MPETERS, HUTGLITMDGRAPER. WASHINGTDN. DV CV UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES J. RENO, OF GREENBUSH, NEW YORK.
.PERMUTATION-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,490, dated March 16, 1880.
Application filed November 22, 1879. V
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES-J. RENO, of Greenbush, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Lock; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot" the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures ot' reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a view of the back of the lock, with portions of the back plates ot' the case and cylinder broken away 5 also showing the knobs of the adjusting-screws for the cylinder-teeth removed. Fig. 2 is a section taken in the plane indicated by dotted line m Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section taken in the plane y y, Fig. 4. Fig. 4 is a front view of the lock.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to permutation-locks; and it consists in a cylinder or its equivalent, which is capable at certain times of being rotated for operating a bolt or latch, and which is provided with toothed slides, in combination with bars which are notched and longitudinally adjustable, the Whole being so construct-ed and arranged in a lock-case that the said cylinder can only be rotated to release or move the bolt or. latch when the notches in all of said bars are made to register with their respective teeth on the slides of the cylinder, as will be hereinafter explained.
Any desired number of toothed slides and any desired number of notched bars may be used, according as it may be required` to construct a lock which is more or less difficult to pick.
The lock which I have invented and am about to describe is designed to be used on the doors of safes, vaults, and on doors `for various purposes where it is desired to have a simple and cheap lock which cannot be picked by any ordinary means.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a cylinder, which is designed to pass through a door, and which is suitably secured to the lock-case B. Gis a cylinder, which is fixed by a pin, a, to a shaft, D, so that .it can be turned about its axis by means of a knob, D', at the front of cylinder A. .E E E are slides,
"which are tted into grooves in cylinder O, and
constructed with teeth b, that protrude from the periphery of this cylinder. These slides are movable in a direction with the length of cylinder C by means of screws c, which extend through the back plate of case B, and have knobs d on them.
F F F are Hat bars, which are endwise movable by means of screws e e c, and-which are notched at f. The bars F are arranged in close relation to the circumference of cylinder O, and they pass through the front and back plates of the lock-case B. The front ends of the screws e pass freely through thefront plateV of cylinder A, and have small knobs g g g Xed to them.
When all of the notches f in the bars F are caused to register with all -of the teeth b of slides E the cylinder C can be turned about its axis and a bolt or latch, J, retracted or shot, and it is only when the notches are in line with their respective teeth that said cylinder can be turned so as to operate the bolt.
It is obvious that the bars F and slides E can be adjusted by their screws 4for any combination, and that the combination must be known in order to move the bolt.
A tongue, h, attached to the cylinder O, is used for retracting the bolt J, and a spring, S, isused for shooting this bolt 5 but I do not coniine myself to this arrangement, as other means for working the bolt may be adopted. Neither do I contlne myself to a definite number of notched bars F and adjustable teeth b.
What I claim as my invention is The cylinder C, bearing adjustable teeth b, in combination with adjustable notched bars F and adjusting-screws c and c, applied in a lock-case and arranged substantially as described.
OHARLES J. RENO.
