Description
June 24,1941. 5.3m. FARKAS SPIRAL BINDER Filed'April 6, 1940 ATTORNEY Patented June 24, 1941 SPIRAL BINDER Emil N. Farkas, Chicago, Ill., assignor of one-half to Frank F. Farkas, Chicago, 111.
Application April 6, 1940, Serial No. 328,182
5 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in spiral binders.
The object of the invention is to bind a marginally perforated book with a spiral binder so that it will open with the leaves in perfect registry with one-another.
This I accomplish by threading through the perforations two coils, one having a left-hand and the other a right-hand thread. The intersecting loops in each perforation will act as cams engaging both the upper and the lower edges of the perforation, whereby the displacement of one page with respect to another is prevented.
Preferably, though not necessarily, each spiral is made of a thin flat ribbon of plastic and highly resilient material such as disclosed in Patent No. 2,188,680 to Frank F. Farkas. Aside from its other advantages, two such coils can be readily threaded through oblong perforations in the leaves.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the drawing in which Fig. 1 is a top plan view;
Fig. 2 a section along lines 22 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 a side elevation.
I designates leaves of a book, 2 oblong marginal perforations in the leaves and 3 and 4 two flat plastic coils threaded through and intersecting in the perforations in a left-hand and right-hand direction, respectively.
When the book is opened, spiral 3 engages the upper edges of the perforations in the right-hand leaves and the lower edges of the perforations in the left-hand leaves. The spiral 4 engages the opposite edges of the perforations and thus prevents the relative displacement of the leaves when the book is opened.
What is claimed is:
1. As a new article of manufacture a spiral binder for marginally perforated book leaves consisting, for each book, of two helical coils, one coiled with a left-hand and the other with a righthand thread, and both coils passing through the perforations.
2. As a new article of manufacture a binder for marginally perforated book leaves consisting, for each book, of two helical coils formed of flat strips of plastic material, one having a left-hand and the other a right-hand thread, and both coils passing through the perforations.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a book having leaves with marginal perforations, and two helical coils threaded through said perforations, the loops of the coils crossing one another so that when the book is opened one loop bears against a lower point of a perforation in the left-hand and an upper point of a perforation in the righthand leaf, and the intersecting loop against opposite points of the two last mentioned perforations.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a book having leaves with marginal perforations, and two helical coils, one coiled with a left-hand and the other with a right-hand thread, threaded through said perforations, the loops of the coils crossing one another so that when the book is opened one loop bears against a lower point of a perforation in the left-hand and a diametrically opposed upper point of a perforation in the right-hand leaf,
and the intersecting loop against diametrically opposed points of the two last mentioned perforations.
5. As a new article of manufacture, a book having leaves with oblong marginal perforations, and two helical coils formed of flat strips of plastic material, one coiled with a left-hand and the other with a right-hand thread, threaded through said perforations, the loops of the coils crossing one another so that when the book is opened one loop bears against the lower edge of a perforation in the left-hand and the upper edge of a perforation in the right-hand leaf, and the intersecting loop against the opposite edges of the two last mentioned perforations.
