position, occupying space along the opposite lateral side of said firing opening, said last named portion being hinged to said first named portion, and means for supporting said last named portion in an operative position, said means including an articulated link being yieldable between its ends in one direction only.
4. In a furnace having a wall with a firing opening therein and a stoker for feeding-fuel to said furnace through one lateral side of said firing opening only, said stoker comprising a conduit in cornmunication'with said furnace and a distributor positioned at said' firing opening for receiving fuel from said conduit, said distributor including a table extending across the major portion'of said firing opening at each side of the longitudinal vertical medial plane thereof and arranged to support fuel discharged by said conduit, and a jet member at one lateral side only of said firing opening for projecting forwardly the fuelisupported upon said table, said table includ- 76.

In a furnace having a wall with a firing opening therein and a stoker for feeding fuel to said furnace through one lateral side of said receiving fuel from said conduit, said distributor including a table extending across the major portion of said firing opening and arranged to support fuel discharged by said conduit, and a jet l member at one lateral side of said firing opening for projecting forwardly the fuel supported upon said table, said table including a portion occupying space along one lateral side of said firing opening approximately coextensive with said jet member, and a portion, in operative position, occupying space along the opposite lateral side of said firing opening, said last named portion being hinged to said first named portion, and means engaging said portion for supporting the latter tion.
