JOHN GEHR, OF CLEAR SPRING, ASSIGNOR TO PETER J. SOWERS AND ODIS T. B. WOLFORD, OF WASHINGTON COUNTY, MD., ONE-THIRD TO EACH.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 225,007, dated March 2, 1880.
Application led December 8, 1879.
' To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN GEHR, of Clear Spring, in the county of Washington and State of Maryland, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Churns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this speci- Io eation, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure i of the drawings is a vertical longitudinal-section of my invention. Fig.`2.is `a side view of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are side views of the dashers. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views, and Fig. 7 is a sectional view through the line .fr x.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in ehurns; and it consists 2o more particularly in the arrangement and con- 3o tures a a, which are adapted yto receive the flanged spools b b. These spools b b form bearings for the shafts of thelarger dasher B.
C is an internally-toothed wheel, which is ri gidly secured to a short hollow shaft, c. To
3 5l this shaft the arms c of the dasher B are attached, and the armsuc, on the opposite side,
are attached to the shaft d. To this shaft is* secured the operating-handle D.
The shaft d is recessed at d', and forms a 4o bearing for one end of the shaftE of smaller dasher E. The other end of the shaft E passes through the shaft c, and has attached to its end a cog-wheel, F. This cog-wheel meshes into a similar one, G, which imparts motion from the internally-toothed wheel C, as shown in Fig. 2 of the annexed drawings.
G is a cog-wheel, which is attached by a boltand nut to the arm H, which is provided with an elbow. This arm is pivoted at h to the upper part of the churn-box in such a manner ,5o as toallow the cog-wheel to be easily removed from the wheels C F when desired.
When desirable to inspect the contents of the churn one end of the upper part of the box may be raised, and the dashers and gearing will still remain in position. The pivoted arm H, which carries the cog-wheel G, adapts itself to such use. Also, when desirable, the
-cog-wheel G can be removed from position,
and will restidle at the side of the churn-box, 6o and the large dasher B can be rotated, while the smaller one will` remain stationary. 4
The operation of my invention is as follows: When the gearing is in proper position, as
shown, the crank D being turned causes the dasher B and wheel C to revolve. This motion is transmitted, by means of the cog-wheel G, to the cog-wheel F, which rotates in an opposite direction from thewheel C, and thus the dashers are caused to rotate in opposite 7o directions.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with two dashers which rotate in opposite directions, the internally-toothed wheel C, cog-wheels F G, and pivoted arm H, arranged and adapted to operate substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
