Description

W. B. GANEDY. Combined Anvil and Vise.
No. 225,563. Patented Mal-[16,1880
ATTORNEY ".PEI'ERS, PHOTO-LITHOGHAPHER. WASHINGTON. D. G,
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM E. OANEDY, OF ROCHESTER, MINNESOTA.
COMBINE D ANVIL AND V|SE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,563, dated March 16, 1880.
Application filed January 12, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. CANEDY, of Rochester, in the county of Olmsted and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Combined Anvil and Vise; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a partof this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of an end view of the anvil. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the vise. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same, and Fig. 4 is a partly-sectional side view of my combined anvil and vise.
The nature of the invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated my invention applied to the end of an anvil.
In this construction the end of the anvil A is provided with a recess or opening, a, of rectangular form, having lips I) c at its upper and lower edges and exterior side guides, d, on each side of said recess or opening, which forms the receiving or holding portion of the attachment.
The movable or swinging awB is pivoted to the lower end of an arm, 0, which extends upward, with parallel side guides, c, a sufficient distance to receive the vise-screw D, which passes through an aperture, 9, in the upper end of said arm, the vise-spring 8 being seated around said screw between said arm and the jaw B. On the upper end of the arm 0, next the anvil, is formed a rectangular lug or catch, E, of less width than the breadth of the arm, so that the parallel side guides, 6, form shoulders or offsets along the base of said lug. This lugis of rectangularform usually and of proper width to engage with the opening or recess a of the anvil. At its upper and lower ends are formed vertical lips h k, which are designed to engage with the upper and lower lips, I) c, of the anvil-recess, forming, when properly connected therewith, a clutch-joint.
In the end of the lug is made a recess, m, of square form, which receives and holds the nut a, with which the vise-screw engages. The
upper lip, h, of the lug is usually made somewhat longer than the lower lip, k, and the swinging jaw is applied by introducing the lug E into the recess or opening a, the upper lip entering first in an inclined position, then bringing the arm O down against the anvil, so that the side guides of the arm and anvil will be in contact. Then the arm 0 is pressed downward, engaging its lower lip with that of the anvil-recess, and bringing the biting end of its jaw into proper position opposite that of the anvil. This movement can be made with one hand and very quickly, and an equally rapid and facile motion will disconnect the arm 0 and its jaw.
It is evident that aclutch-connection of this character canfbe arranged at the side as well as at the end of the vise, and that the details of its construction may be varied by those skilled in the art, and that sometimes the arm 0 may extend to the top of the anvil and form one of the vise-jaws. Hence I do not desire 'to be confined to the precise construction shown; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with an anvil having a rectangular recess or opening, a, in its side or end, provided with lips b 0, one above the other, of a vise having a lug or catch, E, provided with lips h k, adapted to engage the lips of the opening of said anvil, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with an anvil, A, having recess or opening a, bounded by vertical guide-ribs cl, and provided withlips I) 0, respectively, above and below the opening of said recess, of a vise having the rectangular lug E, provided with a long lip, h, on its upper and a short lip. k, on its lower edge, adapted to be received in said recess, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM EATON GANEDY.
