Description

Sept; 1941- J. MIKESELL 2,256,683
APPLICATOR BAND Filed April 9, 1940 INVVENTOR ATTORNEYS Patented Sept. 23, 1941 UNITED STATES PAT" Nr orrics 2 Claims.
The invention relates to an applicator band and more especially to a body or head band for treatment of difierent kinds of aches and pains.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a band of this character wherein through its construction treatment of ailing areas of the body or head may be carried forth successfully as well as in the application of medicaments for relieving such ailments, the band being of novel construction and as such will carry a hot water bottle or ice pack, the band being useable for association with a cap so that hair may be treated with oil or tonic as well as the scalp.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a band of this character wherein the same is susceptible of adjustment and also will carry different sizes of packs, hot water bottles or ice bags.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a band of this character, which is inherently elastic, simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in operation, susceptible of easy adjustment for application and removal, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a pictorial representation of the head of a person showing the band constructed in accordance with the invention applied.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the band in a flattened condition.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 2 with the band in encircling position.
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the band constituting the present invention comprises an elongated strip-like elastic 'body 5 preferably made from rubber stock having the required elasticity and flexibility, the end 6 of this band being outwardly tapered and has provided therein transversely disposed spaced parallel slots I. The other end of the body 5, which is the wider end thereof, is also provided with transverse slots 8, these being of greater length than the slots 1. By the lacing or training of the free terminal 9 of the end 6 first through the slots 8 and thence through selected slots 1 the band body 5 can be brought into an encircling position for embracing a limb, body part or the head of a user of the device. In Figure 1 of the drawing the band is shown applied to the head ID of av person, this .view of the drawing being illustrative of the application of the device when used upon a human being.
Also adapted to be associated with the band is a head cap similar to a bathing cap (not shown), the latter being useable for the treatment of the hair and scalp of a person and is retained in wearing position by the band body 5 on application thereof at the forehead area.
Intermediate of the ends of the band body 5 at opposite longer edges thereof are spaced laterally projected strap extensions II, the series at one side of the band body being outwardly tapered and have provided therein transverse slots [2 while the other series at the other edge of the band body are formed with transverse slots I3, these slots being for the purposes similarly assigned to the slots 1 and 8.
The straps II when adjustably connected together embrace a hot water bottle l4 although it may be an ice pack or other medium at the option of the user of the device. In Figure 1 of the drawing the bottle 14 is shown held in place in the use of the strap body 5.
At intervals intermediate of the strap body 5 at the longitudinal center thereof are spaced outstruck pockets or depressions l5, these being designed for retaining therein certain salves or other medicaments to be confined and applied to the skin or surface of a patient. These depressions are effective to avoid evaporation of the contents and also function as suction cups so that the full strength of the salve or medicaments may penetrate the ailing parts of the body resulting in needed relief.
The band in its entirety can be applied to the limbs of a person by encircling the same for treatment thereof.
The band in its entirety is primarily adapted for use upon the head of a person for special treatment of headaches and, as previously indicated, it may be otherwise used for the treatments as hereinbefore set forth.
What is claimed is:
1. A band of the kind described formed of a single piece of material, comprising an elastic elongated central strap portion having a series of transverse slots adjacent one end and the opposite end tapered and adapted to interlace the said slots, a series of spaced integral laterally extending straps carried by one edge of the elongated strap midway its ends andprovided with transverse slots, and a second series of spaced laterally extending integral straps extending from the opposite edge and oppositely opposed and tapering and adapted to interlace with the slots of the first series of laterally extending straps.
2. A band ofthe kind described formed of a single piece of material, comprising an elastic elongated central strap portion provided with' means for securing the ends together, a series of spaced integral laterally extending straps carried by one edge of the elongated strap midway its ends, and a second series of spaced laterally extending integral straps extending from the opposite edge and oppositely opposed, and means for securing the free ends of the two series of straps 10 together.
