Description

July 8, 1941. v. M. OPPER 2,248,916
SHELF, HOLDER, AND THE LIKE Filed Dot. 31, 1959 INVENTOR. V/c-rorz OFFER.
ATTORNEY.
Patented July 8, 1941 7 umrsn STATES PATENT o Fica snsm nomnn. sun rm: mxs Victor M. Opper, New York, N. Y. Application mm- :1, 1939, Serial No. 302.213 1 Claim. (01. 211-60) This invention relates generally to improvements in devices for supporting articles and more particularly to an auxiliary or depending shelf from which may be suspended, certain toilet articles and the like.
It is an object of the present invention to provide in combination with a cabinet shelf, an auxiliary or depending shelf supported by the cable net shelf and having means whereby tubular containers holding toilet articles, medicaments and the like may be suspended therefrom. In toiletcabinets of the present type no provision is made for the convenient and orderly arranging of such articles and others such as razors and other implements, with the result that these articles often" be held securely in suspended position.
It is afurther object of the present invention to provide the rear portion of the slots with converging walls to facilitate wedging of the articles thus suspended.
These and other objects of the invention and the means for their attainment will be more apparent from the following detailed description, taken in connection with the .,accompanying drawing, illustrating certain embodiments of which the invention may be realized, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a toilet wallcabinet having incorporated therein features of the invention;
Hg. 2 is a sectional view taken. along line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the ar rows.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of an auxiliary or de= pending shelf or support embodying the invention;
Fig. 4 is a front elevational view of the auxiliary shelf shown in Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken along line 5-5 of Fig. 4, looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 6 is a view of part of the device illustrated in Figs. 1-5, showing an alternative means of attaching the device to a toilet cabinet.
Fig. 8 shows an auxiliary or depending wire structure embodying the invention in a modified form.
Referring to the drawing Figs. 1 and 2 show the invention applied to a wall-cabinet Ill, the latter being set into a recess in the'wall I I. Cabinet I. may have the conventional shelves l2 maintained in spaced relation by means of the page or pins I: inserted in the holes ll of the side walls I! of the cabinet. The cabinet may be provided with a swinging door It.
Referring now to the auxiliary or depending or supplementary shelf indicated generally by the numeral I I, the same may comprise a strip of metal of the non-corrosive type or made non-corrosive by applying thereto a suitable coating. bent or shaped to form a horizontal upper ledge II, a verticalrear wall 19 and a longitudinal lower member 20. The parts l8 and I8 are at a right angle to each other, whereas, the member or part 20 is preferably slanted upward from vertical wall is at approximately fifteen degrees with respect to an imaginary horizontal line.
iliary shelf from the cabinet shelf; and
Member 20 is provided with a plurality of slots or cut-outs 2|, 2: adapted to receive the header top portions of articles to be suspended from the device II. The walls of the slots are preferably made straight or parallel in front and tapering or converging in the rear as indicated by the numerals 23, 24, respectively. Since the member 20 is tipped at an angle with its outermost edge upward when the necks of articles such as the tubes 25, 26 (Fig. 1) are inserted in the cut-outs or slots 2!, the same vwill slide towards the rear of the device and become wedged between the tapered walls 2%, and thereby will be securely maintained in position.
These supporting slots are preferably made in difierent widths, such as, illustrated at 25 and 22 to accommodate various sized necks of articles to be suspended. The slots may be variously spaced from each other to allow for the differences in widths and thicknesses of the articles Fig. 6. shows the left hand portion of the supplementary shelf I! having a notch 32 in engagement with a screw or bolt 33 secured in a wall 3d. The right hand portion is provided with a similar notch (not shown).
Fig. 7 'a' view-ofa device incorporating the invention. in a modified form andin which the left hand portion of the supplementary or auxillary shelf is shown.
As illustrated, the. device comprises the inclined supporting shel 20', the rear vertical wall I 9' from which exten at each end a clamping member 35 having its lower connecting member 36 projecting from the rear wall I! at 31 and forming a U-bendil in front of shelf l2 and running rearwardlythereby providing a clamping Shelf ,l2 may be suspended within finger 39. the wall-cabinet or by conventional brackets secured to a wall of a room.
The device I! may be employed as a separate shelf by attaching the same to a wall or other support. r
Fig. 8 shows the invention in a form similar to that shown in Fig. 7, except that the device is formed and bent out of wire, thus providing the slots 45, upright end members 46 and clamping fingers 41.
It is understood that the shelf I! may be made of am; suitable material such as metal, or plastic composition, and that the same may be made entirely of wire or a combination of such materials.
Although the drawing and the above specification discloses the best modes in which I have contemplated embodying my invention, I desire in no way to be limited to the details of such dis-' closure, for in the further practical application of my invention many changes in the forms and proportions may be made as circumstances require or experience suggests without departing from the spirit ofthe invention within the scope I of the appended claim. c
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desireto secureby LettersPatent is:
In combination with a cablnet having a rear wall and a horizontal shelf, of a supplementaryshelf being U -shaped in cross-section, one leg of the U resting on the upper-surface of said cabinet shelf, the base of. the U extending downwardly between the rear edge of said cabinet shelf and said cabinet rear wall, and the other leg of the U extending outwardly from the said base and spaced by said .baseappreciably from the underside of said cabinet shelf, said other leg having a plurality of slots for receiving the neck portions of tubular containers, said slots extend-
