This invention relates to cutting devices Yand has particular reference to a device for cutting siding material and the like.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of the character referred to, which is lightand readily portable and has a high deg-ree of maneuverability in closely confined spaces.
Another object of the inventionis the provision of a device which can be employed to cut Celotex and like materials by simply pushing or pulling lthe material through the device.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device which can be used to notch out as well as cut materials such as indicated above.
The foregoing objects and other advantages of the invention will become more apparent as the description proceeds, reference being made from time to time to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a device embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view with parts broken away, and partly in section, illustrating the manner in which the material to be cut is forced through the device.
Fig. 3 is a section taken substantially on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a section taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a section taken substantially on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing it will be understood that in the embodiment herein disclosed, my device consists generally of a special C clamp 1 with which the device may be mounted on a scaffold board or the like, a substantially larger bracket 8, and a tubular body member 9. The lower end of the body member 9 rests in a suitable socket I 0, formed as an integral part of the C clamp 1, and is held against displacement by a set screw I I. A collar I2, having detents I3, formed on its upper edge, is adjustably mounted on the body 9, and is held against displacement by a set screw I4. The collar I2, is intended to serve as an adjustable support for the bracket 8, the end I5 of which is a hollow cylinder adapted to fit over the body 9. The end I5 is provided with recesses I6 adapted to engage the detents I3 of the collar I2, so that the bracket 8 may be swung into several operating positions. A second collar I1 is mounted on the body 9 and is secured in place by the set screw I1. Between the collar I1 and the end member I5 is a coil spring I8. This serves to hold the bracket 8 against the collar I2, but permits the bracket to be moved upwardly, if it is desired to swing the bracket, or if there is an overload on the cutting elements described hereinafter.
The lower cutting element I9 is a circular knife, which is mounted on a spindle 2i), the latter being carried by a casting 2l. The knife I9 may be held in position on the spindle 2D by collars 22. Y ,The casting 2| Vis provided with a depression or cup-like formation 23, in which oiled waste or another lubricating medium for the cutting member I9 may be carried. The casting 2I is provided with a depending portion 24 which extends into the tubular body member 9. Two slots 25 in the portion 24 engage a pin 26 which extends through the body 9 and prevents the casting from turning normally, but permits it to be raised and lowered., and permits it to be rotated 90 degrees when in raised position. A cam surface 21 is formed on the edge of the casting 2I and is adapted to engage a corresponding cam surface 28-formed on the turning collar 29, which is mounted for rotation on the end of the body 9. A lug 30 on the collar 29 engages a pin 29 on the body 9 and serves as a stop for the rotation of the collar 29. The collar 29 is provided with suitable handles 32, whereby the same may be turned. As'the collar 29 is turned the engagement of the cam surfaces 21 and 28 causes the casting 2| to be raised or lowered, thereby causing the cutting element I9 to approach or recede to o-r from the cutting element 33, which in this embodiment is a saw or sharp toothed wheel 34, mounted on the spindle which is carried on the casting 36, the latter being slidably mounted in the upper end of the bracket 8. The casting 36 is provided with detents 31 adapted to engage recesses 38 in the end of the bracket 8 and serve as locking means against the rotation of the casting 36. The casting 36 has a shank 39 at the end of which is a pressure knob 40. A coil spring 4I is interposed between the knob 40 and the end of the bracket 8. The spring 4I normally urges the casting 36 and cutting element 33 upwardly, but permits them to be lowered by compressing the spring.
In using the device the bracket 8 is swung to the position `desired and the cutting elements are placed in alignment in their desired position. The material 42 to be cut (Fig. 2) is then forced through the device. The upper cutting element 33 4being in the form of a toothed member, can
2. In a device of the character described, the a body member combination of a bracket, mounted at one end of said bracket, cutting eleupper end of said bracket, a circular cutting member mounted in said bifurcated member, and a second circular cutting member mounted on means at the free end of said body member.
5. The combination defined in claim 4, in which the said second cutting member is mounted for rotation on a bifurcated member having a depending portion which telescopes the tubular body member. Y
3. In aV device of the character described, the combination of a bracket, 'abody member mounted at one endo said bracket, cutting elements carried respectively by members on the other end of said bracketand on said body member, the said cutting elements being circular in formatiomfand pivoted `for rotation in common planes, and in planes' angular to one another.
4, A device of` the ycharacter vdescribed'com-V prising the combination of `va substantially'cshaped bracket, a-tubular body member extending through thelower end of said bracket, fasteningmeans secured'to said body member, a bifurcated fmemberadjustably mounted in the adjustable collar carried on said tubular body member.
'7; The combination dened in claim 4, in which there are spring means interposed between the member, and between the said bracket and an adjustable collar carried on said tubular body member, the said bifurcated member having a,
cam surface adapted to engagea corresponding cam surface carried on arotatable .collar member mountedat the end of said body member.v
8. The combinaticnqenned in nannay includ'-l ing a collar adjustablyA secured to said body member, said' collar havingy lmeans 'to rengage' means on said bracket f or locking thefb'rack'et in position. r
ing means on said bracketV and means onsaid bifurcated member' which co-operate to lock the said parts against rotation. f
