(01. 132-8 3) My invention relates to certain new-and useful improvements in compacts which are carried in a purse or handbag coutrement.

An object of the invention is to produce a comu pact incorporating an electric light source by and contain cosmetic ac which it can be illuminated when extraneous be opened to a reclining position and the side pieces unfolded to a suitable angle as required in the application of-the cosmetics, the. light source being so disposed as to illuminate the reflective faces of the mirror.

'A distinctive feature of construction resides in the arrangement of a reflector at the base of the lamp for the upward'and outward emission of light, and another feature is contained in the novel structure of the battery compartment and switch.

The invention will be better understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the closed compact.

Figure 2 is a similar view showing the lid of the cosmetic compartment partly open and the lid of the battery compartment fully open.

Figure 3 illustrates the compact opened for use.

Figure 4 is a longitudinal section.

In constructing my device, I provide a shallow.

The opening forsaid lid is formed in part by a narrow transverse wall 6 integral with the front wall I that extends to the bottom wall 2' of the tray 2, and below this front wall is an ,opening leading into the battery compartment 3 that is normally closed by a lid 8 hinged at 9 and equipped with a pull It in addition to a customary catch-not shown. Said opening for the lid "4 is also formed in part by a narrow transverse wall ll integral with the rear wall I! of the body and having a frontal edge that serves as an abutment shoulder for this lid in order to maintain-it in an inclined position when open. This lid is hinged on a transverse pintle I3 secured to the-sides of the body and the knuckle is carried by the'angular flanges 13' to enable the lid to swing properly. The interior face of the lid is a mirror and the sides have inwardly projecting supports ll that hingedly carry wing mirrors l5 that are unfolded to compose a triple mirror construction. The wing mirrors foldinwardly to lie parallel with the lid in closing the same.

The top of the tray is disposed below the top of the body so as to provide clearance for the triple mirror, and hinged covers l6 are supplied for folding over and thus protecting the cosnretics within the tray, which is of a capacity to contain the usual preparations common to compacts. The tray is preferably rigidly mounted in the case-body and extends rearwardly but terminates short of the hinged part of lid 4 to provide a lamp well. i The lamp well accommodates an arcuate reflector I! that is upturned and transversely secured at its ends to the side walls of the body. The reflector, which is a metalmember, has a medial socket IS in which is fitted a standard bulb I9, the base of which extends below the reflector and is of the single contact type.

vAn ordinary battery I9 is lodged in the compartment 3 below the tray with its terminal posts 20 and 20f projecting rearwardly below the lamp well. 1 It will also be manifest that due to the disposition of the bulb and its reflector light rays will be emitted in the most desirable manner for effectively illuminating the compact in its use with its triple mirror construction.

I claim: 1. A compact of the class described comprising a case having a compartment accessible 7 by an opening, a closure for said opening including an interior mirror that is swung to a backwardly inclined position in the opening of the closure, wing mirrors at the sides of said mirror, and supports mounting said wing mirrors on the closure so that they may unfold outwardly when the closure is opened, the structure being char-- acterized in that the said supports project in- 1 wardly from the closure and are hinged to the wing mirrors which-enable the wing mirrors to fold flat in co-planar relation so as to occupy a minimum of space when not in use.

2. A compact of the class described comprising a case having a compartment accessible by an opening in its top, a tray in said compartment for containing cosmetics, said .tray being disposed below the top of the case, a lid for said opening hingedly mounted at the rear thereof and swingable upwardly to a sustained backwardly inclined position, the inner face of said lid being a mirror, wing mirrors at the sides of said mirror, and supports hingedly mounting said wing mirrors on the lid inwardly of said mirror so that the wing mirrors may be folded flat against the same to clear said tray when the lid is closed.

A compact comprising an elongated rectangular case-body of a shallow construction having a top opening extending the full length of the body with the exception of narrow transverse top walls at the ends thereof respectively integral with front and rear end walls, a lid normally closing said opening and hinged at the rear thereof by a pintle transversely secured to the sides of the body such that the lid may swing upwardly to a rearwardly inclined position in which it abuts the rear transversetop wall of the body, the inner face of said lid being constructed as a mirror, supports extending inwardly of the sides of the lid, wing mirrors hingedly carried by said supports for unfolding to compose a triple mirror, a depressed tray within said tom of the body and having an intermediate socket, an electric bulb in the socket with its base projecting below the reflector, a battery in the lower compartment aforesaid having a pair of terminal posts, one of which is bent to engage a contact of the bulb-base, a slide switch having an arm for contact with the other terminal post of the battery, and means forming a conductor between the bulb and the switch such as to complete the circuit when the switch is closed.
