(01. 248-354) My invention relates -to ---adustable shores adapted for use in mining, building,-etc.=- and has for anobject the provision of ashore which is inexpensive in construction, simple and reliable in operation, and'which will not readily get out oforder.
- My invention further; contemplates the provision of ashore-having a base portion and a vertically adjustable member in the form :ofa squared timber which is mounted for telescopic movement in the-base member. .Athead portion is formedeon the upper end. of the base portion to receive a dog-and a-wedge which serve to lock the, adjustable .zmember against vertical movement withrespect to 'itsbase member. When the shore is to be removed from its supporting position the wedge is knocked out of engagement with the dog to; permit the dog to disengage the adjustable member. When the shore is employed as a temporary support for a mine roof, it is advisable to be at a distant point when the shore is removed and it is, therefore, an object of my invention to provide a wedge operating block which may be actuated at a remote point through a rope or cable to disengage the dog from the adjustable member. The shore may then be pulled out of the danger zone by means of the rope or cable.
My invention further contemplates the provision of an adjustable cap board to be mounted on the upper end of the adjustable member. A pivotal mounting is provided for the cap board in order that the cap board will move into alignment with sloping or uneven roofs. A wedge is employed for adjusting the cap board vertically with respect to the adjustable member.
My invention embodies other novel features, details of construction and arrangement of parts which are hereinafter set forth in the specification and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming part thereof, where- 1n:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view showing my improved adjustable shore; and
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along the line 11-11 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawing for a better understanding of my invention, I show an adjustable shore comprising a base member 6 having an adjustable member I mounted for telescopic movement therein. The base member comprises a pair of channels 8 and 9 having their flanges facing inwardly to define an opening adapted to receive the adjustable member 1 for vertical movement therein. The channels 8 and 9 are joined to each otherby'df straps [0 which are preferably formed U-Shape-d-and having their ends welded to the web-portienof the channels. Aplate H is-welded to -the-lower ends of the channels to provide a" foot for the base 4 member. "The -channel members: 8 and 3 are preferably. formed of sheet-*steebof relatively light gauge and provided.- with-axially extending beads 12 which. add considerably to the load carrying capacity .of these members and also contribute to the ornamental .:a;ppearance.

Each aperture is formed to provide inwardly facing ears 24 which serve as guides for the wedge member by engaging the side flange 25 thereof. A block of hardened steel 26 is mounted in the housing to serve as a friction bearing for the wedge. A rivet 21 is provided in the lower end of the wedge for engagement with the ears 24 to prevent accidental displacement of the wedge from the housing. Beads 28 are formed in the back wall I9 of the housing.
A dog 30 is mounted within the housing It and is formed with a toothed front surface 3| for engagement with the adjustable member I. The other endof the dog is formed with a rounded bearing surface 32 for engagement by the wedge 23 and with side flanges 33 having inwardly disposed lugs 34 for engagement behind the side flange 25 of the wedge. A spring 35 is secured in the housing below the forward end of the dog to yieldably resist a downward movement of the forward end of the dog.
A dog release hammer 36 formed of metal is suspended below the housing I6 on a rope or cable 31 which has its ends fastened in openings 38 by lock washers 39. A guide member 40 is welded to the bottom of the housing and provided with eyes 4| to receive and guide the rope 31. A clip 42 is fastened to the rope 31 at its center and to a rope or cable 43 which may be of any suitable length. A tongue 44 is formed on the hammer to engage in the groove formed between the beads l2 which serve as guides for the hammer when it is moved verticaIly.
The lips 46 and 41 formed on the side walls [1 and 18 of the head portion M for engagement by and a partition plate 53 welded thereto to fit over the top end of the member .I and to be secured thereto .by means of a bolt 54.. Apertures 55 and 56 are: formed in oppositely disposed side walls to receive a wedge member 51, and the apertures are formed to provide inwardly disposed ears 58 which engage the inner side of the wedge flange 59 to serve as guides for the wedge. A rivet 60 is mounted on the small end of the wedge to prevent removal of the'wedge from its apertures. A bracket BI is provided. to receive a I claim:
1. In an adjustable shore, a base member, an
adjustable member mounted for vertical movement in said base member, a dog housing provided on the base member, a dog positioned within said housing for engagement with said adjustable member, a wedge for moving said dog into and out of engagement with the adjustable member, a hammer for driving the wedge into position to disengage the dog from the adjustable member, and means foractuating-said hammer.

The rope 43 is then employed to draw the shore out from under an unsupported and unsafe mine roof. 7
