Description

. A. B. PROUTY.. Adjustable-Nozzle for Hose.
No. 225,721. Patented Mar. 23, 1880.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADJUSTABLE NOZZLE FOR HOSE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,721, dated March 23, 1880.
Application filed September 6. 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS B. PROUTY, of Worcester, in the county of WVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Nozzles for Hose; and I declare the following to be a description of my said invention sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom iianying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved adjustable nozzle. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same at a right angle to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a central section at line X X, Fig. 1; and Fig. at is an end view, showing the face of the orifice-block.
My invention consists in the adjustable discharge-nozzle, constructed substantially as described, with a sliding orifice-block for spray and full streams, adapted to be held in position by pressure against its packing when screwed onto the hose-pipe, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
The construction of my improved nozzle is as follows: A thimble or ring head, M, screwthreaded on its interior, is fitted to screw onto the threaded end of the hose-pipe L, and in the upper part of said ringhead M, across its central opening, is fitted a laterally-sliding block, N, in which the various forms of orifices are constructed.
The orifice-block N projects from the face of the head M, and is held thereto by flanges n working in undercut or equivalent grooves m on the head, as indicated, while a pin or stop, 1), arranged to engage the shoulders or projections 8, limits the movement of the block N and prevents it from falling from the groove of the head M;
A packing-ring, P, of leather or other suitable material, is arranged within the head M, occupying a position directly between the end of the hose-pipe L and the under surface of the orifice-block N, so that when the head' ring M is screwed down onto the pipe L the packing-ring P is pressed against the block N with sufiicient force to retain said block N at any adjusted position, at the same time forming a water-tight joint between the parts. Adjustment of the nozzle is effected by slightly unscrewing the head and then sliding the block N to the desired position, and then again screwing the head down, the operation being quickly and conveniently performed. The flat form of the block N serves as a thumb-piece, to facilitate screwing the head M on and off from the pipe L, and for the ready adjustment of nozzle, as desired.
The orifice-block N may be made of any desired length and be provided with a greater or less number of orifices. In the present instance it is fitted with a full-stream opening, q. and a spray-orifice, 1', the latter consisting of two small openings directed toward each other, as indicated, to cause the streams of water projected therefrom to impinge against each other and break into a spray. Acoarser spray or sprinkling stream may be obtained by adjusting the block N, so that a portion of the water will pass out at each of the openin gs q r. This nozzle made with the two forms nary uses in sprinkling lawns and gardens, washing windows and carriages, and for similar domestic purposes; but the size of the nozzle and form of the orifices may be varied to suit the requirements of the service for which it is designed to be used.
What I claim as of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- ing orifice-block having a series of dischargeopenlngs, and arranged to be retained in adjusted position by pressure against its packing-ring when the nozzle is screwed onto the end of the hose-pipe, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
2. The adjustable hose-nozzle consisting of a block provided with a series of dischargeorifices, and adapted, by suitable interlocking flanges and grooves to be inovably retained across the face of a screw-threaded ring or thimble fitted onto the end of the hose-pipe in such manner that said block will be retained of orifices q r, as shown, is adapted for ordi- 1. A nozzle for hose, provided with a slidat adjusted position, by pressure against the ring M, having grooves m and projections or hose-pipe end or end packing when the thilnble lugs s, and the fiat-sided orifice-block N, With is screwed down, as hereinbefore set forth. flanges n and stop-pin p, for the purposes set 3. In combination, substantially as hereinforth. I 5 before described, the hose-pipe L, having ex- Witness my hand this 1st day of September,
