C. A. ROOS ADJUSTABLE SHORE Filed June :50, 1922 #V1/farma' Patented Nov. 25, i924.
Uhlll@ STATES PATENT OFFCE.
CHARLES A. ROOS, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-IIALF TO GEORGE W. MEYER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
ADJUSTABLE SHORE.
Application led June 30, 1922.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. Roos, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State ot Ohio, have invented new and use- 'ul Improvements in Adjustable Shores, of
which the Yfollowing is a specication.
My invention relates to adjustable shores or extensible uprights, used briefly in the building art to support forms for concrete, or anywhere where a temporary support is required. My invention includes a. metal channel adapted to stiften each ot the main supporting members, which are usually made ot wood.
Another object of my invention is use of a cross-head and as the cross-head works in the channel it does not protrude beyond the sides of the supports, therefore, the shores may be stacked one upon another rapidly and without damage to each other, and occupy the least possible space. Nor will tie straps interfere with the full extension of the shore. Should the main supporting members warp somewhat, the cross-head will still work freely in the channels; and tie straps may be used to prevent warping and to keep the supports in their correct relative positions even when supporting great weights.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings of which Figure l, a front elevation, shows my improved shore (shortened by breaking), in partly extended position.
Figure 2, a side elevat-ion, shows my improved shore (similarly broken) in the same position, and
Figure 3 is a cross section on the line 3 3 of Figure l.
Referring now to the drawings.
The cro-ordinating elements are designated respectively as A and B; the part A being vertically adjustable upon and telescopically engaged with the part B. The adjustable part A comprises a pair of stanehions or main supporting members, al and a?, preferably of wood, spaced apart in parallel relation by tie stra-ps a3 rigidly connected to and preferably sunk into said stanchions. A pair ot channel guide elements at preferably of sheet metal and coextensive with the eitective length oi' the stanchion members a1 and a2, are secured one to the inner side ot each of said stanchion Serial No. 572,042.
members. The relatively fixed or base element B, preferably made of iron or steel pipe, is provided with a cross head pin b1 at its upper end. Said cross head pin projects laterally into the channel of both the channel shaped elements at to slide therein and be guided thereby, when the part A is being adjusted.
The part A at the top has a tie beam a and the part B at the bottom is provided with a terminal foot Z2 of somewhat enlarged area.
A plate a5 is bored through its center and secured to the bottom of the stanchions a1 and a2.
An automatic lock is provided to hold the elements in position after adjustment. Said lock consists ot a perforated plate C having upturned edge o suspended at one side upon a pivot c2 extending thru the stanchions a1 and a2 and the upturned sides c of the plate C.
A pin c3 is secured to the plate Cv and holds in position a spring E, forcing the front edge c1 of the plate C upward, making the diagonally opposite edges of the plate C bite into and grip the element B thereby holding the elements in locked relation to each other. In order to release the lock it will only be necessary to bear down on the front c1 ot the plate C, bringing it to a horizontal position. Obviously more than one such locking plate may be used it desired,
Many changes may be made in my device without departing from the spirit of the invention; as for instance, the cross head may be made with vertical tongue or groove on the faces opposite the supports and the supports with groove or tongue respectively adapted to laterally engage the cross head being` guided thereby.
Having described my invention, I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States l. An adjustable shoring device having in combination an eXtensible member formed of parallel bars secured in spaced relation to each other, longitudinal metal guides on the inner sides of said parallel bars, a relatively fixed member telescopically adjustable within the extensible member, having a cross head lying wholly within the enclosure formed by said bars and adapted to engage said metal guides, and
means for lockingI said extensible and relatively fixed members in adjusted relation to each other.
2. In Combination with an adjustable shoring device comprising two extensible bars held in parallel spaced relation by a series of rigid spacingbars, and telescopically engaged with ak relatively ixed member having a Cross head lying Wholly Within the Space formed by said extensible bars and 10 In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 15 my hand,
CHARLES A. ROOS
