UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN R. WILLIAMS, OF JOHNSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO OAMBRIA IRON COMPANY.
MACHINE FOR TRIMMING HOR'SESHOE-BLANKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,254, dated March 9, 1880.
Application filed December 19, 1879.
To all whom t may concern Beit known that I, JOHN R. WILLIAMS, of Johnstown, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Machines for Trimming Horseshoe-Blanks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to remove, by a simple and rapid process, the protuberances formed on the edge of a horseshoe-blank by the act of punching nail-creases therein.
In working steel blanks, especially, it is found impracticable to force the metal displaced in the creasing of the blank into the body thereof. I havefound itbest to provide pockets or recesses in the dies between which the blanks are clamped for creasing, so that the metal can escape in the form Vof protuberances on the edge ofthe blank, as I have described in another application for Letters Patent.
My present invention relates to a mode of removing these excresceu ces and itconsists in.
mounting the blank in a slide which carries it across or over the edge or edges of one or more saws, which remove the protruding metal and reduce it down to the proper surface of the blank. I prefer to employ four saws, one for each bulge or protuberance in the blank, and touse a slide with a pocket or seat in which the blank will lit, a separate pocketed slide being used for each form or size of blank.
In order that my invention may be fully nnderstood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan of the machine. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view thereof.V
A is a shaft or arbor, driven by a pulley, B, and carrying four circular saws, C G C C. On
the same frame or bed Din which the sawshai't has its bearings is fixed adjustably a guide-block, E, supporting and guiding a slide, F, which has a dovetailed connection therewith, as shown at e, to confine the slide to a horizontal motion in a line precisely parallel with the axis of the saws. In the upper edge of the slide Fis a pocket or seat, f, of proper size and shape to receive and lirmly hold the blank, which is shown at G.
f represents a notch in the slide to admit the lower bit of the tongs by which the blank is placed in the machine. Set-screws H are employed to adjust the guide-block E and slide F relatively to the edges of the saws. The slide is moved to and fro by a lever, I, projecting horizontally from a shaft, J, journaled in the bed D, from the inner end of which shaft rises a vertical arm, K, engaging with a stud on the slide.
In operation the slide F is moved sufficiently to one side to permit the blank Gr to be inserted with the protuberances g g g g (which are opposite the nail-creases g g g' g) between the saws C O O C. The slide being then moved horizontally as far as the length of one protuberance, all four of them will be removed by the saws. y
When any number of blanks of one size or pattern have thus been trimmed the slide F is removed and a new one, to suit another size of blank, is placed in position. y
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. In combination with a series of saws for trimming horseshoe-blanks, the slide F., having on its upper edge alongitudinal pocket, f, to receive the blank, and a transverse notch, j", to admit the tongs which hold said blank, substantially as explained.
2. The machine herein described for trimming horseshoe-blanks, consisting of a series of saws, O C C O, on a mandrel, A, mounted on a frame, D E, and a slide, F, guided on said frame, and adapted to carry a horseshoeblank across the edges of the said saws, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
JOHN E. WILLIAMS.
