(Cl. 12S-284) i This invention combines in an inseparable garment dress panties, waterproof panties, and a modied diaper, for babies in'the partly trained but undependable stage, providing neat appearance, comfort, warmth and protection for the baby, and protection, condence and ease of mind for those handling the baby.

The external appearance of these panties conforms to that of the regulation dress panties provided for children who have been, trained and adapted to their toilet requirements, and with no noticeable difference in bulkiness. The child is as easily and conveniently attended to as with regulation panties. Due to the specic construction and arrangement, moisture will not creep from the inner absorbent panties or modified diaper to the outer dress covering, thus assuring neatness and obviating any possibility of soiling the clothing of the person handling the baby.

The panties are substantially as easily and conveniently washed as regulation panties and require no ironing, and panties which have been soiled and removed from the baby can be rolled or bundled and packed away with the assurance that objects or clothing which they may contact will not be soiled.

It is known that baby panties have been made in which a combination of rubber panties and dress panties have been incorporated in a unitary structure and that regulation rubber panties are commercially available. However, with either type a diaper must be used. Thus with commercially available types only the diapers are changed, the same panties being replaced over `the substituted diaper.V Therefore to attend to is then applied and the same panties are applied v over the diaper, while with this invention there is only one garment to slip down, or remove and replace. The time saved with this invention in many cases is of vital importance due to the fact that babies lack control.

The objects and advantages oi' the invention are therefore as follows:

First; to provide in a single unit a combination of dress panties, moisture proof panties, and modined diaper or absorbent panties, to provide simultaneously a neat or dressy appearance and complete safety and protection for a baby and protection to those who handle the baby.

Second; to provide panties as outlined in which the leg-opening construction is such as to prevent creepage of moisture' from the modied diaper to the outer covering or dress panties so as to maintain a neat and clean appearance under all conditions.

Third; to provide panties as outlined in'which there is vno moisture-transferring connection between the inner absorbent panties and the outer dress panties. l

Fourth; to provide panties as outlined which may be removed and packed away with the assurance that moisture will not be transmitted to contacting articles or clothing.

Fifth; to provide panties as outlined which are easily and conveniently washed and dried and which`require no ironing.

'.Ihe invention consists of a combination of dress panties, waterproof panties, and absorbent panties, all undetachably secured into a unit. The dress panties may be formed of any suitable fabric, though jersey is preferred because it requires no ironing and is therefore ready for wear as soon as it is dry. The waterproof panties may be formed of any suitable material, such as rubber, rubberized fabric, oiledsilk, or any of the new exible plastic materials. The absorbent panties may be formed of any suitable absorbent and washable material, such as outing annel or diaper cloth,

All three panties are formed somewhat similar to the form illustrated in Fig. 1, with the excepltion that the waterproof panties are formed of a single sheet of material and are seamed only along the sides.

The outer or dress panties consist of -a back and a front body portion respectively I0 and II, and a crotch portion I2, the front and back portions being seamed to the crotch portion as indicated at I3, although the invention is not limited to this specific structure and may be modified.

The waterproof panties preferably consist of 4a single sheet of material I 4 which is folded at The absorbent panties are made similar to the outer panties with the exception that a multilayer crotch I1 is incorporated and consisting of a plurality of thicknesses of the absorbent material'as indicated at I8 and I9, and front and back body panels 20 and 2I which are also seamed along the sides at I6.

The waist may be provided with a waist band and buttons or fasteners but is preferably provided with a constricting band similar to that illustrated for the leg openings 22 and 23, the structure of which is clearly illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4.

Attached to the end 24 of the outer covering material or bottoms of the legs of the dress panties is a ribbon 25 of the waterproof material and which is of suitable width t form the garter tunnel 26 and leave a projecting free edge 21 of about A to 1/2 inch to function as a catch or stop for moisture.

The lower edges 28 of the leg openings of the waterproof panties extend to about the same level as does the lower edge of the outer covering but they are not attached. Similarly, the lower edge of the absorbent material extends to about the same level as the other materials although it may be shorter if desired.

The garter 29 is placed within the leg opening inside the absorbent material and the ribbon 25 is then folded about the lower edges of the several materials including the garter or elastic band 29, and the ribbon 25, absorbent material I8 and I9, or 20, the waterproof material, and the outer covering material are all sewed together at 30 in spaced relation above the lower edges of the materials. Thus the three panties are secured into an inseparable unit along the seams 30.

The tunnel 26 is formed to overlap as indicated at 3| and 32 and this overlapping portion is open so that the garter may be withdrawn suiliciently for adjustment and also to permit the garter to dry as also the enclosed absorbent material. Any

of the customary methods of adjustment may be provided for the garters and waist band.

Due to the fact that the lower edges of the waterproof material and absorbent material are free, drying can also occur about the lower edge of the waterproof material. If the materials were sewed together at their lower edges a seal would be formed and drying of the enclosed material would thus be prevented. It is due to this specific structure that drying is facilitated while preventing the creepage of moisture about the edge when the garment is being worn.

The flap 21 forms a stop for moisture while the seams 3l! form a fairly eiiicient seal, and the tendency of this trough-like stop or catch and seal is to stop the downward creep of moisture and cause its absorption by the absorptive material of the inner panties. Suitable ventilation is provided through the waterproof material, such as by the openings indicated at 33 which are formed through the waterproof material in accordance with requirements. i

From the foregoing it will be noted that the dress panties, the waterproof panties, and the modified diaper or absorbent panties, are a unitary, inseparable structure; that all moisture will be absorbed and retained by the inner panties and that the moisture or the absorbent material cannot contact the outer covering material due to the totally-intervening waterproof material and the waterproof flap or ribbon which extends about the edges of the several materials and has its connection to the outer covering material outside of the intervening waterproof material; that provision is made for adjusting the garters and belt elastic without any ripping'or breaking of stitches, and that the entire construction of the edges about the waist and leg openings is such as to prevent seepage to the outside as well as to facilitate drying of the enclosed material including the elastic; that the garter tunnels are formed of waterproof material and that ,a free edge is provided to lie against the leg of the baby to divert moisture to the absorbent material; that the invention is easily washed and dried; that there is no time lost in assisting the baby in its toilet requirements and that full protection is afforded those carrying or holding the baby, and that the panties may be packed away following removal Without any danger of transmitting moisture to other articles with which they may come in contact; thus providing a neat, dressy, safe and convenient protective garment for babies requiring no extra diapers or pads for babies who have been partly trained but who are not fully dependable in the expression of their requirements. The invention however may also be used for younger babies.

It will be understood that variations in construction, arrangement, patterns and materials, which variations are consistent with the appended claims may be resorted to Without detracting from the spirit or scope of the invention, or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.

II claim:

1. Baby panties comprising a unitary structure including outer dress panties and inner absorptive panties with intervening waterproof panties all connected into an inseparable unit, the crotch portion of the absorptive panties being formed with a plurality of layers of absorptive material, and in which a waterproof connection is provided between the outer and inner panties for isolating one relative to the other against moisture transfer.

2. Baby panties comprising a unitary structure including outer dress panties and inner absorptive panties with intervening waterproof panties all connected into an inseparable unit, the lower edges of the dress panties being connected to the absorptive panties through an encircling ribbon of waterproof material to prevent transfer of moisture from one to the other.

3, A baby garment comprising: dress panties, waterproof panties and absorptive panties, all of substantiallyl the same form and size with the waterproof panties .interposed between the outer dress panties and the inner absorbent panties', and with the three panties connected into an inseparable single garment; said panties having leg-openings; a ribbon of Waterproof material having one longitudinal edge attached to the lower edge of each opening in said dress panties and folded in and upwardly about the edges of the leg openings in the other panties and attached to the absorptive panties in spaced relation to the lower edge and forming a waterproof connection between the outer and inner nonwaterproof panties for isolating one from the other against transfer of moisture.

4. A baby garment comprising; dress panties,

waterproof panties and absorptive panties, all of' leg openings; a ribbon of waterproof material having one longitudinal edge attached to the lower edge of each opening in said dress panties and folded in and upwardly about the edges of the leg openings n the other panties and attached to the absorptive inner panties in spaced relation to the lower edge and forming a waterproofAconnection between the outer and inner non-waterproof panties for isolating one from the other against transfer of moisture, and coincidently forming a garter tunnel; and a garter within said tunnel, said tunnel being left open at the point of connection of the terminal ends of said ribbon to provide access to the garter for adjustment and to facilitate drying of materials enclosed within said tunnel.

5. A baby garment comprising; outer panties formed of dress material, inner panties formed of absorbent washable material, and interposed panties formed of waterproof material, with one tting within the other and being of approximately the same form and size and having leg openings and a waist opening and being connected into an inseparable unit; means for restricting the waist opening; a. ribbon having one longitudinal edge attached throughout its length to the lower edge of each leg opening in the outer v panties and encircling the opening, with the ribbon turned in and upwardly and sewed in spaced relation to the lower edge of the leg opening through all three panties and forming thereby a garter tunnel, a connection between the three panties, and a Waterproof connection between the outer and inner panties for isolating one from the other against transfer of moisture; a garter within each tunnel for restricting the leg opening; the terminal ends of said ribbon being free of each other to provide an opening for access to the garter for adjustment and to permit drying of material within the tunnel; the upper longitudinal edge of said ribbon above the seam being free and forming a stop to divert moisture to the inner absorptive material.
