its construction and operation, referring to the UNITED TATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. WARREN, OF TAMA CITY, IOWA.
SULKY- PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,668, dated March 16, 1880.
Application filed December 18, 1879.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. WARREN, of Tama Oity, in the county of Tama, and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Im provementsin Sulky-Plows and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The .nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a sulkyplow, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a rear elevation of my sulkyplow. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the wheelslides.
A represents the axle, to which the tongue B is rmly secured. At each end of the axle A is a vertical downwardly-projecting standard, C, to receive a slide, D, which has side grooves, a a, to grasp flanges on the standard, and also a central upwardly-projecting rackbar, b, which lies in a groove in the standard. The slide D is further provided with a spindle, e, on which the wheel E is placed.
F is a bail, having its side arms pivoted in the lower ends ofthe standards C, and extendin grearward, for supporting one or more plows. G is a rigid bail, secured to the standards and to the tongue. One of the side arms of the bail F has a projection, H, extending forward atan angle, and its forward end then connected by braces I I with the bail. Between the forward ends of these braces is mounted a roller, el, on which operates acamlever, J, pivoted between ears on the front of the axle, for raising and lowering the bail.
One or more rollers or slides may be used in connection with the earn -lever and the parts so arranged that the relative position or situation of power, resistance, or fulcrum is changed from a given point or points or radius in use.
The braces I answer the double purpose of holding the roller and strengthening the bail.
The two rack-bars b b of the wheel-slides D D are operated by segmental racks K K, pivoted in slots or mortises in the ends of the axle, and one of said racks isprovided withalever, L.
The two racks are connected by two rods, i t', clamped together by a clamp, h, so as to be adjustable, if desired, though one continuous rod may answer the purpose.
When the wheels areadjusted the rod or rods z' are held in a fixed position by a clamp, M, or by a dog on the lever or other fastening device.
It will be noticed that with this device there is a double or simultaneous movement of the wheels-one up and the other down-whereby the sulky can be put in a level position, when one wheel is in a furrow or the sulky is on inclined ground, by the use of one lever or similar device used by hand, foot, or other power.
N is the plow-beam, having its forward end connected, by a clamp, O, with a rod, P, and this rod adjustably connected to a foot-lever, R, pivoted to the side of the tongue, by means of which the forward end of the plow may be raised or lowered at pleasure. When the forward end of the plow is raised while moving, the plow will rise out of the ground, as at the end of a furrow or over an obstruction, without being lifted, and when the forward end of the plow is lowered the plow will run deeper into the ground without being pushed in or forced in by weights.
The plowbeam N passes over the bail F, and is connected thereto by clamps S S, connected by screws or bolts m m. Each side of this clamp is made in two parts, fastened by bolts or screws around the bail, so that they may be put on or removed without interfering with the fastenings of the bail.
The clamp O, whichconnects the rod P to the forward end of the plow-beam, has a pin, n, on which said rod is placed, whereby there is a free motion allowed the same backward and forward.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a sulky-plow, the combination of the pivoted bail F with arm H, the braces I I, roller d, and cam-lever J, all constructed and IOO ' ]'usted simultaneously, one up and the other down, substantially as and for the' purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination of the bai1F,p1oW-beam N, and the double clamp S, having eaeh side made in two parts, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of 15 November, 1879.
G. H. WARREN.
