UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT HATOHMAN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO DETROIT STOVE WORKS, OF SAME PLACE.
ATTACH MENT FO R MAGAZI NE-STOVES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 225,597, dated March 16, 1880. Application filed January 8, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT HATCHMAN, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Attachments to Magazine-Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention relates to a new and useful improvement in attachments to that class of stoves in which the fuel is burned at the base of a column which is supported in a magazine over the fire-pot and combustionchamber.
In stoves of this class, when the fire goes out and it becomes necessary to rekindle it, the grate is dumped, the coal in the magazine, resting upon the debris in the flrepot, follows such debris into the ash-pit, and, mingling with the ashes, causes trouble in separating the one from the other.
The object of my invention is to provide an implement or attachment by means of which the coal may be retained in the magazine and prevented from following the ashes into the ash-pit when the grate is dumped, and to adapt the stove to receive and retain the implement in place when the latter is in use.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lower end of a stove-magazine Fig 2 is a detached perspective of the implement.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents the lower end of a stove-magazine constructed in the usual manner, except it that is provided at points opposite each other with outwardlyprojecting lugs or studs a.
B is a slicer or removable shelf, provided with a flange, 0, having hooks or catches b at points opposite each other, and with a handle, O.
In practice, when it is desired to dump the grate and there is coal in the magazine, the door of the combustion-chamber of the stove is opened, and the slicer is inserted and forced through the column of coal at the base of the magazine until the hooks or catches on the slicer engage with thestuds on the magazine, when the grate may be dumped.
The flange 0 extends entirely around the outer edge of the slicer, excepting at its front edge, and serves the purpose of guiding the slicer in placing it in position under the magazine and allowing the formation'of the opposite hooks, I), made in the flange.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the magazine A, provided with the studs a, lying opposite each other, of the slicer 13, having the handle 0, and flange 0, provided with the opposite hooks b, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
