The invention relates to locomotives provided with mechanical stokers, its objects being to strengthen the locomotive, toprovide improved means for the introduction of the fuel by power and for convenience in hand iring, and to secure other objects which will be pointed out in connection with the description. j

The frames of the locomotive and tender are shown conventionally at 10 and 11. The backhead of the boiler of the locomotive is shown at 12; the firebox thereof at 13; the grates are indicated at 14; the cab firing floor or deck,at 15; and the tender deck at 16.
The walls of the boiler including its backhead which enclose the firebox, are, as usual, hollow and are bounded at the bottom by a foundation or mud ring 17. As usual, the foundation ring may be formed of a heavy casting or forging, and in carrying out the present invention, it is provided with an integral upstanding arch 18 which encloscs theI opening for the admission of fuel and to i which the inner and outer sheets 19. 20 of the backhead may be secured by usual means, Without deviating from the common form,

The space below the plate 21 and above the foundation ring is open for the accommodation of the stoker conduit and the admission of air for cooling the same. The opening in the backhead may be increased in the vertical dimension,without carryingit too high for convenient hand iring by off-setting the` foundation ring downwardly across its bottom as indicated at 24;, see Figures 3v and 4.
The rear portion of the fuel conduit may be of any preferred form, being shown as comprising a trough 25 located below the floor ofthe tender and receiving fuel from an aperture therein and being provided with a conveyor screw 26 and a suitable crushing device 23 cooperating therewith. Leading from the forward end of the trough 25 is a tubular conduit comprising a rearward section 27 universally jointed to the forward end of the trough 25 and the forward section 28 loosely telescopically fitting upon the rearward section and provided at its forward end with one element of a ball joint 29. The forward portion'of the conduit comprises two freely telescoping sections 30, 3 1, the formerI having at its rearward-end an element 32 of a ball joint which engages the element 29 and is seated upon and rigidly attached to a chair 33 carried by a frame member as 10 of the locomotive frame. The section 31 eX- tends through the lower portion of the a erture in the backhead which is enclose the arch 18 and within the firebox takes the form of an upwardly opening elbow or nozzle fi from which fuel is delivered into the fire- This elbow is seated upon and rigidly secured to a chair 35 attached to the portion 24 of the foundation ring which spans the lower end of the arch 18. A section 36- of the screw conveyor is located within the intermediate section of the conduit comprising the elements 27, 28, and a third section 37 is located within the- conduit sections 30, 31 terminating at the base of the elbow 34. The three conveyor screw sections are united by universal joints and the whole is driven from a suitable motor, conventionally shown at 38, by means of a shaft 319 connected with the rear end of the conveyor screw in any well known manner. lhe elbow 311i is protected. from the furnace heat by a gratedv shirt l0 eirtending `from its upper end to the fireboi; grate. 'lhe portion of the fuel conduit which is carried by the locomotive is preferably ll-shaped, being flattened at the top, for the purpose of checlring the tendency of the fuel to rotate and to yarn the elbow.

Each of the pipes 42 is preferably provided. with an individual controlling valve as indicated at l5 whereby the trimming of the fire may be facilitated by cutting of' the pipes leading to the box 4l which scatter the fuel over portions of the grate which may have been overfed with fuel.
r.lhe described arrangement for the admission of fuel through a common opening in the baclrhead facilitates the attachment of the steam pipes associated with the fuel distributor without requiring them to be extended downwardly under the foundation ring in accordance with the present practice in connection with stolters of the scatter feed type.
@ne of the serious dimculties encountered in mechanically tiring a locomotive through itsbaclrhead is due to the expansion of the boiler under the influence of the furnace heat, this expansion moving the baclrhead backwardly a considerable distance, putting the Stoker conduit under severe strain and sometimes causing its fracture or distortion. This diculty is overcome in the construction above described by forming the portion of the conduit which is carried by the locomotive in two freely telescoping sections, each being rigidly and independently secured to the locomotive.
'lhe inverntionI is applicable both to new and old locomotives, the latter being easily remodeled for its incorporation. lin old locomotives to which the invention is applied, it may sometimes be found desirable to put in an entirely new foundation. ring or the arch t8 may be welded on to the existing foundation ring.
lthile the construction shown and described is highly efficient and desirable, the invention may be differently embodied within its scope as dened by the appended claims.

In combination, a boiler including a ireboXV having hollow walls, a foundation ring bounding the lower margins of said walls, the backwall of said irebox having a l5 fuel admission opening extending upwardly from its lower margin, a firing floor extending rearwardly from the frebox backwall and disposed in a horizontal plane intermediate the lower margin of'said backwall and the upper margin of 'the opening therein whereby fuel may be introduced manually above said floor and mechanically from below said floor through such admission opening, and an upstanding extension of said ring bounding said admission opening above and below said floor.
