Definitions
- the object of the wings is for holding Water in back motion.
- the curved blade or paddle A is wider at the ends than at the center. While in use the blade takes effect on the water at the ends first, and the water is forced both Ways to the center. The main part of the water thus emptying at the center will not force the water against the boat, which would reduce the speed.
Description
J. L; GHESTON. Paddle fdr Boat-Wheels. l No. 225,567., Patentedmar. 16,1880.
l.' I I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JONATHAN L. CHESTON, OF SOUTH EASTON, PENNSYLVANIA..
PADDLE `FOR BOAT-WH EELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,567, dated March 16, 1880.
Application led February 4, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known' that I, JONATHAN L. CHEsToN, of South Easton, in the county of Northampton and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paddles for Boat-Wheels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference lmarked thereon, making a part of tion, of the same.
A represents theV paddle, made in curved form, as shown, and provided with a cap, B, on top, and .attached to the ordinary radial arms of the paddle-wheel by bolts, rivetsfor other means, as indicated at the holes .n .r in the paddle. The paddle has also a wing, C, at
each end, With stays D D riveted to the wing and running toward the center of the paddle, and also riveted thereto to support the win gs in backing water.
The object of the wings is for holding Water in back motion. The curved blade or paddle A is wider at the ends than at the center. While in use the blade takes effect on the water at the ends first, and the water is forced both Ways to the center. The main part of the water thus emptying at the center will not force the water against the boat, which would reduce the speed.
The paddles may be adjusted or put on arms of boats already built with but slight alteration-that is, by lieveling the arms to iit the curve of the paddle.
By this construction ofthe paddles the speed will be increased, and it will also decrease the trembling of the boat in running. They may be made of metal or any material desired suitable for the purpose, and of such dimensions as the size of the boat may require.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The curved paddle A, wider at the ends than at the center, and provided with the cap B, wings C, and stays D, substantiallyr as herein set forth. Y
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of January, 1880. l
JONATHAN L. GHESTON. Witnesses:
EDWARD Y. KITCHEN,
. S. D. BoR'rELL.
