Be it known that I, FRED R. Moore, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rotary Medicine Applicators, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a combined medicant applicator and massage device especially designed for external use.

Briefly stated, an important object of this invention is to provide a combined medicantapplicator and massage device having a medicant containing drum which when rolled over the flesh of the body will supply a quantity of medicant to the body and open the pores of the body to permit of the entrance of the medicant into the flesh.

A further object is to provide a combined medicant applicator and massage device having simple means whereby a medicant may be applied and thoroughly worked into the parts to be treated without the necessity of soiling ones hands with the medicant and without in any way injuring the fiesh.

Also, an important object of this invention is to provide a combined medicant applicator and massage device which may be economically employed and which when not in use may be inclosed within an air tight container so that the medicant cannot evaporate or cause the medicant containing absorbing element to dry out.

A further object of the invention is to provide a combined medicant applicator and massage device having a drum which may be conveniently heated so that during the use of the applicator the medicant will be thor- ,oughly heated and applied to the flesh with- 0112 11 blistering or otherwise irritating the s 111.

A further and equally important object of the invention is to provide a combined medicant applicator and massage device in which the medicant containing element, such as a cloth, may be detached and burned or otherwise destroyed with a minimum handling in case the same is used in connection with a contagious disease, such as smallpox.

A further object is to provide a combined medical applicator and massage device which is accessible to all portions of the body and which may be used for applying medicines, liniments, oils, salves, cold cream, or the like, and which will thoroughly work the medicant or the like into the skin and at the same time beneficially treat the skin.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a handle consisting of a pair of tubular sections detachably connected by a bayonet slot and pin connection 6. The sections of the tubular handle 5 are formed with compartments for the reception of small rolls of cloth designed to be wrapped about the main drum 7 in a manner to be fully hereinafter described and pointed out.

A shank 10 is connected to the handle 5 and has its forward portion in the form of a U and extended through the end plug 11 of the drum 7.

Fig. 3 ilustrates that the plug 11 is more or less permanently secured on the shank 10 by means of spacing sleeves or members 12 and 14, the spacing members being connected to the shank by means of transverse pins or other suitable fastening devices.

Attention is especially directed to the fact that the spacing sleeve 1A not only serves as a. means to secure the plug 11 in place, but also as a means to guide the drum "2' to its proper and final position. At this POiIlt it might be stated that a plurality of layers of cloth 15 are wrapped about the drum 7 and the ends of the same are extended beyond the drum and received in the enlarged portions 16 and 17 of the bore of the drum and it is desirable to guide the drum into final position so that the plug 11 will be received centrally in the enlarged recess or bore 16 of the drum to bind the inturned ends of the cloth in place as illustrated in Fig. 3.

A second drum 20 may be mounted upon the shank and is received in the enlarged bore 17 so as to bind the adjacent portion of the cloth in position. It is thus seen that after the cloth is wrapped about the drum 7 the ends of the same are turned intothe enlarged portions 16 and 17 of the bore and securely held in place by means of the plugs 11 and 20 with any desired degree of tension. A suitable quantity of cotton batting or the like is confined between the cloth and the periphery of the drum.

When the plug 20 has been applied a twolegged spring fastener 23 is anchored in an annular groove 24: in the end portion of the shank so as to hold the drum and the associated parts together for use.

lVhen the device is not actually in use the medicant contained in the cloth may be preserved by a container 30 having a cap 31 threaded onto the outer side of the container and having a centrally arranged flange 33 which engages the plug 11 and thereby provides an air tight connection between the plug 11 and the container to positively prevent the evaporation of the medicant or hardening of the cloth.

l/Vhen the housing or casing 30 is applied the odors of the medicant are confined within the casing. No oils can work out of the housing when the cap is screwed down against the plug and furthermore the cloth is prevented from getting dirty while within the housing.

In case the device is used for massaging purposes, the housing could possibly remain in place, or the cloth may be removed from k the drum and the drum or a still smaller drum employed;

In case the drum is heated, the heat radiating from the same will melt the salve and open the pores of the skin to allow the salve to enter. It will be observed that one end of the drum is more or less free and the shank extends from the other end of the drum so that the device may be used on all portions of the body without interference by the shank or the handle.

A medicant applicator constructed in accordance with this invention is especially designed for use in applying salves, liniments, cold cream, and the like, and in case the device is used in connection with a cont-agious disease-such as smallpox, the cloth may be readily removed and burned or otherwise destroyed. Very little handling of the cloth is necessary.

A medicant applicator and massage device constructed in accordance with this invention provides for the application of the medicant without soiling ones hands and without irritating the skin. The roller merely rolls over the skin and does not in any way injure the same. 7 s

In preparing the device for use a quantity of cotton batting or the like is arranged about the drum and the cloth is then wrapped about the cotton batting with its ends extended beyond the drum. The cloth or, more specifically, that portion of the same which is extended beyond the drum at one end is now inserted into the chamber 17 and the plug 20 is inserted to wedge the end of the cloth in place.

The drum 7 and the plug 20 are now applied to the shank and the extended p'ortion of the cloth at the other end of the drum is wedged between the plug 11 and the wall of the chamber 16. The parts are held in assembled position by means of the fastener 23.

It will be noted that the plug 11 is more or less permanently connected to the shank and this permits the shank and plug 11 to be removed from the drum as a unit.

Otherwise, the shank could be conveniently removed from the drum and there would probably be difficulty in removing the plug 11. After the shank and the plug 11 have been removed from the drum, the plug 20 may be detached by a suitable instrument.

Having thus described the invention, What is claimed is:

1. A combined medicant applicator and massage device comprising a drum having a bore enlarged at its ends, a plug adapted to be received in one of the enlarged ends of said bore, a shaft extending through the plug, a second plug adapted to be received in the other end of the bore of the drum, and means to secure the second plug on the shaft. 7 7

2. A combined medicant applicator and massage device comprising a drum having a bore enlarged at its ends, a plug adapted to be received in one of the enlarged ends of said bore, a shaft extending through the plug, a second plug adaptedtobe received in the the other end of the bore of the drum,

A combined medicant applicator and V massage device comprising a drum having a bore enlarged at its ends, a plug adapted to be received in one of the enlarged ends of said bore, a shaft extendingthrough the plug, a second plug adapted V to be received inthe other end of the bore of the drum, means to secure the second plug on the shaft, a medicant container in the form of a plurality of layers of cloth about the drum, said medicant container having its ends received in the enlarged end portions of said bore and engaged by said first and second-named plugs, and a combined holding member and guide mounted on said shaft for holding said plugs in place and for guiding said drum to final position.

4:. A combined medicant applicator and massage device comprising a drum having a bore enlarged at its ends, a plug adapted to be received in one of the enlarged ends of said bore, a shaft extending through the plug, a second plug adapted to be received in the other end of the bore of the drum, means to secure the second plug on the shaft, a medicant container in the form of a plurality of layers of cloth about the drum, said medicant container having its ends received in the enlarged end portions of said bore and engaged by said first and secondnamed plugs, a combined holding member and guide mounted on said shaft for holding said plugs in place and for guiding said drum to final position, and a container adapted to receive said drum and having a cap having an air tight connection with one of said plugs.

A combined medicant applicato and massage device comprising a substantially U-shaped shank, a plug mounted on the shank, a fastening sleeve mounted on the shank and engaging said plug, a drum having a bore enlarged at its ends, said fastening member constituting a means to guide said plug to final osition, a second plug detachably received in one of said enlarged ends of the bore of the drum, means to detachably secure said second plug on the shaft, and a medicant containing cloth wrapped about the drum and having its ends received in the ends of the drum and engaged by said plugs.

A combined medicant applicator and massage device comprising a substantially U-shaped shank, a plug mounted on the shank, a fastening sleeve mounted on the shank and engaging said plug, a drum having a bore enlarged at its ends, said fastening member constituting a means to guide said plug to final position, a second plug detachably received in one of said enlarged ends of the bore of the drum, means to detaohably secure said second plug on the shaft, a medicant containing cloth wrapped about the drum and having its ends received in the ends of the drum and engaged by said plugs, and a container having a closure provided with an air tight connection with one of said plugs.

A combined medicant applicator and massage device comprising a substantially U-shaped shank, a plug mounted on the shank, a fastening sleeve mounted on the shank and engaging said plug, a drum having a bore enlarged at its ends, said fastening member constituting a means to guide said plug to final position, a second plug detachably received in one of said enlarged ends of thebore of the drum, means to detachably secure said second plug on the shaft, a medicant containing cloth wrapped about the drum and having its ends received in the ends of the drum and engaged by said plugs, a container having a closure provided with an air tight connection with one of said plugs, and a handle consisting of a pair of tubular sections having compartments for the reception of rolls of cloth.
