Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed may 10, 1915. Serial N0. 210%.
ments in Glass-Tube Cutters, of which thefollowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a glass tube cutter, and the primary object of my invention is to provide hand manipulated cutting device that can be easily and quickly placed in engagement with a glass tube to expeditiously cut the same, without any danger of the tube being cracked due to the fragile nature of glass.
A further object of this invention is to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive cutting device for operatin upon the periphery of a glass tube to place the same in a condition without the and ragged severed ends presenting uneven edges, and provision is made whereby the pressure of the cutters upon the tube can be gradually increased during the cuttin operation, without any danger of the tune accidentally breaking or collapsing,
The above and other objects are attained by a device consisting of comparatively few parts that are easy to assemble and adjust, and t1 e device will be hereinafter specii'ically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had'to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is ting device illustrating the same relative to a glass tube; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a plan of the cutting device; Fig. i is a front elevation of a modified form of glass tube cutter, and Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view of the same.
The preferred form of device comprises a yoke 1 having the curved end thereof bifurcated or slotted, as at 2 to provide clearance for rotary cutters 3 that are supported within the bifurcation or slot of the yoke by transverse pins 4:. lhe revoluble cutters 3 are of the ordinary and well known form commonly styled Diamond cutters and said cutters are spaced apart and in proximity to the ends of the bifurcation or slot 2. These cutters are arranged so that the peripheries thereof project inwardly from the inner side of the yoke, to operate upon that the tube can be broken a front elevation of the cut-v the periphery of a glass tube or cylinder 5 that is placed in the yoke. Besides these inwardly projecting cutters the curved end of the yoke is provided with an outwardly projecting cutter 6, disposed intermediate the cutters 3 and adapted to be utilized as an ordinary glass cutter for scoring or cutting flat pieces of glass.
The ends of the yoke 1 are adapted to extend through openings 7 provided therefor in a clamping block or cross head 8, which has a V-shaped notch 9 presenting flat facets adapted to engage the glass tube or cylinder 5 and cooperate with the curved end of the yoke in retaining the tube or cylinder in engagement with the revoluble cutters 3 The ends of the yoke 1 are screwthreaded and extend through openings provided therefor in a tension member 10 carried by the clamping block 8. The tension member 10.is in the form of a resilient or flexible plate that is secured intermediate its ends to an enlargement 11 of the clamping block 8 by a set screw 12 or other fastening means. The ends of the tension member 10 are yieldable relative to the clamping block 8 and engaging these yieldable ends are winged thumb nuts 13 screwed upon the By ad usting threaded ends of the yoke. the winged thumb nuts 13 the clamping block 8 be yieldably held against the periphery of the glass tube or cylinder 5, and by rotating the device relative to tube or cyl nder or by turning the tube or cylinder in the device, the inwardly projecting cutters 3 are caused to circumferentially score or out the surface of the tube or cylinder to that extent that it is severed without presenting ragged or uneven ends.
In Figs. i and 5 of the drawing there is illustrated a modification of my invention, wherein the yoke 1 is dispensed with and a ring 14: substituted therefor, said ring having inwardly and outwardly projecting cutters similar to the yoke 11. The ring 14 at a point diametrically opposite the cutters thereof is provided with an interiorly screwthreaded bearing 15 for a screw 16 and said screw has a knurled head 17 at the outer end thereof to facilitate adjusting the screw in the ring. lhe screw 16 has a 1011 gitudinal bore 18 and revolubly mounted in said bore is a rod 19 provided with a collar 20 engaging the inner end of the screw, said collar cooperating with a Washer 21 upon the outer end of the rod in preventing longitudinal displacement of said rod relative to the screw. The rod is therefore swiveledin the screw and the inner end thereof is pivotally mounted, by a pin 22, between apertured lugs 23 forming part of. an inverted V-shaped clamping member 24 serving the same purpose as the clamping block or cross head 8 previously described.
By adjusting the screw 16 the rod 19 and the clamping member 24 thereof are shifted radially of the ring 14 and said clamping member can readily cooperate with the ring in retaining a glass tube or cylinder in engagement with the cutters of the ring.
The ring 14, besides accommodating tubes or cylinders of larger diameters-than could be accommodated by the yoke 1, facilitates swinging the device around the periphery of the tube or cylinder to-score the same, and in either instance, the device is of such size that it can be conveniently carried and manipulated to quickly sever a tube, particularly-of the character used in connection with water gages. The yoke 1 or the ring 14 constitutes a cutter supporting member into whichcan be inserted a tube or cylinder to be held in engagement with the cutters of the member by means carried by the member, the means in both instances being adjustable and in one instance yieldable, the latter being preferable when cutting gaged glasses.
The preferred embodiments of my invention have been illustrated, but it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A glass tube cutter comprising a member shaped to accommodate a tube, inwardly and outwardly projecting revoluble cutters carried by said member, a clamping member adjustable relativeto the first mentioned member and adapted to retain a glass tube in engagement with the inwardly projecting cutters of the first mentioned member, and means carried by said clamping member for yieldably holding'the same in engagement with a glass tube.
2. In a' glass tube cutter, a member, in-
wardly and outwardly projecting revoluble cutters carried thereby, and a clamping member movably supported by the first mentioned member and adapted to retain a glass tube in engagement with the inwardly projecting cutters.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
