Description

R. GUYER CARTON July 15, 1941.
Filed Sept. 12, 19 38 Patented July '15, 1941 CARTON Reynolds Guyer, St. Paul, Minn., assignor to Waldorf Paper Products Company, St. Paul, -Minn., a corporation of Minnesota Application September 12, 1938, Serial No. 229,402 (Cl. 229-51) Claims.
My invention relates to cartons and particularly to reclosing cartons of the type in which an end wall of the same is constructed by means of end wall sections issuing from the lateral walls and secured together in overlying position.
An object of the invention resides in constructing the carton in a manner to form a closure adapted to be readily opened and reclosed.
Another object of the invention resides in providing a construction in which the closure isdetachably secured to one or more of the lateral walls of the carton and inwhich detachment of the closure from the lateral walls is readily procured.
Another object of the invention resides in constructing one of the lateral walls with a line of weakening defining a tab at the upper portion of the same connected with the end wall section issuing therefrom and adapted to be removed from said lateral wall to leave a fingeropening in said lateral wall.
A still further object of the invention resides in constructingthe carton with a flap issuing from the end wall section of the opposite wall and adapted to be disposed beneath said tab.
Another object of the invention resides in constructing the flap with a line of weakening defining a tab adapted to register with the tab in.
. the upper edge of the lateral wallsfrom which they issue when'the said sectionsare severed along said lines of weakening whereby buckling of the carton is prevented after the same has been opened and-efiective reclosing of the carton procured. I
Other objects of the invention reside in the novel combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter illus-' trated and/or described.
In the drawing;
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a carton illustrating an embodiment of my invention and showing. the carton prior to detachment of the closure.
Fig. 2 is a developed view of the blank from which the carton shown in Fig. 1 is constructed.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the upper end of the carton shown in Fig. 1 with the end sections arranged prior to attachment, said view being drawn to a larger scale.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view similar to Fig. 3 showing some of the sections secured together and viewed from the opposite side of, the carton.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 55 of Fig. 1.
In reclosing cartons where the closure or end wall is attached to the body of the carton proper and forms a part thereof and is severed through lines of weakening, considerable inconvenience is encountered in being unable to readily sever the portions from one another to free the closure. The present invention provides a construction whereby this disadvantage is eliminated and by means of which the user. may. by simple manipulation, free the closure for immediate use.
In the drawing I have illustrated a carton it which is constructed from a blank of cardboard or some other similar materiaLfWhich blank which constitute the lateral walls or the carton. The marginal portions of the blank ll, outwardly of the scores I3 and I4, are slit along lines 25 and 26 which divide the portions of the carton outwardly of said scores into upper end wall sections 21, 28, 29 and It and lower end wall sections .32, 33 and 34. In addition, a flap 36 is formed on the side wall section 23 which is attached to the rear wall 22 iorming a tubular structure adapted to be collapsed or extended. The end wall section 2| is of a-width equal to or less than the depth of the carton from back to front, while the sections 2la'nd' 29 are of a width less than the width of the carton. Section 1 30 is, however, of a depth greater than the depth of the carton and is formed with a score it parallel to the score II which forms a flap, 21" at the marginal portion of the section 30. The score 36 is disposed a. distance from the score it equal to the depth of the carton so that the flap '31 is disposed in the plane of theiront wall 2| when the sections are arranged to form a closure for the carton.
The front wall 23 of the'carton-lsconstructed' with two lines of weakening 33 and 39 which extend along the score |3 toward each other from the scores It and I1 and which fall short of one another at their innerv ends. Between the inner ends of these lines of weakening is formed a crescent shapedv line of weakening 4| which is disposed in the front wall 2| and whichforms a tab 42 hingedly connected at 43 to the' end wall section 28 through the score i3. In addition the two end wall sections 21 and 29 are formed with lines of weakening 44 which provide flanges '45 at the upper marginal portions of the side walls 23 and 24 which are hingedly connected to said side walls through the score l3. The flap 31, similar to the lateral wall 2|, is formed with a crescent shaped line of weakening terminating at the score line 36. This line of weakening defines a tab 49 hingedly connected at Wall 30. The tab 49 is of the same, form and dimensions as the tab 42 and isso situated that the same underlies the tab 42 and registers therewith when the end wall sections of the carton are assembled.
In the construction of the cartons the flap 35 41 through the score '36 to the lateral along the score l3 as a hinge. The entire top of the carton is now open with the exception of the space occup1ed by the flanges 45 and access to the interior of the carton may be had. When it becomes desirable to reciose the carton, the fiap 31 is-held at right angle to the section and inserted within the upper portion of the front wall 2|. The arrangement of parts, after this has been performed is the same as when the carton is first assembled and is shown in Fig. 1. In so inserting the flap 31 the same is forced in between the ends of the flanges 45 and the front wall 2|, said fianges urging the said flap into engagement with the front wall 2|, thereby holding the closure in closed position. When it becomes desirable to re-open the carton, the closure 49 may be engaged by inserting the thumb through the open-' ing 55 formed by removing the tab 42, whereupon the flap 31 may be engaged and the closure again disengaged from the carton and swungbackwardly upon the score I3v as a hinge. The advantages of my invention are manifest.
' Cartons constructed in accordance with my inis glued to the wall 22 at the factory to provide a tubular wall structure which comes collapsed.
.When the carton is to be erected at the locality of use, glue is applied to the inner surface of the end wall section 30 and the inner surface of the end wall section 28, or instead of the inner surface -of the end wall section 30 to'the outer surfaces of the end wall sections 21 and 29. In either event glue is omitted from the flap 31. The two end wall sections 21 and 29 are first folded inwardly and the end wall section 30 next folded upon the first named end wall sections and the flap 31 tucked in between the sections 21 and 29 and the lateral wall 2|. This causes the tab 49 to underlie the tab 42 andto register therewith. Thereafter the end wall section 28 is folded upon the section 30 and the parts then pressed together.-
In the coating of the various surfaces, it is preferable that the flanges or the opposite portions of the end wall section 30 be not coated with glue. The glued end wall sections 21, 28, 2'9 and 30 within the limits defined by the lines of weakening 39, 39, 4| and 44 and the score |3 define a closure for the carton which I have referred to by' the reference numeral 40. After the upper end of the carton has been glued, the carton is filled and the lower end closed by gluing and folding over the end wall sections 3|, 32, 33 and 34 in the customary manner. Thereafter a wrapper which has not been shown -in the drawing may be placed about'the entire carton. The carton is now ready to be distributed for use.
In the use of my invention, the entire wrapper or the upper end thereof is first removed from the carton. Pressure i next applied by the thumb to the tab 42 which, due to the lines of weakening 4| and 45 causes both tabs 42 and 48 to be severed from'the structures to which they are attached and to be forcedinto theinterior of the carton This leavesan.
as shown in full lines in Fig. 5. opening 50 in the front wall 2|. Once these tabs have been freed the same may be pressed upwardly against the-closure 40 whereupon it be- -comes a relatively simple matter to apply outward pressure to the closure 40. This causes the end -wall section 28 to become severed from the front wall 2| along the lines of weakening 38 and 39. Further pressure causes the closure 49 to become severed'along the lines of weakening 44 whereupon the entirecl'osure may be swung rearwardly vention completely enclose the contents thereof and have identically the same form and appearitself so that the user may avail himself of the advantages of the inventionwithout the necessity-- of elaborate instructions.
